GAS-CONTROLLING DEVICE FOR BURNERS.
vice designed more especially for invertedmantle gas burners, whereby the flow ofgas can be accurately regulated.
The principal object of the invention is,
the provision of a novel valve-operating means of comparatively simple and inexpensive construction, reliable and efficient in use, and adapted preferably, although not necessarily, for inverted gas mantle lamps.
Another object of the invention is to provide simple and effective means for preventing leakage of gas around the rotary shaft which is employed for adjusting the position of the needle valve, thereby overcoming one of the serious objections of gas controlling valves used in connection with inverted mantle lamps, wherein the intense heat to which the device is subjected renders the same leaky.
With these objects in view and others, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of part-s which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.

The frame 8 has a longitudinal opening 10, and
along one wall of the opening are rack teeth 11. Meshing with these rack teeth is a pinion 12 on the inner end of the shaft 7. By this means, the rotation of the shaft will raise or lower the'valve and hence regulate the supply of gas.
It is extremely important that leakage of gas around the shaft 7 be prevented, since any leakage impairs the eiiiciency of the burner. For this purpose, the tubular member 6 has its inner end counterbored to form a chamber 13 for receiving a packing-14: of asbestos or the like which resists the extreme heat'to which the parts are subjected. The shaft has a collar 15 against which the packing bears, and threaded in the chamber 13 is a gland 16 for compressing the packlar 15. As shown in Fig. 4, the inner end ofthe member 6 is internally and externally threaded for receiving the gland and for screwing into the body A. The inner end ofthechamber 13 forms a shoulder against which the collar 15 bears, and this collar cooperates with the handle 17 on the outer end of the shaft 7 for rotatably holding the shaft in the tubular member. The valve is maintained in cooperative relation with its seat by reason of the teeth 11 meshing with the teeth of the pinion 12, and furthermore, the valve cannot-turn in the body A because of the intermeshing relation of the teeth. The valve body does not require guides since it will move back and forth with perfect freedom, and owing to the absence of guides, the flow of gas through the body A is not restricted or the pressure reduced, as is the case with those devices in which guides for the valve are necessary. With this arrangement, the position of the valve can be accurately adjusted for controlling the flow of the gas to the burner tube, and at all times leakage and waste of gas from the body is prevented.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invent-ion appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I 'now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. In a gas controlling device for burners, a valve casing having a longitudinal bore of even diameter and at one end formed with a terminal wall having a small central gas orifice, a tubular member entering the casing at one side thereof in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the casing, a valve member within the casing comprising a frame having internal gear teeth thereon and a Valve adapted to move into and out of closing relation to the gas orifice at the end of the bore of the casing, an actuating member for the valve comprising a shaft extending through the tubular member and having a pinion within the casing adapted to engage the gear teeth on the valve frame, and a packing gland for the shaft entering the tubular member at the end within the valve casing and adapted to confine packing within said tubular memher, the packing gland and tubular member constituting the sole support for the shaft.
2. In a fluid controlling device, a suitable casing, a valve therein, and a valve operating device comprising a tubular member having one end entering the casing, a shaft mounted in said tubular member and provided exterior to the casing with manipulating means and interior to the casing with valve operating means, said shaft having a collar thereon within the tubular member, said tubular member being interiorly enlarged for the reception of the collar and threaded at the end within the casing, and a packing gland traversed by the shaft and entering the threaded end of the tubular member within the casing, the said packing gland being adapted to confine packing about the shaft against the collar on said shaft.
3. A fluid controlling device, comprising a suitable casing, a valve comprising a closed frame having gear teeth along the inner wall of one side of the frame, the said frame being adapted to slide in the casing, and manipulating means for the valve comprising a shaft, a manipulating member secured to one end of the shaft, an elongated pinion at the other end of the shaft and adapted to engage the gear teeth on the valve frame, a tubular member carrying the shaft and entering the casing, and a packing gland surrounding the shaft within the casing and adapted to enter the end of the tubular member within the casing to confine packing about the shaft, the said shaft having a collar thereon within the tubular member against which collar packing confined by the gland engages.
