ATTACHMENT FOR SULKIES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JOHN A. LOGAN and WALTER F. DOWNS, citizens of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Posey and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Sulkies; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full,

clear, and exact description of the invention,

such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for sulkies, and has for its object to provide a device of the above character which may be easily applied thereto, without the necessity of making any material change in the construction of such sulkies.

Another object of our invention is to provide a device which will permit the operator of such sulkies to mount a curb without the necessity of turning around.

A still further object of our invention is to provide an attachment which will permit wheels to be attached to the forward braces and also to form a foot rest on which a child, upon being placed in the sulky, may

rest his feet.

With the above and other objects in view, we will now proceed to describe our invention in the following specification and ac companying drawings, in which,

Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a sulky showing our improved deplan view of our improved sulky attachment; and Fig. 3 is a front view in elevation.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 1 indicates generally a sulky of the preferred type, preferably comprising a seat 2 having at its lateral extremities the U-shaped members 3, which form the arms. Intermediate the ends of the arms of the U-shaped members 3, we preferably provide a pivot 4 to which are secured the braces -5 of the back 6. A handle 7 is secured to the seat and extends downwardly therefrom to the axle 8. This axle 8 is carried on braces 9 which are secured to the bottom of the seat in any preferred manner. An enlarged portion 10 is formed at the lower extremities of the braces and adapted to receive the axle 8, whereby the same is held Specification of Letters Patent.

rigidly with relation to the seat 2. Intermediate the ends of the axle is preferably secured the end of the handle 7, to which a brace member 11, carrying the foot rest 12, is secured. The opposite end of the brace member is extended, as indicated at 13, and passes around the axle and holds the same tightly against the lower extremity of the handle 7. An extension 14 is formed integrally with this extended portion 13 of the brace member and projects forwardly, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1, and is then bent upwardly and rearwardly, as clearly illustrated at 15. The upper terminal of the rearwardly extending portion is secured to the seat 2, as is clearly illustrated at 16.

An axle 17, having rotatably mounted at each end wheels 18, is provided on its upper side with a foot rest 19. This foot rest 19 extends for substantially the entire length of the axle, and is provided intermediate its length with a groove 20 which is adapted to receive the strap 15 of the sulky when the device is in operation. Intermediate the groove 20 and the end of the foot rest, we preferably provide the reduced portions 21, which are adapted to receive the foot of the child and hold the same from becoming accidentally displaced. Adjacent the ends of the axle 17, we preferably provide apertures 22 which are adapted to receive a cotter pin 23, by means of which the wheel 18 is retained upon the end of the axle. A rearwardly extending projection 24 is formed integrally with the axle and extends for a short distance parallel with the strap 15, to which it is secured. This projection tapers rearwardly, as clearly illustrated at 25, and is adapted to rigidly hold the device in place and thereby form a more secure brace.

It will be seen from the foregoing that our device may be easily and quickly applied to the form of sulky now in use without necessitating any material change in the construction of such sulkies. It will also be noted that it will materially assist the operator when coming to a curb in raising the device over such curb, inasmuch as it is adapted to be used in a manner similar to an ordinary perambulator.

While in the foregoing we have shown and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, we wish it to be understood that we may change the specific arrangements of parts without in any way departing from the spirit and scope of our invention.

Having thus fully described our invention what we claim is:

In combination with a sulky having a forwardly extending projection, an attachment comprising a foot rest, an axle formed integrally with said foot rest, said foot rest having a groove intermediate its length, an

extension formed at the rear extremity of said foot rest, said extension tapered rearwardly and adapted to engage the forward extension of the sulky, whereby the device is secured in place.
