To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES L. RUnHs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ice-Picks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to ice picks and has for its object to provide improved means whereby the point of the pick may be inclosed within the handle when not in use, but which may be readily extended into operative position.

Another object is to simplify the construction of ice picks of this class and to otherwise improve thereon and to such ends this invention consists in the several novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts set forth in the following specification and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the drawings furnished herewith in which- Figure 1 is a side view of an ice pick containing my improvements, Fig. 2 is a central, longitudinal section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig.3 is a side View of a fragment of the pointed stem, F ig..4 is a side view partly broken away, of a lining for a socket in the handle, Fig. 5 is a side view of a collar which forms part of the device, Fig. 6 is a side view of a ferrule and Fig. 7 is an end view of the complete ice pick.

Referring to the drawings, the handle will be seen at 10, which in its preferred form, comprises a wooden handle having a reduced neck 11, at one end, a longitudinally eXtending bore or socket 12, opening out through the end of said neck and a longitudinally extending slot 13, which opens out from the socket 12. A metal lining, preferably in the form of a tube 14, is seated in the socket 12, and has a longitudinally extending slot 15, in its wall which registers with the slot 13, in the wooden handle.

Slidably held in the tube 14, is a stem 16, which is sharpened at one end'to provide a point 17, and said stem has a head 18, preferably in the form of a sleeve, secured upon its other end by means of a screw threaded,

stud or pin 19, which is threaded in the sleeve 18, and seats in a recess 21, in the stem 16. Said screw threaded stud or pin 19, projects out through the registering slots in the tube 14, and handle 10, and preferably has a knob 22, upon its projecting end which may be taken hold of to slide the pointed stem in the tube 14, whereby the stem may be slid into the tube 14, to completely inclose it, or the major portion thereof may be slid out through the open end to bring it into operative position. The pointed stem is secured in its extended position by mechanism which will now be described. Surrounding the neck 11, of the wooden handle is a ferrule 23, which is secured in place as for instance by driving it upon the neck 11, and if desired it may be further held in place by means of a screw'threaded pin 24. A rotatable collar 25, surrounds the ferrule 23, at its base, and is confined between the pin 24, and an annular shoulder 26, on the handle. The ferrule has a notch 27 in its wall, which notch is arranged to register with the upper end of the slots 13, 15, in the handle and tube, respectively, to allow the pin or stud 19, to be moved into its uppermost position. The collar 25, has a bayonet slot 28, in its side wall; which slot is preferably made in the form of a T. The longitudinal portion 29, of the slot may be brought into register with the notch 27 and upper end of the slots 13, 15, while the ends 30, of the transverse portion extend away from each side of the slot 29. It is evident that the stud 19, may be moved into the with the pin 24, whereby the collar may be held in operative position by the friction be tween itself and the shoulder 26, and pin 24. To inclose the pointed stem, the collar is turned back until the portion 29, of the bayonet slot is opposite the pin or stud 19, which may then be slid out of the bayonet notch, and thereupon moved to the other end of the handle where it engages with the sides of the slots 13, 15, which at this point converge toward each other somewhat, to cause sufficient friction on the stud 19, to hold the .stem in retracted position.

1. An ice pick comprising in combination,

a hollow handle having a longitudinally extending slot, a pointed stem sliding in the hollow of said handle and arranged to be extended beyond the handle and retracted wholly within the same and locking means for securing said pointed stem in its extended position, comprising a stud projecting from the stem and a collar rotatively mounted at a fixed position upon the handle and having a stud engaging portion for operatively holding said stem in fixed position upon the handle.

2. An ice pick comprising in combination, a hollow, longitudinally slotted handle, the slot extending in a straight line throughout its entirety, a pointed stem sliding in the hollow of said handle, a projection secured to said pointed stem and extending out through the slot in the hollow handle and a collar having a bayonet slot into and out of which said stud may be moved, said collar being rotatively mounted upon the handle and adapted to engage with said projection to hold the pointed stem in extended position.

3. An ice pick comprising in combination, a hollow handle having a longitudinally extending slot, a metal lining for the hollow of said handle and having a longitudinally extending slot registering with the slot in the handle, a pointed stem slidingly held in said metal lining, a stud projecting out from said pointed stem and sliding in the slots of the handle and metal lining, and a collar rotatively secured at a fixed point upon said handle and having a bayonet slot into which said stud may be slid into operative connection with the collar.

4:. An ice pick comprising in combination, a hollow handle having a longitudinally extending slot and a reduced neck at one end, a pointed stem sliding in the hollow of said handle, a stud projecting out from said stem and sliding in the slot in the handle, a projection extending out from the neck of the handle and a collar having a bayonet slot into which said stud may be slid into operative connection with the collar, said collar being rotatively secured at a fixed point between said projection and a shouldered portion on the handle and arranged to engage[ with said stud to prevent endwise movement of the pointed stem when in its extended position.

5. An ice pick comprising in combination, a hollow handle having a longitudinally extending slot, a metal lining in the hollow of said handle and having a longitudinally extending slot registering with the slot in the handle, a pointed stem sliding in said lining and having a head at one end substantially fitting the bore of the metal lining, a stud projecting out from said head and sliding in the slots in the handle and lining, a pin projecting from the handle and a collar having a bayonet slot into which said stud may be slid into operative connection with the collar, said collar being rotatively secured at a fixed point between said pin and a shoulder on the handle and arranged to prevent endwise movement of the pointed stem when the latter is in its extended position.

6. An ice pick comprising in combination, a hollow handle having a longitudinally extending slot and a reduced neck, a pointed stem sliding in the hollow of said handle and having a head upon one end substantially fitting the bore in the handle, a stud projecting out from said head and sliding in the slot in said handle, a ferrule secured on the neck, a pin extending out from said ferrule and a collar rotatively secured at a fixed point between the pin and a shouldered portion of the handle and having a bayonet slot into which the projecting stud may be slid.

7. An ice pick comprising in combination, a hollow handle having a longitudinally extending slot, a pointed stem sliding in the hollow of said handle and having a laterally projecting stud sliding in the slot in said handle, a pin projecting from said handle and a collar rotatively mounted at a fixed point upon said handle and having a bayonet slot for receiving the projecting stud, and having an inclined edge adapted to engage with the projecting pin to frictionally secure the collar between the pin and a shoulder on the handle.
