H. S. WILLIAMS.
FLUME OR CONDUIT.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 10, 1913.

FLUME OR CONDUI-T.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented'Apr. 1914.
Applicationfiled April 10, 191s. Serial No. 760,1158.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HAROLD S. WrLLIAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Caldwell, in the county of Canyon and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flu'mesor Conduits, of which the following is a specification.
. My invention relates to improvements in .metal flumes and among the objects of my invention isthe provision of a metal flume specially designed for purposes of irrigation, cheapest possible construction, which will be readily assembled and taken apart when de-. sired, which will provide an absolute watertight joint or connection between the sections, which can be adjusted to suit con ditions, which will allow for the usual expansion and contraction, and which from every point of view will be thoroughly ,eflicient and practical.
With the attainment View, my invention consists of a metal flume composed of sections embodyin novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
In order that the construction in detail and the advantages of my invention may be fully understood, I have illustrated in the accompanying drawing a metal flume embodying my invention. v
Figure 1 represents a transverse sectional view of a metal, flume constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 repreof these objects in sents a vertical central longitudinal sectional view of the flume, and Fig. 3 represents" a perspective view on an enlarged scaleot the clamp or hinder forming a part of my mvention.
In the drawings: the letter A designates the longitudinal sills or'supports, and B designates the transverse supports or cross pieces mounted upon the longitudinal sills, audit will be understood that the flume may be supported above the ground or may be placed in a trench or ditch, as conditions lure. v
eflumeproper is composed of a series of metal sections C which havetheir overlapping ends I)' curved or bent in opposite directions to form the space E between said sections, and in said space is placed the packing or strip'F, and thus when-thesections are connected an interlockmg omt which will be of the simplest and formed, withthe rib or web is made, which-joint while permittingthe.
usual play of expansion and contraction,
provides an absolutely water-tight joint between the sections.
Passing around the sections at each" joint 15 the curved clamping rod G,ha'vihg its upper ends threaded at H, and receiving the securing nuts J. The upper ends pass through thecro'ss vpieces, and also through the openings K in the inward extensions or ears of the binders M. Said binders are provided with the depfindlilf portion M which serve to strengthen the depending portion M, WlllCh binders are also provided with the recess N, which receives the upper edges of the sections with the interposed packing,
and when the securing nuts are screwed home, the binders serve to secure the sections 1n proper positions with reference to the he rods, whlle to prevent improper movement of said binderstheir upper faces 0 are each provided with a rib P,which sinks into the surface of the underside of the cross pieces and serves .to retain the binders from lateral movement.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawing, it will be evident that my flume can be quickly assembled or taken apart, that it is capable of the proper adjustment to secure a watertight flume, and that the construction is the. embodiment of simplicity and cheapness.
I claim':
1. In a metal flume or conduit, the combination withthe longitudinal rails and the transverse strips supported thereon, of the binders having the lateral extension formed with an opening, the inward extension having a rib on its upper face to bite into the transverse strips and having the depending portion forming a' recess or seat, the flume sections having their ends overlapping and fitting within the said recesses 01E binders, and the tie rods passing around the ends of the flume and having threaded ends passing through the openings in the lateral" "portions of the binders,
on said threaded ends. v 2. In a metal flume or conduit, the comsaid and securing nuts bination with the longitudinal rails and the transverse strips supported thereon, of the binders having the lateral extension formed with an opening, theinwardextension having a rib'on its upper face toibite int the transverse strips and having the depending in the lateral portionsof the binders, and portion forming a recess or seat, the flume securing nuts on said threaded ends. 10 sections having their ends overlapping and In testimony whereof I aflixfmy signature fitting Within the said recesses of said binders in presence of two Witnesses.
" and bent to form a space at said ends, pack- HAROLD. S. WILLIAMS.
ings in said space, and the tie rods passing Witnesses: around the ends of the flume and having I .F. D, M MFQRD, threaded ends passing through the openings OPAL STEWART.
