To all @011 0m it may concern Be it known that I, J OSE-PH J. SMITH, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic Dust-Removers for Carding-Engines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
This invention has reference to improvements in pneumatic dust removers for card ing engines and the invention relates particularly to the construction of the pneumatic mouthpiece and the means for supporting the same relative to the means for cleaning its brush.
The object of this invention is to so construct the mouth piece of a pneumatic dust remover having a brush adapted to be engaged with the stripper roll of a carding engine that the placing of said mouth piece on the carding engine may be facilitated and that, when removed from the carding engine, said mouth piece may be conveniently placed and positioned, on its carriage, relative to a cleaning brush.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description.
The invention consists in the novel construction of the pneumatic mouth piece.
The invention also consists in the combination with the novel mouth piece of the carriage having the stripping or cleaning brush and the means for positioning and supporting the mouth piece relative to such cleaning brush.
Figure 1 represents an end elevation of the pneumatic mouth piece mounted on its carriage and indicating, in dotted lines, the relative position of the mouth piece, when the same is placed on a carding engine of which a bracket for supporting the mouth piece is shown. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged end view of the mouth piece in relation to its supporting bracket of the carding engine to more clearly show the means for gaging the position of the mouth piece.
Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of a portion of the carriage of this dust remover, with the cleaner brush and the mouth piece shown in relation thereto, portions of the mouth piece being broken away to show its rotary brush. Fig. 4 represents an enlarged detail view of one of the brackets, on the carriage, for sustaining the cleaner brush and. for supporting and positioning the mouth piece relative thereto.

As shown in the drawings A. represents a portlon of a carding engine adjacent the roll or cylinder from which dust and some small portion of fiber is to be removed and provided at this point with brackets as B having open bearings as C having at their mouths diverging ends a 0.
The pneumatic dust remover and cleaner is mounted on the carriage 5, whereby it may be readily moved from one carding engine to another, and comprises the air suction conduit 6 having the flexible extension 7 which communicates with the collar 8 of the cylindrical wall 9 of the mouth piece having the handles 10, 10 and the segmental end pieces 11, 11, the straight edges 12, 12 of which define the opening between the ends 13, 13 of the cylindrical wall 9. On the end pieces 11, 11 are mounted the stud bolts 14, 14 on which are adjustably secured the plates 15, 15 having the bearing sleeves 16, 16 having the extensions 17, 17 segmental in cross section to fit between the diverging edges 0, 0 of the bearings C. Extendin through perforations in the ends 11, 11 and journaled in the bearing sleeves 16, 16 is the brush shaft 18 having at its end portions the band pulleys 19, 19 and, between the end pieces 11, 11, the brush 20.
Mounted on the carriage 5 is the frame 21 having upturned ends forming the brackets 22, 22 furnished at their upper ends with open bearings adapted to receive the sleeve 16, 16 of the mouth piece. These brackets 22, 22 have bolts 28, 23 by means of which are adjustably secured the steps 24, 24 having the sides 25 and 26 the edges of which are inclined and guide members as 27 which engage the vertical edges of the brackets 22. The sides 25 have the slots as 28 through which may be inserted the ends of the brush base 29 having the cleaner brush 30.
During the operation of removing dust from dolfer cylinder of the carding engine,
, by suction created in the conduit 6, brush 20 is caused to rotate audits bristles or wires thus take from the dofler cylinder considerable fiber which should preferably be removed from the brush 20 before operating on another carding engine. After the dust removing operation on one carding engine is completed operatives, by means of the handles 10, 10 lift the mouth piece from the brackets as C and place said mouth piece on the carriage 5 as shown in the drawings with its bearing sleeves 16,16 in the bearings of brackets 22, 22, in which operation the edges 12, 12 of the ends 11, 11 of the mouth piece engage the inclined edges of the step sides 25 and 26 and slide down said inclined edges until the periphery of brush 20 becomes slightly engaged with brush 30. At the same time the engagement of the mouth piece ends 11, 11 with the inclined edges of the steps prevent the rotation of the mouth piece wall 9 and the resultant injury by the edges 13, 18 thereof to the brush 30.
With the mouth piece in the position shown in Fig. 3 operatives rotate the brush 20 by means of the pulleys 19, 19 and the fiber carried thereby is thus caused to be delivered to the cleaner brush 30. If it becomes necessary to clean brush 30, this can be done by removing the same from the steps 2a through the slots 28, 28 without first removing the pneumatic mouth piece from the brackets 22, 22.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a pneumatic dust remover of the nature described, a mouth piece having at its ends bearing sleeves having segmental positioning members constructed to fit members carried by a carding machine, and a brush having a shaft journaled in said sleeves.
2. In a pneumatic dust remover of the nature described, a mouth piece having a cylindrical wall and a longitudinal opening in said wall, segmental ends on which said wall is mounted and bearing sleeves adjustably mounted on said end pieces and having positioning members, and a brush having a shaft journaled in said sleeves.
3. Ina pneumatic dust remover ofthe nature described, a mouth piece having a cylindrical wall. provided with a longitudinal opening therein, end walls for said cylindrical wall, end plates secured to said end walls provided with hearing sleeves having segmental positioning members, and a brush having a shaft journaled in said sleeves.

In a pneumatic dust remover of the nature described, a mouth piece having a cylindrical wall provided with a longitudinal opening therein, end walls for said cylindrical wall, adjustable end plates secured to said end walls provided with bearing sleeves having segmental positioning members, and a brush having a shaft journaled in said sleeves.
5. In a pneumatic dust remover of the nature described, a mouth piece having a cylindrical wall provided with a longitudinal opening therein, end walls for said cylindrical wall, said end walls provided with pins, slotted end plates adjustably mounted upon said pins and provided with bearing sleeves, said bearing sleeves having positioning members adapted to engage the bearings on amachine to be operated or to position said opening relatively thereto, and a brush having a shaft journaled in said sleeves.
