DAVID M. CAIN AND NEIL F. ROCKEY, 0F ELIDA, TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed .Tune 17, 1911.
Patented Dec. 26, 1911.
Serial No. 633,854.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID M. CAIN and NEIL F. RocKnY, citizens of the United States, residing at Elida, .in the county of Roosevelt and Territory of New Mexico, have invented a new and useful Mail and Coin Holder for Rural Carriers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new anduseful combined coin and mail holder, adapted mainly for use on rural mail delivery routes.
The main object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature so constructed and operated, that the mail and the coin may be simultaneously released.
A further object of this invention is to improve generally and render more eflicient this class of devices.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a View in perspective, showing a combined coin and mail holder constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the jaws of the mail holder or clamp and the coin holder in open positions. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring more especially to the drawings 1 designates the base clamping jaw, which may or may not be fastened to a rural mail post, while 2 designates the movable clamping jaw, between which and the clamping jaw 1 the mail may be clamped, there being a leaf spring 3 secured between the jaws 1 and 2, for holding them together.
Projecting outwardly of the jaw 2 are two parallel flanges 4: between which, a clamping jaw 5 is movable, there being a leaf spring 6 cooperating between the jaw 5 and the jaw 2. The jaw .5 is provided with an inturned end, which forms a flange 7, which contacts with the clamping jaw 2. This flange 7 constitutes means to support the coin, which may be passed through the opening 8 of the clamping jaw 5. The clamping jaw combined with the flanges 4 forms a box like structure to receive the coin. The lower portions of the flanges 4 flare outwardly as shown at 9, which constitute guides for the coin, when released.
By applying pressure upon the finger pieces 10 and 11 of the jaws 2 and 5, sufficiently to open the jaws, the mail and the coin may be simultaneously released.
This combined holder for mail and coin, when secured to a post may be provided with a suitable housing, as shown at 12, in order to protect the mail from the weather.
This combined coin and mail holder may the secured on the interior of a rural mail The coin and mail holder may be suspended within the housing 12, upon a hook (not shown), in order to further protect the mail from'rain and snow.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is In combination, a pair of spring tension main clamping jaws, one of said jaws having outwardly extending parallel flanges, provided with lower'outwardly flaring end portions, a supplemental jaw having a leaf spring between it and one of the main jaws and provided with a lower flange extending toward and engaging one of the main clamping jaws, said supplemental clamping jaw, its lower end flange, and the flanges of one of the main jaws constituting a box like structure for holding coin, the main jaws and the supplemental jaw being designed to be actuated at the same time to simultaneously release the coin and the mail.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID M. CAIN. NEIL F. ROCKEY. Witnesses:
