VENTILATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM McDnRMoTr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ventilators, of which the following is a.
specification, reference being made to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates more particularly to that class of ventilators which utilize the natural movement of the outer air and it has been the special object of my invention to provide a ventilator which shall both direct a current of air into a building to be ventilated and at the same time draw air out of the building, or which is capable of doing either of these things independently of the other.
It has been a further object of my invention to provide a means whereby the movable parts of a ventilator of this general type may be securely mounted in a manner permitting easy, noiseless motion, without loss of adjustment of parts.
My invention may be most readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a vertical cross section of the ventilator. Fig. 2 is a view looking downward on the device cut away on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more specifically to the drawing, A is a funnel, shaped like the frustum of a cone, in which is a smaller funnel 13, divided by a partition C, and mounted upon the pipes b and c in a manner whereby a passage on is left between the casings of the funnels A and B. The passage 05 is preferably restricted near the large end of the funnel A. A band D mounted upon brackets d surrounds the larger end of the funnel A and converges toward it abruptly. A vane E is mounted upon the top of the funnel A and projects outwardly from the large end thereof. A hood F surrounds the pipes b and 0, and all of the above described parts are revolubly mounted upon a rod G, which is mounted on brackets g, g in the pipe 6 over which the pipe 5 loosely fits. The rod Gr passes into a sleeve H, which is securely mounted on the funnel B and passes downwardly through the pipe I), in which it is rigidly supported by the bracket h. A ball bearing 9 may advantageously be placed between the top of the rod G, and the bearing block h on the funnel B. An upwardly extending flange J, surrounds the pipe 5 and fits loosely within the hood F, thereby forming a chamber 0 from which leads a pipe 0 The operation of my device is as follows The wind striking the vane E will bring the small end of the funnel A into the wind causing it to blow therein and a part of the air current will enter the corresponding end of the funnel B and striking the partition C will be deflected downward through the pipe 0 and into the chamber 0 from whence it maypass, whatever the position in the chamber 0 of the pipe 0 owing to the rotation of the top parts, into the pipe 0 by which it may be led to any part of the building to be ventilated. A current of air will also pass through the passage orbetween the casings of the funnels A and B and issue from the large end of the funnel A. This will cause an outward suction of the air at the large end of the funnel B thus drawing air upward through the pipe 6 which may extend to any part of a building to be ventilated and thus draw air from it. Air passing under the band D will be deflected diagonally across the large end of the funnels A and B thus assisting the outward suction of the air at the large end of the funnel B. I find this deflecting band B a most valuable auxiliary in light and varying breezes which may be insufiicient to rotate the device fully into operative position for it catches and deflects currents of air which blow diagonally across the funnel A.
It is apparent that the intake and exhaust passages of my device are quite independent of each other and either may be closed without effecting the operation of the other.
My device is particularly valuable for circulating the air within buildings to effect an even distribution of heat.
Should the top parts of my ventilator be lifted by the wind they will still be maintained in the proper alinement with the pipe 6 by means of the sleeve H which will guide the top back into proper position when it drops again.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim is 1. In a ventilator of the character specified the combination of an outer funnel, an inner funnel, a partition in said inner funnel, an intake passage on one side of said partition, an outlet passage on the other side of said partition said intake passage being adapted to receive and conduct a part of a current of air blowing into said outer funnel and said outer funnel being adapted to direct the remainder of said current of air past the mouth of said outlet passage in a manner whereby an outward draft is created therein.
2. In a ventilator of the character specified the combination of an outer funnel, an inner funnel,a partition in said inner funnel, an intake passage on one side of said partition said intake passage being adapted to receive and conduct a part of a currentof air blowing into said outer funnel and said outer funnel being adapted to direct the remainder of said current of air past the mouth of said outlet passage in a manner whereby an outward draft is created therein, and
means for rotatably mounting said funnels.
3. In a ventilator of the character specified the combination of a rotatable top, an intake passage and an outlet passage in said top, a pipe leading downward from said in-take passage in said top, a pipe leading downward from said outlet passage in said top, a pipe above which one of said pipes leading downward from said top is loosely mounted in a manner forming substantially a continuation thereof, means surrounding all said pipes forming a chamber into which the other of said pipes leading downward from said top enters, a pipe leading from said chamber and means whereby said top is rotatably mounted.
