LAUNDRY-DRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIAN I-I. RIVERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Laundry-Drier, of which the following is a specification. o
This invention relates to laundry driers, and its object is to produce .an apparatus whereby steam or hot air may be forced to circulate and pass through the articles to be dried to perform drying functions.
The apparatus the subject matter of this invention may also be applied to other uses than a drier in laundries, and mention may be madeat this point that I do not restrict myself to specific use, but desire to claim the invention for all purposes.
In the embodiment shown in the" accom panying drawings Figure 1 is an elevation, partially in section, showing the arrangement of a. preferred construction. Fig. 2 is an elevation, showing the arrangement of the door whereby access may be had for in* sertion, and removal of the articles.
The tank 1 may be of any suitable dimensions and shape, and constructed of any available material, but is preferably of metal, and is supported by posts or standards 2. A cover 3 hermetically seals the upper end of the tank. A rod or shaft 4, extending across the top, is connected at its ends with vertical links 5, the lower ends of which are connected with the sides of a hopper bottom 6. The shaft 4 is arranged so that when rotated it will raise and lower the links 5 and thereby the bottom. This operation may beeifected by the use of cams 7 attached to said shaft 4, or by arranging the shaft in the form of an eccentrically pivoted roller which, when rotated, would produce the same effect.l If desired guides 8 may be utilized t-o prevent lateral displacement of the' shaft.
At one side of the tank, by hermetic hinge construction 9, a door 10 is mounted through which access may be had to the interior of the tank. The bottom 6 is constructed so that its upper edge will embrace the bottom of the tank and the lower edge of the door 10 when in closed adjustment, thereby to hold the parts in proper relation and hermetically close the lower end of the tank. A tray 11, composed of side walls and. a reticulated bottom, is removably supported upon brackets 12, in the lower end of the the water and tank and is of such size that it may be passed through the door 10 for removal and insertion. This tray is intended to contain the articles to be dried or subjected to treatment, and the Areticulated bottom permits the water and moisture to be forced therethrough into the hopper bottom 6, whence 1t may be removed or drawn off through-the valve controlled ipe 13.
A steam or air inlet pipe 14 enters the tank 1 near its upper end, and slightly below the plane of the lower edge of the deflector plate 15 attached to the top. Avalve 16 controls the passage of the steam or air through said pipe. A separate valve controlled pipe 17 opens into the tank below the pipe 14.
In operation as a laundry appliance the tray 11 containing the articles to be treated is passed through the door 10 and onto the supports 12. The door is then closed, and the shaft 4 is rotated to raise the bottom 6 to embrace the lower end of the tank and hermetically close the same. The steam or air (or other agent), is then admitted, under pressure, through the pipe 14 and is forced through the articles in the tray, and outwardly through the -pipe 13 driving out moisture. The moisture drops into the bottom 6 and will be removed through the outlet pipe 13 when the valve in said pipe is opened to permit free escape ofthe air or steam from the tank. Water may be admitted in advance of the air or steam through the pipe 17 and withdrawn through the pipe 13 in advance of the steam Y or air. The deflector 15 acts as a conveyer along oblique surfaces of which the accumulating drops of moisture will iow to the outer edge of said shield; thence the moisture drops outside the tray 11, and falls into the bottom 6 without passing through the contents of the tray.
It is obvious that the invention may be applied to different uses, and that there may be variations from the structure described without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention. I do not restrict myself to specific features, but Y What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A drier comprising a drying chamber, a water inlet passage, a separate valve controlled steam inlet opening into said chamber, an outlet passage, a tray between said outlet passage and said inlet passages, and a deflector device in said chamber, substantially as specified.
2. A drier comprising a drying chamber, an inlet passage, an outlet passage, a valve controlling said outlet passage, a tray having a perforated bottom between said passages, and a deflector above said tray having its edges extending beyond the sides of said tray whereby moisture from said defiector will be delivered outside of said tray, substantially as specified.
3. A drier comprising a drying chamber, a water inlet to said chamber, a separate steam inlet to said chamber, a valve controlling said steam inlet, a tray below said inlets, a movable bottom below said tray, and an outlet passage from said movable bottom, substantially as specified.
t. A drier comprising a drying chamber, a movable bottom for said chamber, a door for said chamber, and means for holding said bottom in engagement with said door effectivelyto lock said door in closed position, substantially as specified.
5. A drier comprising a drying chamber, a door, a bottom looking said door in closed position, an outlet from said bottom, means for moving said bottom to unlock said door, and a tray in said chamber removable through said door, substantially as specified.
6. A drier comprising a chamber, a door to said chamber, a bottom locking said door in closed posit-ion, links supporting said bottom, a shaft operable to move said links effectively to raise and lower said bottom to release said door, guides holding said shaft from displacement, and a tray in said chamber removable through said door, substantially as specified.
7. A drier comprising a drying chamber, a door, a bottom locking said door in closed position, an outlet from said bottom, and means for moving said bottom to unlock said door, substantially as specified.
8. A drier comprising a drying chamber, a door to said chamber, a bottom looking said door in closed position, links supporting said bottom and means for operating said links to move said bottom, substantially as specified.
9. A drier comprising a drying chamber, a tray in said chamber, a door to said chamber, a bottom locking said door, links supporting said bottom, a shaft supporting said links, and cams on said shaft whereby said links and said bottom will be raised and lowered when said shaft is rotated, substantially as specified.
