To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX SoHALsoHA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Summit, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pile-Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to hammers in which the blows upon the pile are delivered by a rapidly reciprocated ram-head, and more particularly to the connection of the valveoperating rod to such head.
It has been found in practice that the vibration due to the impact of the head upon the pile loosens the valve-rod when the latter is attached by ordinary means, the loosening tendency being materially increased by the lateral strains on the connection caused by swinging movements of the rod and head relatively to each other when the hammer is in operation. Such movements are slight but suflicient, with the vibrations due to shock, to increase greatly the mechanical difliculties involved in maintaining reliable fastening.
The object of the invention is to provide simple but eliicient means for reliably securing the valve-rod to the ram-head, and the invention consists in certain details of construction by which the above object is attained, to be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and show the invention as it has been carried out successfully in practice.
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a hammer equipped with the invention, and partly in elevation. Fig. 2 is a corresponding elevation of the ram-head and valverod alone, on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a vertical section, partly in elevation, corresponding to Fig. 2, the plane of section being indicated by the line 83 in the latter figure. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 45-4 in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a face view of the lower end of the valve-rod alone, on a still larger scale. Fig. 6 is a corresponding edge or side view. Fig. 7 is a transverse section on the line 7-7 in Fig. 5.

A is the body of the hammer, having a cylinder A formed therein in which is a piston B on a vertical piston-rod B reciprocated as usual by steam orcompressed air admitted and exhausted alternately from each end of the cylinder by the movement of a rotary valve, not shown, operated by the oscillations of a valve-stem C actuated b the valve rocking levers C C The latter are moved by cams or projections D D on a vertical valve-rod I) carried by the ram-head B on the lower end of the pistonrod B and reciprocating therewith in the usual manner.
The strains tending to ,loosen the valverod D from the ram-head B are very strong and are resisted by forming a vertical dovetailed recess in the face of the head in which is received the corresponding dovetailshaped lower end D of the valve-rod,1natching snugly in the recess and held by bolts F F extending through the valve-rod and head. Thus attached the longitudinal strains due to the sudden rapidly repeated shocks of the ram, tending to lift the rod from the head are resisted by the bolts F F, and the outward lateral loosening strains due to the pendulous or swinging movements of the valve-rod and head relatively to each other are resisted by the dovetail form of the rod and recess. After the nuts F F have been firmly tightened the protruding ends of the bolts are preferably slightly spread or upset by a center-punch or otherwise to prevent backing off and consequent loosening.
By seating the dovetailed end of the rod in the correspondingly dovetailed recess in the ram-head, and securing it by the transverse bolts, the outward strains on the latter are successfully resisted and the connection reliably maintained.
Such parts of the hammer as are not specifically described may be understood to be of the ordinary or any approved types.
