UNITED STATES r Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. CLAN- DENING, a subject of the King. of Great Britain, residing at Carman, Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin- Automatic Ventilator- Controllers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and'use the same...
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to automatic 'ventilator operating mechanisms.
In order to more clearly disclose the construction, operation, and use of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming. part of the present application.
Throughout the several figures of the drawings like reference characters designate the same parts.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an enlarged sectional View of the actuating mechanism; Fig. 2 is across section on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the invention, applied; Fig. 4 is a lateral cross section through one of the windows, showing the connections; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view showing the means for returning the window to closed position.
The main objects of the invention are to provide a simple, eflicient, durable, economical, and compact means for automatically controlling the operating mechanism of car windows and ventilators, in accordance with and in proportion to the variations of temperature.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 1ndicates a sliding rod provided with suitable connections leading to the various windows or Ventilators .to be operated. One end of this rod is yieldingly connected to the lower end of aslotted bell crank lever 2, the opposite end of the lever being slidably connected to a piston rod 3 which has a free traveling movement in an upright cylinder 4. The lower end of this piston rod is provided with a pisto head 5 which rests upon and is actuated by a column of oil or other fluid sensitive to variations in temperature. This fluid is contained in a pipe or tube which extends for a considerable length within the car, building, or other construction in which the device is to be used. It is connected to the cylinder 4 by an elbow 7 or the like.

The amount of expansion, and the consequent movement of the piston head 5, depends upon the length of the column of fluid and this, in turn, depends upon the length of pipe 6. Therefore, in order to make the dea vice highly sensitive, it is only necessary to have the pipe 6 of considerable length.
The mvention may be used either with 'a fixed pivot or with a movable pivot for the lever 2. For summer weather, theseason. when the greatest and most complete ventilation is needed, the movable pivot is used. This movable pivot comprises a spool or roller 8 playing freely in the. elongated slot 9 of the lever 2. The roller 8 is carried by the end of an arm projecting from a piston rod 10 slidably mounted in a cylinder 11 and provided with a piston head 12 adapted to be actuated by a column of fluid in a tube, well, or pipe 13 connected to the bottom of the cylinder 11. The parts 10, 11, 12, and 13 are all substantially the. same as the parts 3, 4, 5, and 6. and are operated in the same manne But, they are arranged and exposed to atmospheric temperatures. Thus, during very hot summer weather, 8 will be caused to approach the upper end of the slot 9, thereby lengthening that arm of lever 2 which is connected to the rod 1. This, in turn, increases the length of stroke the pivotal point of the rod 1, thereby swinging the windows to a more widely open position. However, this does not in any way alter or change the degree of temperature at which the lever 2 will be actuated, as will be obvious. Lowering of the pivotal point 8 by drop in atmospheric temperature will have the reverse effect. Springs 14, or any other suitable device may be used for returning the window to normally closed position. In the drawings springs, only, have been shown.
The operation is as follows: The fluid contained by pipe 6 will expand as the temperature in the'car rises. As the fluid expands it will act on piston 5 to raise rod 3. As rod 3 is raised it will lift the outer end of the bell crank lever 2 and revolve the lever on its pivotal point 8. This will draw the rod 1 forward and open the windows against the action of the springs 14. As previously described, the pivotal point 8 of the bell crank lever is raised or lowered according to the temperature of the outslde am y this means, the extent/to which the windows are opened Will be automatically regulated so that in cold weather they will be opened. but a slight distance while in hot weather they will be opened to their full extent.
It is thought that the operation and use of the invention will be clear from the preceding detailed description.
Changes may be made in the construction, arrangement, and disposition of the several parts of the invention without in any way. departing from the field and scope of the same, and it is meant to include all such within this a plication wherein only a preferred form as been disclosed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz' 1.
