GEORGE W. YOUNG, OF SEYPIPEL, ARKANSAS.
BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 25, 1912.
Patented June 2, 1914:.
Serial No. 722,335.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnonsn lV. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seyppel, in the county of Crittenden, State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in boxes, and has for its object to so construct the same that it may be quickly and conveniently collapsed when not. in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a box which is exceedingly simple in construction and one which when collapsed will occupy a minimum amount of space so that the same may be stored and transported.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the box. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the box collapsed or folded. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4; is a similar view on line 1 lof Fig. 2.
The box consists of a plurality of sections 1, 2 and 3, preferably, the lower section 3 being provided with a bottom 1, while the remaining sections are bottomless. The side walls 5 of the sections are inclined, and as the sections 1 and 2 increase in size, the same will be prevented from becoming disconnected when extended as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. To hold the sections in their extended or unfolded positions, the section 2 or intermediate section has its side walls provided with interiorly arranged strips 6, similar strips 7 being secured near the upper edges of the section 1, the purpose of which will appear lat-er.
lPivotally connected interiorly, and upon the sidesof the section 2 are a plurality of spaced latches 8, the same being so arranged Copies of this patent may be obtained-tor that when one of their ends is resting upon the upper edge of the section 3 their other end will engage the strips 6, similar latches 9 being carried by the side walls of the section 1 so that their ends will engage the up peredges of the section 2 and strips 7 respectively. The latches 8 and 9 have their opposite ends rounded as at 10, and in opposite directions so that the same will more readily engage the strips and upper edges of the respective sections.
Arranged above the strips 7, and spaced therefrom are strips 11, which form guideways 12 for slidably receiving the cover 13.
When the box is in its collapsed condition the latches are arranged horizontally and occupy the spaces between the sections, and when it is desired "to unfold the box the section 1 is grasped and moved upwardly, the continued movement of which will position the sections, as shown in Fig. 3, whereupon the latches are operated so that they assume a vertical position, and at which time the ends thereof engage the respective strips and edges, thus preventing the sections from co].- lapsing or telescoping. By rounding the ends of the latches 8 and 9 the same will frictionally engage the strips and edges so that said latches will be prevented from accidental rotation. When the box is filled the material will positively prevent accidental rotation of the latches.
What is claimed is A box of the class described comprising five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
Washington, D. 0.
