Description

T. P. JAMES.
Patented Apr. 28, 1914.
cowmlu'vumnm c0 unsmnorob u c @MTE jl SATS PATENT PLOW.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS Fnasnn JAMES, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Darlington, county of Darlington, State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows, cultivators, and the like and for convenience I will use the term )low in the eneric sense throughout the application.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide the plow with an adjustable share and a bar, substantially parallel with the draft beam, and arranged rearwardly of the share and adapted to be maintained in substantially parallel relation with the draft beam for its different adjustments.
Another object is to provide improved means for adjusting the position of the share, this means being mounted on the draft beam and permitting the adjustment while the share is in the furrow.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the aforesaid bar may be adjusted vertically so as to be thrown out of parallel relation with the draft beam, the means for adjustment being located on the draft beam where it is readily accessible and conveniently operated.
The novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation with the parts shown in a different position from that shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a detail.
Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates the draft beam, preferably formed of two parallel bars which are secured together at their forward end and spaced apart throughout the greater portion of their length. Handles 11 are secured to the beam 10 by means of a bolt 12, these handles being braced by means of bars 13 which permit the handles to be raised or lowered in the usual way. The brace bars 13 are secured to the beam by means of a bolt 14. Pivotally mounted on the bolt 12 is a downwardly extending link 15 composed of two parallel bars spaced a slight distance apart throughout the greater portion of their length and Specification of Letters Patent.

having secured to their lower ends, by means of a bolt 16, a share 17. A bar 18 having its forward end arranged between the bars constituting the link 15 is pivoted to the latter by means of a bolt'19 and has its rearward end pivoted to a pair of spaced bars constituting the link 20 by means of a bolt 21. The bar 18 has a wearing shoe 22 secured to the lower side thereof by means of a bolt 23. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the lower side of the shoe 22 is substantially parallel with the beam 10 and in order to maintain this parallel relation the upper ends of the bar constituting the link 20 are pivotally arranged on the bolt 14. The distance between the bolts 19 and 21 is substantially the same as the distance between the bolts 12 and 14 and also the distance between the bolts 12 and 19 is substantially the same as the distance between the bolts 1 1 and 21 so that the links 15 and 20 are substantially parallel and when swung on their pivots 12 and 14 maintain the shoe 22 substantially parallel with the beam 10.
It is sometimes desirable in the use of the plow to have the shoe 22 out of parallel relation with the beam 10 and for this purpose the bars which constitute the link 20 are provided with slots 24 through which the bolt 14: passes. A wedge member 25 having a handle 26 is pivotally mounted on the bolt lfb between the bars of the link 20 and when this wedge member is swung to bring the thicker portion thereof between the bars, the latter are clamped against the bars of the beam 10, and when the wedge member is swung so as to bring the thinner portion thereof between the bars, the latter are released and the bars may be raised or lowered relative to the beam and then clamped in any position to which they are adjusted.
For the purpose of adjusting the angle of the share 17 I have pivotally mounted between the bars constituting the beam 10 a hand lever 27 provided with a latch device 28 of any suitable construction, this latch device cooperating with a suitable quadrant 29 to hold the lever in any desired position. The lower end of the lever 27 is connected with the bars of the link 20 by means of a link 30 and as will be readily understood from the drawings, this construction permits the links 15 and 20 to be swung to different positions by moving the lever 27 By having the lever 27 extend above the beam 10, it is in a position where it is readily accessible and permits adjustment of the angle of the share without removing the plow from the furrow. Furthermore the adjustment of the link 20 can also be accomplished while the plow is in the furrow.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters-Patent is,
1. In a plow, the combination of a draft beam, a pair of downwardly extending links pivoted to said beam, the pivotal connection of one of the links being adjustable to permit raising and lowering of the link relative to the beam, a bar pivoted to the lower ends of said links and normally arranged substantially parallel with said beam, a hand lever pivoted to said beam and extending thereabove, a link connected with the lower end of said lever and one of the first mentioned links, and means for locking said lever in different positions.
2. In a plow, the combination of a draft beam, a downwardly extending link pivoted to said beam, a bar pivoted to the lower end of said link and extending rearwardly thereof, a link pivoted to the rearward end of said bar, a pin and slot connection between the latter link and said beam, and a rotatable wedge on said pin for securing the link to the beam.
3. In a plow, the combination of a draft beam, comprising two bars spaced apart at their rearward ends, a downwardly extending link pivotally arranged between said bars, a bar pivoted to the lower end of said link and extending rearwardly thereof, a link having its lower end. pivoted to the rearward end of said last mentioned bar and its upper end arranged between the bars of said beam and having a longitudinal slot therein, a bolt carried by said beam and extending through said slot, and a rotatable wedge member arranged on said bolt and adapted to clamp said link to the said beam.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
