RAILWAY-TIE.
ineaiaa,
1 b all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, lVILLIAM P. HAS- TINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Henry, in the county of Henry and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in railway ties and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character produced of metal; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the rails will be effectively locked thereto and whereby such rails will be maintained against spreading.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved railway tie whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a tie constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, a part thereof being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the device as shown in Fig. 1, a coacting rail shown in section; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 2 and in the direction of the arrow.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the body of my improved tie of a predetermined configuration and dimension and herein shown as substantially rectangular in form having produced longitudinally thereof at its transverse center the upstanding web or flange 2 adapted to impart greater strength to the body, as is believed to be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art to which my present invention appertains. The body 1 and the flange 2 are further strengthened by the transverse webs or flanges 3-3 positioned substantially at the longitudinal center of Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 10, 1914.
Patented Apr. 14, 1914. Serial No. 811,404.
the body 1 and integrally produced with such body and the flange 2. At requisite points, the web or flange 2 is cut away, as
at 4, to permit the proper application of opposite end portions of each of the openings 4, are the elongated plates or lugs 6, having their inner longitudinal edges in spaced relation with the adjacent faces of the flange 2, whereby guide-ways or channels are afforded for the rail clamping or retaining members 7, each of such members being herein shown as an elongated plate having its inner end portion so formed as to snugly contact with and bear against the adjacent face of the rail 5 when positioned within an opening 4, as hereinbefore set forth. As is thought to be self-evident, these clamping members 7 eflectively prevent unseating or displacement of the rail and are readily and conveniently adjusted into or out of operative position relative to the rail by an endwise movement thereof within the guide-way. The upper edge or face of each of the clamping members 7 is disposed on an outward and downward bevel, as indicated at 8, relative to the flange 2, which bevel face 8 is adapted to contact with a correspondingly beveled under face of the elongated lateral projection or 111;; 9 formed on either side of the flange 2, ad jacent the upper marginal portion thereof and overlapping the guide-way or channel afforded by the plates or guides 7.
In order to maintain the clamps or retaining members 7 in operative position, or in engagement with a rail 5, suitable locking members 10 are directed through the members 8 and the flange 2, such members being herein shown as conventional bolts and nuts and in order that a convenient adjustment may be had of the clamps or retaining members 8, I produce therethrough at spaced intervals the longitudinally directed elongated slots 11 adapted to register with the openings 12 of the flange 2 and through which the bolts project.
The body 1 is further reinforced or strengthened by the longitudinally disposed extension 15 formed with the under surface thereof at substantially the transverse center of the body 1, such extension being preferably of materially greater thickness than the body 1 and of materially greater width than the flange 2 and being adapted to serve as an anchoring or retaining means for the tie proper.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a railway tie constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is par-- ticularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which a rail may be applied thereto and of the effectiveness with which such rail is maintained in'proper position and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the spirit and principles thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
Having thus fully described my invention what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A railway tie comprising an elongated body provided with an upstanding longitudinally directed flange having portions cut away to receive a rail, lugs produced on the upper face of the body to either side of the openings and in spaced relation to the flange to afford guide-ways, laterally projecting lugs formed on the upper marginal portions of the flange overlying the guide-ways afforded by the lugs on the body, clamping members mounted in the guideways on the body and in interlocking engagement with .the lugs of the flange, and means coacting with the flange and the clamps whereby such clamps may be held against movement.
2. A railway tie comprising an elongated body provided with an upstanding longitudinally directed flange having portions cut away to receive a rail, lugs produced on the upper face of the body to either side of the openings and in spaced relation to the flange to afford guideways, laterally projecting lugs formed on the upper marginal portions of the flange and having their under faces disposed on a downwardly directed bevel, clamping members mounted within the guide-ways on the body and having their upper faces beveled correspondingly with the under face of the lugs on the flange, whereby such clamping members may be in terlocked therewith, and means for holding the clamps against movement.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM F. HASTINGS.
