Description

P. P. HAZEN.
' WEIGHT.
Patented Apr. 28, 1914.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PEBLEY F. HAZEN, OF, ST. JOHNSBURY, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO THE E. AND T. FAIR- BANKS AND COMPANY, OF ST. JOHNSBURY, VERMONT, A CORPORATION OF VER- MONT.
WEIGHT.
Application filed August 11. 1911.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERLEY F. HAZEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. J ohnsbury, in the county of Caledonia, State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Veights, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in scales, and particularly to a weight and manner of constructing the same.
The invention consists in the manner of forming the weight, in which the body is cast with an open tubular handle, the adjustment of the weight being effected by pouring into it molten metal or other material suitable for the purpose, and then sealing the open end of the handle by a sealing plug, so applied or stamped that evidence of tampering will be plainly apparent.
The invention also consists in a weight having the body thereof cast with a pipe or tubular handle therein, into which weighting material may be placed, and a sealing plug for closing the open end of said han- The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 1s a top plan view of a weightconstructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section; and Fig. 3 is a side view.
The improved weight as shown in the drawings consists of a body portion 1 having cast integral therewith upwardly projecting arms 1. These arms are spaced and cast about a pipe by a tube 2, both ends of which are concealed within the arms 1 This tube is spaced above the body portion so as to form a handle by which the weight may be carried. One of the arms is formed with an opening which is in a line with the opening in the hollow handle. The proper adjustment of the weight is reached by pouring into said hollow handle lead or other molten material 4, or any suitable material to accomplish the purpose, whether molten or cold or poured in or pressed in.
After the adjustment has been completed, a sealing plug 5, preferably of the form shown, is driven into the opening 3 to fill it. This may be then stamped in any suitable way, and as it is driven firmly into place, any tampering with it will become readily apparent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A weight comprising a body portion having arms formed integral therewith, a hollow tubular handle cast into said arms and having its ends closed by said arms, one of said arms having an opening in alinement with the hollow tubular handle whereby a filling material may be inserted in the bandle, and means for closing said openings.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
