county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Feeding Mechanism for Paper and Cardboard, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accom panying drawing, forming a part thereof.

of a part of a printing press equipped with feeding mechanism embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, certain parts being broken away and shown in horizontal section; Fig. 3 is a partial end view as seen from the right with reference to Fig. 1, the type cylinder, a portion of the frame and other parts of the machine being removed and certain parts shown in vertical cross section; Fig. a is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 4 at, Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional and diagrammatic View of the nipper and associated parts, illustrating the operation of the nipper.
Although for the purpose of illustration and explanation the invention is shown and particularly described as embodied in a printing press, it is applicable to other machines to which blanks or sheets of paper or other material are to be fed.
Referring to the drawing, a designates a rotary member, in the present case the impression cylinder of a printing press, and Z) is the type cylinder, which is connected at one end with the cylinder a by gears c and (Z, as shown in Fig. 2. The cylinder (4 is formed or provided at or adjacent to one of the longitudinal edges of its tympan face with a seat or gripping face 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. A rocker shaft f, journaled in the cylinder a parallel with its axis 1 and projecting therefrom through one of The maln objects of this lnvention are to the cylinder heads, is provided near its inner end with a radial arm 9 and at its outer end with a two-armed angular lever it, having one of its arms parallel with the arm 9. The shaft 2' is provided at its outer end with an arm j and at its inner end on opposite sides of the arm 9 with segment gears 70.
Z is a nipper forked to fit over the arm 9 to which it is pivoted, and having on each side thereof concentric with its pivot, gear teeth which mesh with the gears 70, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The lever h and the arm j are provided with rollers m and a, and springs 0 and connecting said lever and arm with the adjacent cylinder head, yieldingly hold said rollers against the peripheral faces of sta-- tionary cams g and 1". These cams in the present case are fiXed upon a sleeve which forms a journal box for the cylinder a, as shown in Fig. 2.
The cylinders 04 and Z) are turned by a gear 8 mounted on the driving shaft t and meshing with the gear (Z, as shown in Fig. 2.
Below an opening in the horizontal bed a of the machine, a reciprocating carriage o is supported and guided on a horizontal rod 10, arranged lengthwise of the machine and transverse to the aXes of the cylinders 64 and b. The carriage 'v is held from turning upon the rod to by a lateral arm 00 provided with a roller which is confined between guide ways 3 parallel with said rod. The opening in the bed a is spanned by longitudinal blank supporting and guiding strips 2.
Gage stops 2 are adjustably attached to arms 3 on a transverse rocker shaft 4, which is journaled in upwardly projecting ears on the carriage 1). An arm 5 fixed on this shaft,
is provided with a roller 6, which runs on a cam or guide way 7 having an upward incline 8 at the end nearest the cylinder at. A spring 9 holds the roller 6 against the guide way 7 and the stops 2 project normally above the strips 2.
Arms 10, called joggers, are mounted on a transverse rocker shaft 11, which is journaled in downwardly projecting ears or bearings on the carriage *1), parallel with the shaft 4. An arm 12, fixed on the shaft 11,
is provided with a roller 13, which is held by a spring 14L in engagement with a cam or guide way 15, having a downward incline or bend at the end farthest from the cylinder a.
A reciprocating movement is imparted to the carriage o by a cam 16, fixed on the shaft or a trunnion of the cylinder 6 and engaging with a roller 17 on one arm of a bell crank or angular lever 18. The other arm of this lever is provided with an adjustable roller 19, engaging a rider arm 20 on a transverse rocker shaft 21. Upon the shaft 21 is mounted an upwardly extending arm 22, which is connected at its upper end by a link with the carriage o. A spring 23 connected with the arm 21 and tending to withdraw the carriage from the cylinder a, holds said arm in engagement with the roller 19, and the roller 17 in engagement with the cam 16. A feed roller 24, mount ed on a transverse shaft 25, above the bed a and adjacent to the front or outer side of the opening therein, is driven by a belt connecting a pulley 26 on said shaft with a pul ley 27 on the driving shaft 6. The roller 24 runs in contact with an idle roller 28, located below it in the bed a.
The mechanism hereinbefore described operates as follows: The cylinder or rotary carrier (4 being turned in the direction indicated by arrows on Figs. 1 and 4, while the roller m traverses the higher or larger part of the cam g, the arm 9 and the shorter arm of the lever h are held in a radial position, as shown in F 4:, and while the roller n traverses the higher or larger part of the cam r, the nipper Z is held against the seat or gripping face a of cylinder a.
In Figs. 1 and 4, the several parts of the mechanism are shown in the positions they occupy when the carriage has advanced a blank into position to be gripped by the nipper and just after the nipper has closed against the blank and gripped it against the seat or face 6. The driving connections of the carriage being made and adjusted to advance the blank at a speed cor responding with the peripheral speed of cylinder a, the stops 2 and joggers 10 move forward with the blank when it is gripped, but the roller 6 running up the incline 8, carries said stops below the blank supporting and guiding strips .2 into the position indicated by dotted lines at 2, Fig. 1, so as to release the blank and permit it to be drawn by the nipper between the cylinders a. and Z), the joggers advancing to the position indicated by dotted lines When the nipper arrives at the position indicated by dotted lines at Z Fig. 4, the roller a passes from the larger to the smaller part of the cam 9'- and turns the nipper Z outward, thereby releasing its grip on the blank, which is removed from the cylinder in the usual or any suitable manner. The roller m on lever h thereupon passes from the larger to the smaller part of the cam 9, thereby turning the rocker shaft f and swinging the arm 9 with the nipper forward in the direction of rotation of cylinder an away from the seat 6. The nipper is carried in this relation to the seat 6 till it arrives in position to receive another blank, as shown in Fig. 5. In the meantime, the forward edge of a blank advancing with the carriage passes under the seat or face 6 and over the nipper into the position in which it is shown in Fig. 5. The roller at now passing from the smaller to the larger part of the cam q, swings the arm 9 back ward in a direction reverse to that of the rotation of cylinder a, carrying the nipper underneath the advancing blank opposite the seat or face 6, and the roller a passing from the smaller to the larger part of the cam 1", thereupon swings the nipper inward, gripping the blank against said seat, the stops 2 descending and releasing the blank from the carriage as it approaches the limit of its advance movement. The carriage returning to its initial position, the stops 2 and joggers 10 assume the positions indicated by dotted lines at 2 and 10", Fig. 1, just before a blank clears the feed rollers 24 and 25, the joggers having been swung backward and downward below the blank supporting and guiding strips 2 by the roller 13 passing down the incline or curve at the front end of the cam or guide way 15.
lVhen the blank has cleared the feed rollers the carriage moves forward and the roller 13 running up the incline or curve of the guide way 15, swings the joggers upward and forward behind the blank, advancing it against the stops 2, with which they cooperate to positively and exactly hold it in place on the carriage until it is gripped by the nipper Z and carried between the cylinders a and b.
The extreme positions of the lever 18 and of the arms 20 and 22 are indicated by dotted lines on Fig. 1.
Various changes in the details of con struction and in the arrangement of parts may be made to adapt the mechanism to different machines for various purposes, without departing from the principle and intended scope of the invention.
This application is a division of application Serial No. 423,312, filed March 26, 1908.
W'e claim:
In feeding mechanism of the class designated, the combination of a rotary member having a seat or gripping face, a rocker shaft'journaled in said member parallel with its axis and having a radial arm and an angular lever fixed thereon, a nipper pivoted to said arm and provided With gear teeth, a shaft journaled in said arm and lever parallel with the rocker shaft and provided with an arm and with a gear in mesh With the teeth on the nipper, stationary cams surrounding the axis of said rotary 15 member at one end thereof, and springs holding the arm on the gear shaft and the lever on said rocker shaft in engagement with said cams.
