To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MOMYLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Olam- Shell Buckets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a practical clam shell bucket which embodies means whereby, through the manipu lation of the so-called closing ropes and opening ropes, the bucket jaws may be closed so as to pick up a full load or may be opened so as to complete the discharge of that load.
The invention, in the best form known to me, is shown in the accompanying drawings; said construction and its principle of operation are hereinafter described; and the combinations of parts which comprise the invention are defined by the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure l is a plan view of the bucket structure when the jaws thereof are opened. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof when the jaws are closed. Fig. 3 is an end view of the bucket structure when the jaws are closed; and Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of the bucket structure when the jaws are closed, said section being in the plane indicated by line M on Fig. 1.
Referring to the parts by letters A, A represent the two bucket jaws.
B represents the frame structure from which the jaws are movably suspended by means of the pivoted links to be described. This frame structure comprises four parallel vertical plates, 6, b, 6 b and means for connecting said plates to form a rigid structure. These means include angle irons 6 b riveted to the said plates, as shown most clearly in Fig. 1. The frame includes also certain transverse rods J, K and N, and distance sleeves j, 70 and n upon said rods. The
rod N is in what may be termed the central vertical plane of the structure, which plane is indicated on Fig. 2 by the line XX. The rods J and K are located equal distances on opposite sides of this plane. The rods J and K extend through all four of the plates specified, but the rod N extends only through the plates 6, 6
Two links C, C are hung on cylindrical parts of the rod J and when the bucket jaws are closed, these links extend in approximately vertical direction downward, and their lower ends loosely embrace the cylindrical parts of a rod P which is fixed to and extends between the sides of the jaw A at the upper edge of said jaw and about midway between its front and rear ends. Two other links G are in like manner hung from the rod K, and in like manner loosely embrace the cylindrical parts of a rod R, which extends between and passes through the sides of the jaw A near the upper edges thereof abgut midway between its front and rear en s.
Two links D are respectively pivoted to the two plates 6, b the pivotal axis being in the central vertical plane XX before referred to; and the pivotal axis is moreover in a plane below that in which the two rods J, K lie. These links D extend downwardly and toward the rear end of the bucket jaw A, to which end they are pivotally connected, because they loosely embrace the cylindrical part of a rod a which extends across the bucket, and through both sides thereof near the upper edge and close to the rear ends of said sides. Two other links D are pivoted upon the same axis to the side members 5, b and they extend to and are pivotally connected with the jaw A, because they loosely embrace a rod a which extends across the bucket and through both sides thereof near the upper edge and close to the rear ends of said sides. Because of the disposition and connection of these links C, O and D, D the buckets, when moved apart, will swing to the substantially vertical position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2; and when the bucket jaws are swung together, they will swing to the substan- 9 tially horizontal positions shown by full lines in said figure. In order to draw the jaws closed sheaves 39 may be rotatably mounted upon the rod P, and similar sheaves 7" may be 'rotatably mounted on the rod R; and two ropes which may be dead ended to rod R may be reaved around their associated sheaves p and 7' and may go thence upward in engagement with two guide sheaves I, I which are rotatably mounted between the frame plates 6, 5, b 6 respectively, as shown in Fig. 1.
In order to open the bucket jaws, the following mechanism is provided. A horizontal rod F is extended through vertical slots b in the two frame members Z), If. To one projecting outer end of this rod two links G, G are pivotally suspended, and the lower ends of these links loosely embrace the rods 1 and R respectively. Two other links G G are pivotally hung from the other end of the rod F and they respectively embrace the rods P and B. On the rod N a sheave L is rotatably mounted. Upon the rod F an other sheave f is rotatably mounted. The opening rope S may be dead ended on the rod N and may extend therefrom around the sheave f, thence around the sheave L, and upward in engagement with a sheave T which is rotatably hung in the ends of links T which are themselves loosely hung on the rod F. This cable may also go between guide sheaves U, U rotatably mounted on the frame structure between the plates 1), b
lVhen the weight of the bucket is allowed to hang from the opening rope S, and this rope is drawn upward, the rod F and the parts carried thereby will be caused to move downward in the slot 6 The links G and G acting like toggles will thrust the rods P and R apart, thereby opening the jaws, which jaws through the action of the links D, D and C, C will swing to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The jaws will be closed when the opening rope is allowed to go slack, and the closing ropes are drawn upward.
The primary function of the links C, C is to support the bucket jaws, said links serving as swinging supports for the pivots on which said jaws are hung. The primary function of the links D, D is to tilt or swing the bucket jaws upon their pivotal connections with links G, C. The primary function of the links G, G is to open the jaws. For convenience in phrasing the appended claims the links G, G will be termed supporting links, the links D, D will be termed tilting links; and the links G, G will betermed opening links.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In a clam shell bucket, the combination of a frame structure, and two bucket aws, with supporting links pivotally suspended from said frame structure on opposite sides of its central vertical plane and pivotally connected at their lower ends with the two bucket jaws respectively at points intermediate of the front and rear ends of said jaws, tilting links pivoted to said frame structure in substantially the vertical central plane thereof and in a horizontal plane below that of the pivots of the supporting links, said tilting links being pivotally connected at their lower ends with the two jaws respectively near the rear ends thereof, a member which is movable vertically in the frame structure, and opening links pivotally suspended from said member and pivoted at their lower ends to the bucket jaws respectively, at points intermediate of the front and rear ends thereof, an opening rope, means operated thereby for drawing the vertically movable member downward when the weight of the bucket is suspended from said rope, a closing rope, and means operated thereby for drawing the bucket jaws together when the weight of the bucket is sustained by said closing rope.
2. In a clam shell bucket, the combination of a frame structure, and two bucket jaws; each having a rod (P, It) extending transversely between its sides and in engagement therewith near their upper edges and intermediate of the front and rear ends, and each of said bucket jaws having another transverse rod (0, 0) extending between the upper edges of the sides near the rear end thereof, supporting links which are pivotally suspended from said frame structure on opposite sides of its central vertical plane, and which at their lower ends loosely embrace the rods P and R respectively, tilting links pivotally suspended from said frame structure in the central vertical plane thereof and in a horizontal plane below that of the pivots of the supporting links, the lower ends of said tilting links loosely embracing the rods a, a respectively, a member which is vertically movable in the supporting frame, opening links pivotally suspended from said member and at their lower ends loosely embracing the rods P and B respectively, an opening rope, means operated thereby for drawing said member downward in its guide-ways, a closing rope, and means operated thereby for drawing the two bucket jaws toward each other.
3. In a clam shell bucket, the combination of a frame structure, and two bucket jaws, means for supporting the bucket jaws from said frame structure, means causing the bucket jaws to tilt when they are moved apart, a member which is vertically movable in said supporting frame, opening links pivoted to said member and to the bucket jaws respectively, a sheave pivoted to the lower end of said frame structure, an opening rope acting upon the vertically movable member and going around said sheave and thence upward, links pivoted to said vertically movable member and a guide sheave mounted in the outer ends of said links to be engaged by the upwardly extended stretch of said opening rope.

In a clam shell bucket, the combination of a frame structure comprising four parallel vertical plates rigidly connected to gether, the two middle plates having vertical slots, two bucket jaws, supporting links pivoted to said frame structure on opposite sides of its central vertical axis and pivot ally connected at their lower ends with two jaws respectively near the upper edges thereof and at points intermediate of their front and rear ends, tilting links pivotally connected with said frame structure on coaxial pivots which are in a plane below the suspending pivots of the supporting links, and pivotally connected also with the two bucket jaws at points near their rear ends and near their upper edges, a vertically movable rod which extends between the two central frame members and projects through the slots thereof, two pairs of links loosely mounted on the projecting ends of said rod and at their lower ends pivotally connected with the bucket jaws respectively at points between their front and rear ends, a sh'eave carried by said rod, a rod extending obliquely between and through the lower ends of the middle frame members, a sheave mounted upon said rod, an opening rope connected with the last mentioned rod and reaved around the said two sheaves and extending from the lower sheave upward, and a guide sheave supported by the vertically movable rod for the guidance of said upward stretch of the opening rope, and means 1 for closing said bucket aws.
5. In a clam shell bucket structure, the
combination of a head composed of parallel vertical plates rigidly connected together, said plates having in the central vertical plane thereof vertical guideways, two bucket jaws, supporting and tilting links pivotally suspended from said head and pivoted to said bucket jaws, a member mounted in said guideway for Vertical movement therein, a sheave rotatably supported by said head below said member, links pivotally suspended from said member and pivotally connected to the bucket jaws, means for opening the bucket jaws, comprising a rope having a connection. with said vertically movable member and passing about said lower sheave and thence upwardly so that when the load is placed on said rope, said member is caused to move downward and the bucket jaws are opened, and means for closing the bucket aws.
