EMANUEL G. KOI-IOUT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
KNOCKDOWN BOX.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMANUEL G. KOHOUT, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Boxes, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to what are known as foldable or knockdown boxes, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in con struction and operation, and comparatively inexpensive and which may be used for many purposes.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved knockdown box and showing the cover raised and the parts of the box in position for use; Fig. 2 a plan view on a reduced scale and showing the separate parts of the box folded together; and, Fig. 3 a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2 and on an. enlarged scale.
My improved knockdown box, comprises a bottom a, a top 6, side members 0 and end members d, and the top I) is hinged to one of the side members 0. The side members 0 consist of bottom portions 0 and top portions 0 and the end members (Z consist of bottom portions (Z and top portions (1 The bottom side members 0 and the bottom end members (Z are hinged to the bottom a as shown at e, and the top side members 0 are hinged to the bottom side members 0 as shown at f, while the top end members (Z are hinged to the bottom end members (Z as shown at g, and the hinges by which the top 72 is connected with one of the side members c are shown at h. The top side members 0 and the top end members (Z are provided at the top edges thereof and adjacent to the ends thereof with keepers 2' which may be formed integrally therewith, or may be secured thereto, and mounted therein are right-angled lock or tie pins 2' Specification of Letters Patent.

and the top and bottom side members 0 and c and the top and bottom end members d and d are also provided centrally of their ends and on the inner sides thereof, one with a pivoted hook and the other with an eye or keeper 3' whereby, when the parts of the body of the box are in position for use, as shown in Fig. 1, the top side members c and top end members (Z and the bottom side members 0 and the bottom end members (i may be locked together.
With this construction, all that is necessary to fold the parts of the box together, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, is to disconnect the hook members y from the eyes or keepers y' the top 6 of the box being first raised, and the side and end portions of the box, or the separate parts thereof, may then be folded outwardly and downwardly, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and folded fiat together, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In this operation the top parts 0 and (Z of the side and end members rotate on the lock or tie pins 2' as will be readily understood, while remaining securely connected, and in order to set the box up for use the top or cover 7) is first raised and the side and end members are then raised into the position shown in Fig. 1 and the hooks j connected with the eyes or keepers 7' and the box, or
the separate parts thereof, are again in position for use.
In folding the separate parts of the box together, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the bottom side and end portions 0 and (Z are extended laterally, while the top side and end portions 0 and (1 rest thereon, and the top or cover 6 rests on or over the bottom a, as clearly shown in said figures, and a large number of my improved knockdown boxes may thus be folded and packed in avery small space for shipment or other purposes.
My improved knockdown box may be made of sheet metal, or of wood, or other material according to the use or uses for which the same is intended and the strength thereof required, and while I have used the words sides and ends in the foregoing description or side portions and end portions, it will be apparent that these terms are only used for the purpose of description and my improved box may be made square in form, if desired. It will also be understood that any suitable lock or securing device may be provided for the top or cover 6.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A knockdown box comprising a bottom, side and end members and a top hinged to one of the said parts, the side and end members being hinged to the bottom and con sisting of separate similar parts hinged together and adapted to fold outwardly where hinged the top parts of the side and end portions being also provided at the corners of the box and at the top thereof with loose and folding connections whereby when the separate parts of the box are folded together the top corners thereof will move downwardly without the separation of the side and end members, and when the side and end members are raised for use said corners will move upwardly without disconnection of said side and end members at the top thereof, said side and end members being also provided with other means for securing them together when the parts of the box are in position for use.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 19th day of January 1911.
