TYPOGRAPHICAL GASTING MACI-IINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL MUEI-ILEISEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at 23 Chausseestrasse, Berlin, N. 4, in the Empire of Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Typographical Oasting-lVIachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typographical casting machines of the class in which matrices stored in magazines, are (by key-controlled mechanism) released therefrom in order of composition, and subsequently presented, either individually or collectively, to a casting mold into which molten metal is injected for the production of a body having one or more printing characters on one end as in separable type, or a line of such characters on one edge as have the cast type bars produced by the machines known commercially under the trade mark Linotype.
The invention is especially applicable to the last-named machines and for that reason the following description deals with it only in that connection; it is, however, to be understood that the invention is not limited to that particular application which is selected for illustration merely as a convenient example.
The object of the invention is to provide new or improved mechanism whereby the actuation of each key for releasing a matrix, herein termed a first matrix, can be caused also to automatically effect the release of another matrix which, so far as regards its formative cavity, may or may not be similar to the first matrix; or one of the two matrices so released, may be a space matrix. Such an arrangement is especially applicable for use in composing border matrices and in the production of spaced-out matter such as is found in the emphasized portions of German letter press.
The accompanying drawings show one constructional form of apparatus embodying the invention.
In these drawings: Figures 1 and 2 respectively show the device in and out of operation, and Fig. 3 is a detail rear view.
By depressing a key 1, an escapement rod 2 is, in known manner, raised through the medium of a kev rod 3, tumbler or angle lever 4, cam 5, cam carriage 6, and constantly rotating roller 7. The escapement rod 2 acts upon the respective matrix escapement Specification of Letters Patent.

8 in the usual manner, and thereby releases a matrix 9 from the magazine. In order to produce, say for example, the before mentioned spaced-out printed matter, that is to say, Jrinted matter with larger than normal spaces between adjacent characters, a space matrix has to be released after the release of each character matrix, and this, according to the present invention, is effected automatically. For this purpose each of the escapement rods 2 is provided with a recess or notch 11, into which a car 12 or coupler can be inserted and from which the said bar can be readily disengaged. The bar 12 is secured to two levers 13 (only one is shown in the drawings) one at each end thereof, these levers being capable of rocking about co-axial pivots or a pivot rod 14-. The rear ends of the levers 13 are in pivotal engage ment with the upper end of a rod 15, whose lower end is pi votally connected to a lever 16 operatively connected with a rod 17, (resembling the before mentioned key rod 3) which, through a tumbler l8, cam 19, cam carriage 20 and escapement rod 21, operates the escapement appertaining to the magazine channel containing the respective space matrices. l Vhen, there'Iore, the bar 12, is in its foremost position, in which it is engaged with the recesses 11 of the escapement rods 2as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 each depression of a key 1, besides being causative of the release of the corresponding members 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21,
effects the release of a space matrix, the cam 19, being adapted to contact with the continuously rotating roller 22, as is the before described cam 5 with the roller 7. In other words, the operation of any one of the several escapement rods 2 effects the conjoint operation of the escapement rod 21.
As the raising of the rod 17, for releasing the space matrix, takes place a short time after the raising of the key rod 3, the character matrix has time to reach the assembler before the space does so. Should it be desired to prolong this period, the recesses 11 can be lengthened so that the escapement rods 2 have to ascend a correspondingly greater distance before actuating the bar 12. For those escapement rods 2 the movement of which is not required to effect the release of space matrices through the before described mechanism, I provide recesses 11 of such depth that the bottoms thereof will not reach the bar 12 when the said rods are iaised, as shown in Fig. 8. A similar recess 21 is formed in the rod 21 so that it will not engage the bar 12 in its upward movement. Of course, if the bar 12 were not extended past the rod 21, no recess would be necessary.
To render the device inoperative t'or ordi; nary composition, the pivot rod 14: is monnt ed in the upper ends of two levers 23 capable of turning about a pivot or co-axial pivots 24, and the lower end of one or each of which is pivoted to a stopping rod 25. When the rod 25 is in the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1, the bar 12 is in cooperation with the escapement rods 2 and the before-mentioned spacing is automatically effected, but when it is in the position in which it is shown in Fig. 2, the escapement rods 2 are free to move without operating the bar 12 or space matrix escapement.
Although the invention has hereinbefore been mainly described in connection with an arrangement wherein the escapement rods 2 and 21 appertain respectively to the release of character matrices and spaces, it will be readily understood that devices other than the said matrices may be indirectly controlled by them.
Having described my invention, I declare that what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a typographical machine, the combination of a plurality of independently operable escapement actuating devices, a further escapement actuating device adapted to release a matrix at each of its operations, and means whereby the independent operation of any one of the said plurality will effect the conjoint operation of the further actuating device.
2. In a typographical machine, the combination of a plurality of escapement actuating devices, a further escapement actuating device, means whereby the operation of any one of the said plurality will effect the con joint operation of the further actuating device, and mechanism for rendering said means active or inactive as desired.
3. In a typographical machine, the combination of a plurality of escapement actuating devices, a further escapement actuating device adapted to be operated by any one of said plurality, and intermediate connection means movable into and out of operative relation to said actuating devices at will.
a. In a typographical machine, the combination of a series of escapement actuating rods, a further escapement actuating rod, the bar 12, means to move the said bar into and out of engagement with a plurality of escapement rods, and connecting devices controlling the operation of the further escapement rod with which said bar cannot directly engage.
5. In a typographical machine, the combination of a series of escapement actuating rods, key mechanism controlling the operation of a plurality of said rods, and power mechanism to operate another of said rods, with a bar capable of being moved into and out of engagement with said plurality of key-controlled rods, and means connecting the bar with the said power mechanism, so as to efiect the operation of the further escapement red by that of any one of said plurality.
6. In a typographical machine, the combination of a magazine provided with a series of escapements, a corresponding series of independently operable actuating devices therefor, and means for connecting a plurality of said devices to another one thereof, whereby the independent operation of any one of the said plurality will effect the conjoint operation of the last mentioned actuating device.
