:Doon-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oet. 3, 1911.
` Application filed May 5, 1911. Serial No. 625,350.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. MILES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hopkins, county of Allegan, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Openers, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to improvements in door openers and has for its object the provision of a door opener adapted to be operated by the foot, which is simple of construction and eflicient in use.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is an exterior elevation of a door equipped with an opener embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged section taken on line of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section showing the connection of the opener with the knob of the door, F ig. 4 is a view illustrating the guide strap employed in the device, and Fig. 5, is a detail section illustrating the means for pivoting the oper ating lever to the door.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises an operating lever 1 formed of a single piece of wire bent at one end to form a pivoting coil 2, at its central portions to form a vertically disposed attaching eye 3 and a horizontally disposed guide eye 4, and at its outer end to form an eye 5 adapted to be engaged by the foot. The lever 1 is pivoted to the lower portion of the door by means of a sleeve 6 inserted through coil 2 and a washer 7 placed over the outer end of sleeve 6, said sleeve and washer being secured in position by means of a screw 8 passing into the lower portion of the door. A guard plate 9 is secured to the lower portion of the door ad] acent lever 1 to prevent marring or scratching of the door by the foot or by the lever 1. A guide strap 10 is passed through guide eye 4 and secured in position by means of screws 11 passing through eyes in the ends of said strap. An operating arm 12 is clamped to the door knob by means of a clamping screw 13 and arm 12 is connected with the attaching eye 3 o f the lever 1 by means of a connecting rod 14 or other suitable means. By
this construction it will be observed that a person having both hands occupied may readily open t-he door by depressing the free end of lever 1 with his foot. The construction disclosed for this purpose will be found to be very simple and eliicient in use.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into efl'ect, this is capable of variation and modification without departn ing from the spirit of my invention. I, therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction as set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a door provided with a knob, of a lever formed of a piece of wire bent at one end to form a pivoting coil, at its central portion to form a guide eye and an attaching eye and at its other end to form a foot eye, pivotal means passing through said coil and into the lower portion of said door, a curved strap secured to the door and passing through said guide eyes; an operating arm secured to the door knob; and a connection between said arm and attaching eye of said lever, substantially as described.
, 2. The combination with a door provided with a knob, of a lever formed of a piece of wire bent at one end to form a pivoting coil, at its central portion to form a guide eye and an attaching eye and at its other end to form a foot eye, pivotal means passing through said coil and into the lower portion of said door, a guard plate secured to said door and adjacent said lever, a curved strap secured to said door and passing through said guide eye an operating arm secured to the door knob, and a connection between said arm and the attaching eye of said lever, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a door provided with a knob, of a lever formed of a piece of wire bent at one end to form a pivoting coil, at its central portion to form a guide eye and an attaching eye and at its other end to form a foot eye, pivotal means passing through said coil and into the lower portion of the door, said means comprising a distancing sleeve and a screw passing through said sleeve; a guard plate secured to said door In testimony whereof I have signed my adjacent said lever; a curved strap secured name to this specification in the presence of to the door and passing through said guide two subscribing witnesses.
eye; an operating arm secured to the door WILLIAM C. MILES. knob, and a connection between said arm Witnesses:
and attaching eye of said lever, substantiallyV D. B. KIDDER,
as described. C. H. FURBER.
