JOHN H. WA'ITERS, OF AUGUSTA, GEORGIA.
TRACK-SANDER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. VVATTERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Augusta, in the county of Richmond and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Track-Sander, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object to provide a track sander simple in construction, the sander having an air jet which is disposed to discharge the air against an inclined bottom member serving to direct the air together with the sand to an outlet disposed below the inclined bottom member. As there is practically no blasting against the sander casting proper there is little, if any, cutting action.
Other objects of my invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred form of my invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in both of the views in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my track sander, and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of Fig. 1.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that the inner portion 5 of the sand casing 6 is disposed in an opening 7 in a sand box 8, the shoulder 9 on the sand casing be ing disposed against the sand box 8 around its opening 7. This inner portion 5 of the sand casing 6 has an outer thread 10 with which meshes thenut 11, the nut 11 being turned home against the sand box 8 around its opening 7 to press the sand box 8 against the shoulder 9. The sand casing 6 has a bottom member 12 with an outer portion 13 disposed substantially horizontally and an inner portion 141 inclined upwardly from the portion 14 to the sand inlet 15 at the inner end of the sand casing 6 for receiving the sand from the sand box 8. The sand casing 6 has a threaded outlet 16 with which meshes the outlet pipe 17 Disposed in the top of the sand casing 6 there is a horizontal longitudinally disposed air passage 18 which has an outlet jet portion 19 of substantially the same area as the cross-sectional area of the air passage 18. This air outlet jet 19 serves to discharge the air blast against the inclined portion 14: of the bottom member 12 to draw through the sand inlet 15 sand from the sand box 8 so that the sand will be fed over the horizontal portion 13 of the bottom member 12 of the pipe 17. Communicating with the air passage 18 there is in the sand Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 22, 1913.
Patented Apr. "Z, 1914. Serial No. 796,612.
casing 6 a vertically extending air passage 20 of less area in cross-section than the air passage 18. Air from the air passage 20 will therefore be expanded in the air passage 18. There is a threaded openin 21 in the sand casing 6 which has the axis of the air passage 20 as its center, there being a bundle of wire cloth 22 at the bottom of this threaded opening and over the air passage 20 to serve as an air strainer. This wire cloth 22 is held down and in position by a sleeve 23 which has an outer thread meshing in the threaded opening 21 and an inner thread 2 1 with which meshes the outer thread 25 on the air inlet pipe 26.
There is a small air passage 19 in the casing 6 extending from the air passage 18 through the inner portion 5 of the casing, this passage 19 being provided for discharging a small jet of air into the sand box 8 to agitate the sand contained therein.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a track sander, a casing having an outlet and a bottom member inclined downwardly in the general direction of the outlet, there being a sand opening in a vertical wall of the casing at the top of the inclined bot tom member and a jet opening for directing the air against the inclined bottom member.
2. In a track sander, a casing having a bottom member, the inner portion of which is inclined down to the outer portion which is disposed substantially horizontally, the casing having an outlet below the horizontal plane of the outer portion of the bottom member, a sand inlet at the top of the inner portion of the bottom member and a jet opening for directing a jet of air against the inclined portion of the bottom member.
3. In a track sander, a casing having an outlet and a bottom member inclined downwardly in the general direction of the outlet, there being a sand inlet in the inner wall of the casing at the top of the inclined bot tom member, and an air passage leading in the general direction of the sand inlet with an opening for directing a jet of air against the inclined bottom member.
1. In a track sander, a casing having an outlet and a bottom member inclined in the general direction of the outlet, there being a sand inlet in the inner wall of the casing at the top of the inclined bottom member and a horizontal air passage leading in the gen eral direction of the sand inlet with an air opening for directing a jet of air against the inclined bottom member, there being a second air passage of less area in cross-section than the first air passage and leading to the first air passage and a strainer disposed at the inlet to the second air passage.
5. In a track sander, a casing having an outlet and a bottom member inclined downwardly in the general direction of the outlet, 7
Copies of this patent may be obtained for direction of the sand inlet with an opening for directing a et of air against the inclined 15 two subscribing Witnesses.
