UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN Y. LINTNER AND LOURY L. BENJAMIN, OF BLAIRSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that we, JOHN Y. LINTivER and LOURY L BENJAMIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Blairsville, in the county of Indiana and St-ate of Pennsylvae nia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification. A
The present invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and resides inthe construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a similar view with parts in section, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a similar section on .the line 4 4 of Fig. 1, and F 5 is a perspective view of the locking yoke.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 designates the stationary head or jaw which is provided with a shank 2. The shank, upon one of its faces, and at a suitable distance from the jaw 1, is channeled longitudinally its entire length, as indicated by thc numeral 3. This channel is closed at the end of the shank, through the medium of a ller 4, the said filler being in the nature of a rectangular block and is secured between the walls provided by the channel through the medium of removable elements, in the nature of screws 5. The inner edge of the filler 4 is beveled or inclined, as indicated by the numeral 6, as is also the inner or connecting wall of the channel, the said wall or end being indicated by the numeral \7. The transverse wall formed by the channel 3, between the walls or ends 6 and 7 is provided with teeth 8.
The numeral 9 designates the movable liaw which is arranged for slidable movement upon the shank 2, the said jaw having one of its sides or its side engaging the smooth surface of the wrench opposite the channel 3 and its toothed wall 4, enlarged, or provided with a transverse extension 10, whereby this portion of the jaw is afforded a greater bearing surface upon the shank 2.
The numeral 11 designates the locking element, the side arms of which having, what I will term, their upper ends, provided with a suitable registering opening 12 for the reception of a pintle 13, whereby Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led February 4, 1914.
Patented Apr. 28, 1914. Serial No. 816,641.
the yoke is secured to the jaw 9 to the opposite sides thereof, and at a point opposite the enlargement or extension 10. The side arms of the yoke are spaced to snugly engage with the opposite sides of the shank 2, and the connecting member 14 of the said side arms is provided with an opening 15 adjacent its lower corner, the said opening being' provided to receive one end of a spring 16 which bears against the outer face of the shank. The side arms of the yoke, which may be indicated by the numerals 17, are provided, between their upper ends or ears, formed with the openings 12 and the connecting member 14, with an integrally formed web 18, the said web being of a width corresponding with that of the channel 13, and being adapted to be received within the said channel, and what I will term the inner edge of the said web is formed with teeth 20 which are adapted to co-act with the teeth S in the channel of the shank 2. It will thus be noted that the web 18 is connected with the arms 17 of the locking bolt only at the portions thereof adjacent the ears provided with the openings 12, a suflicient space being left between the sides 17 and the sides of the web to receive the side members of the shank provided by the channel 3. As stated, the opposite edges of the sides are beveled, so that the connecting member 14 is disposed a considerable distance below the ears or corners of the yoke provided with the openings 12, and when the spring 16 exerts a tension between the connecting member 14 and the shank 2,
the teeth 2O of the web 18 will be forced into engagement with the teeth 8 of the shank. The opposite walls of the web 18 are arranged at an inclination similar to the walls 7 and 6, and the said walls 7 and 6 are adapted to serve as abutments for limiting the sliding movement of the locking yoke in both directions.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is:
1. A wrench including a head and a shank, the said shank being channeled, the inner wall of the channel being formed with teeth, a movable jaw upon the shank, a yoke pivotally connected with the movable jaw, said yoke having a web connected therewith, the said web adapted to be received within the channel of the shank to engage with the teeth thereof, and a spring` between the yoke and shank for forcingthe web into engagement with the teeth of the shank.
2. n a wrench, a head provided with a shank, said shank having a channel, the inner wall of the channel being formed with teeth, the end walls oie the channel being beveled, a movable jaw upon the shank and having one of its sides enlarged, a yoke having inclined side members pivotally connected with the movable j aw, said yo-ke having an integrally formed web, the opposite walls of which are inclined, the said web being spaced from the side members of the yoke and adapted to be received within the channel of the shank, the inner wall of the web being provided with teeth which are adapted to co-act with teeth in the channel, the connecting member for the sides of the yoke having an opening, a spring Secured within the opening and arranged within the yoke and adapted to bear against the shank to swing the yoke to bring the teeth of its web into locking` position with the teeth of the channel.
In testimony whereof we aiiX our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
