PULLING-JACK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SERAPI-I ZIMMERMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Vincent, in the county of Conway and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulling- Jacks; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to jacks or stretchers for pulling stumps, tightening fence wires, and other similar purposes; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 a plan view of a jack constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a side view; and Fig. 3 is an end view of the same the links 14: and some other parts being omitted.
A frame 2 is provided and is formed of an elongated loop of metal having two parallel side bars. The free end portions of the side bars have two crossbars 3 secured one on each side of them. A wire, cord, or other connection, t is secured to the looped or U-shaped end of the frame. The side bars are each provided with a series of holes 5 which are arranged in staggered relation to each other, and which are spaced wider apart where nearer to the crossbars than at the looped end portion of the frame. A bar 7 is provided and is slidable between the crossbars 3 and between the side bars of the frame. A wire, cord, or other connection, 8 is secured to the outer end of the bar 7. An operating lever 9 is provided and has an elongated loop 10 which is slid over the frame, and 12 is a rounded or arcuate lug which projects from the middle part of the loop between the side bars of the frame and on the side of the lever farthest from the bar 7. This lug slides on the inner edges of the side bars and has a shank 22 on one side which is welded or otherwise secured to the middle portions of the loop 10. The position of this lug 12 on the opposite side of the loop from the fulcrum pins enables the device to be used to good advantage, and the shank stiffens the loop.

the lug 12 by a pin 15, and extend across the loop 10, and are pivoted to the bar 7 by a pin 16. Collars or distance pieces 23 are arranged on the pin 16 between the links 14: and the bar 7. A fulcrum pin 18 is provided, and is adapted to engage with any of the holes in the frame. 7 hen the fulcrum pin 18 is inserted as shown, the lever is moved pivotally by hand in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1, until the hole a: in the opposite side bar is uncovered by the lever. A second fulcrum pin 20 is then removed from its previous hole where shown and is inserted in the hole at, and the lever is moved pivotally in the reverse direction.
\Vhen the handle 9 commences its movement in the direction of the arrow, the lever turns on the pin 18 as a single fulcrum until the lug 12 touches the frame. The lever then turns on the lug 12 as an additional fulcrum and slides longitudinally of the handle 9 upon the pin. The lever slides and turns simultaneously against the frame and the pin during the latter part of its stroke and exerts a powerful pull on the fence wires.
The fulcrum pins are shifted alternately from one hole to another, and the lever is moved step by step along the frame dragging the bar with it and pulling upon the connections 4 and 8.
\Vhat I claim is:
In a pulling jack, the combination, with a frame provided with side bars having holes and movable fulcrum pins, of a bar slidable longitudinally between the side bars of the frame, an operating lever provided with a loop which slides loosely over the frame and engages with its fulcrum pins, a fulcrum lug secured to the middle part of the loop and projecting on the other side of it from the said bar and engaging with the side bars of the frame alternately when the lever is moved step by step in contact with the pins pertaining to the respective side bars, and links pivotally connecting the said lug and bar and straddling the loop.
