T. H. MONTAGUE.

ORTHODONTIA APPARATUS.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 3, 1909. Serial No. 531,161.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE H. MON- noun, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blue Island, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Orthodontia Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in orthodontia apparatus, and is fully described and explained in the specification and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my improved apparatus showing the same in the position which it occupies in use upon a set of teeth; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing such parts of a modified form of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, as embody the essential features of my invention; Fig. 3 is a radial section through the sleeve and anchor band; Fig. l is a perspective view of a preferred form of the device and Fig. 5 is a radial section through the sleeve and anchor band of the construction shown in Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, and particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 thereof showing the modified form of my device; A is an anchor band of any desired form which is adapted to be attached to one of the teeth in the usual manner. This anchor band has projecting form one side thereof an ear a perforated in a line parallel to the axis of the anchor band, as illustrated. Above this ear 0. is a longitudinally perforated sleeve B to \vhich is attached a downwardly extending pin 6 which runs through the ear or and is held in place therein by means of a nut 6 This sleeve is adapted to receive the tension wire which is of usual form and performs its accustomed function in the straightening of the teeth.
Referring to the preferred form of construction shown in Fig. 4, A is the anchor band which is similar to the anchor band A in Fig. 2. This anchor band has projecting from it radially a small threaded stud a to which is attached a longitudinally perforated sleeve B It will be seen from the foregoing description of construction that the modified form of device is so arranged that its sleeve can be oscillated about its axis, that is, it-
can oscillate in a plane transverse to the axis of the tooth, while in the preferred form of construction the sleeve can also oscillate about its axis which in this case is radial to the anchor band and therefore the sleeve will oscillate in a plane parallel to the axis of the tooth. The two forms of construction herein shown are desirable for use in orthodontia work, because in many cases the tooth to which the anchor band is applied may move slightly thereby making an adjustment of the anchor band upon the tooth necessary unless some flexibility be afforded between the sleeve and the anchor band such as is provided in my device. The modified form of construction is particularly desirable for this reason and also because by its use no such accurate adjustment of the anchor band to the tooth is necessary as in the case of devices where the anchor band is rigidly attached to the sleeve. The preferred form of device is more par ticularly advantageous in most cases in which the tooth to which the anchor band is applied is not quite vertical, or at right angles to the plane which it is desired to have the tension wire occupy and were this device not adopted an anchor band with a sleeve at a special angle would have to be applied.
The present application has been restricted to broad claims covering both forms of the device herein illustrated, and to specific claims on the form of the device shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and the form specifically illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 is claimed in an application filed on the 25th day of J anuary,1910 and allotted Serial Number 539,987, no claim to such specified form being made herein.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction of my improved device, without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I' do not intend, therefore, to limit myself to the specific form herein shown and described.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In an orthodontia apparatus, an anchor band, and a sleeve pivotally connected thereto and adapted to receive the tension wire.
2. In an orthodontia apparatus, an an- Patented N0VL14, 1911.
chor band adapted to be attached to a tooth, of center, whereby either end of the arch a projecting part rigid upon the anchor band tube may be extended toward the cenband and a sleeve pivoted to said projectter of the arch band.
ing part. 1 I THEODORE H. MONTAGUE.
In a dental regulator, an arch band, Witnesses:
a clamp band, an arch band tube pivotally L. HEIsLAR,
connected With the clamp band at one side R. SGHAEFER.
