CHEST-HANDLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that T, EDWARD R. SARGENT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chest-Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to chest handles, and the primary object which I have in view is the provision of a strong, durable handle which can be manufactured readily and at a low cost.

To this and other ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a chest handle embodying my improvements with the bail in the pendant position; Fig. 2 is an end view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a rear view of the bandle with the major portion of the bail omitted; Fig. t is a fragmentary end elevation showin how the plate and hail are assembled: and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary rear end of Fig. 4.

Referring to the drawing, the attaching plate 10, having the screw holes 11, is preferably made of a sheet metal blank having a horizontally directly forwardly bulged socket portion 12. This socket portion 12 terminates short of the respective ends of the plate and merges into shoulders 13 at the ends of the plate. These shoulders are located above the openings 14 at the ends of the socket portion 12. The bail consists of hanger arms 15, engaging the respective openings 14 of the socket portion 12, and a grip portion 16 having end sockets 17 fitting over the lower terminals 15 of the hanger arms. In manufacturing the device, the portions of metal at the respective ends of the plate beyond the extremities of the socket portion 12 are provided with longitudinal grooves 18, as shown in Fig. 4:, formed by indenting the metal from the front of the plate. This creates a rib 19 on the back of the plate, as shown in Fig. 5. Each groove 18 is preferably in approximate horizontal alinement with the center of the corresponding opening 14, and is adapted to clear a wing or lug 20 on the upper eX- tremity of the corresponding hanger arm. The hanger arms are raised into a Specification of Letters Patent.

horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 4, so that the wings or lugs will pass through the grooves 18 and permit the end portions 15 to enter the socket portion 12 to the necessary extent. In the meantime, the lower end portions 15 of the respective arms are properly assembled relative to the grip 16. The bail when thus assembled may then be permitted to drop into the position shown in Fig. 2 and the projections 19 are then hammered out by a suitable tool so as to confine the hanger arms permanently in the socket 12. In other words, the groove 18 is flattened out, and the metal portions 10 at the ends of the plate are so displaced as to block movement of the corresponding wings or lugs 20 in an outward direction relative to the socket, as will be understood.

When the handle is in use, the upper ends of the arms 15 abut'the shoulders 13, which form abutments for the bail in the elevated posit-ion of the latter. The grip 16, being free to turn relatively to the hanger arms, does not turn in the hand when the bail is raised. The wings or lugs 20 on the ends of the hanger arms in engaging the portions 10 of the plate effectively prevent outward displacement of the respective arms in respect tothe corresponding sockets of the plate and grip.

lVithout limiting myself to the construction shown, I claim:

1. In a chest handle, the combination of an attaching plate having a forwardly bulged socket open at the end, said plate having a transverse portion adjacent the mouth of said socket, and a hanger arm at the front of the plate entering said socket in front of said transverse portion, and provided with a wing or lug adapted to engage said transverse portion, whereby said hanger arm is retained in said socket; substantially as described.

2. In a chest handle, the combination of an attaching plate having a socket portion bulged forwardly from the plate and open at the respective ends, said ends of said socket portion terminating short of the ends of the plate, and the latter being provided with portions of metal adjacent the socket ends, separate hanger arms having upper ends located in the openings of the socket portion, means to prevent dislocation of said ends of the hanger arms relative to said socket portion, and a grip member having sockets at the respective ends in which the lower ends of the respective hanger arms are freely rotatable; substantially as described.

In a chest handle, an attaching plate having sockets facing toward the respective ends of the plate, a grip member, separate hanger arms having their upper ends extending into said sockets and their lower ends rotatably connected with said grip member, and interengaging means on the hanger arms and attaching plate respectively for preventing outward displacement ott each hanger arm relative to its socket, said means comprising a lug on the upper end oil each hanger arm, and a transverse portion on the plate to coiiperate with said lug; substantially as described.

In a chest handle, an attaching plate having sockets facing toward the respective ends of the plate, separate hanger arms having their upper ends extending into said sockets, means to retain. the upper ends of said hanger arms in said sockets, and a grip member connecting the lower ends of said hanger arms and freely rotatable with respect to said arms; substantially as described.

7. In. a chest handle, an attaching plate having sockets facing tovard the respective ends of the plate, a grip member having sockets in the respective ends thereof, separate hanger arms having their upper ends extending into the sockets ot' the plate, and their lower ends extending into the sockets ot' the grip member, and means for preventing dislocation of the hanger arms relative to the plate and grip member; substantially as described.

8. In a chest handle, an attaching plate having sockets facing toward the respective ends of the plate, a grip member having sockets in the respective ends thereof, separate hanger arms having their upper ends extending into the sockets of the plate, and their lOWGl ends extei'iding into the sockets of the grip member, and means for preventing dislocation of the hanger arms relative to the plate and grip member, com niising lugs on the hanger arms and cooperating lug-engaging portions on the attaching plat substantially as described.
