Application led April 17, 1913. Serial Na7-61,712.
To all whom 'it'ma'g/ concern.'
Be it known that I, HERMAN LGREVE, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident.
of New York city, borough of Brooklyn, in
'the county of Kings and 4State of New York,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements -inMailing-lWrapper's, of which the following is a specification.
- This invention. relates .to mailing wrappers, particularly' such as Aare suitablev for mailing photographs, magazines, books or similar, articles which. mustvbe mailed f iat.
The principal object of .this `invention 1s Y: to. provide a mailing wrapper of this character having comparatively long iiaps whichv may be readily fastened with a minimum number of fastenersl withouts'agging at the middle or readily becoming disengaged.
j tion and the featuresof novelty will be parl is a development of Fig. 1, illustrating- A further object is to provide a wra per of this character in -which the flaps tfiem.- selves interlock to. mutually hold Ieach `other from disengagement. j.
' A still further obfect isv to lprovide a fastening means 'which permits the wrapper to be easily opened.
Still further objectsand advantages will appear more'fully from the detailed descripticularly pointed out in the claims.
'In the-accompanying drawing illustrating 'this invent-ion, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one formin vwhich 'the invention may be carried out, the wrapper being shown in position with the flaps locked inplace. .Fig 2 is a view similar to Fig.1 of a wrapper having deeper side walls and fastened with another form of Aclip or fastener. IFig. 3 is a view also similar to Fig. .1, illustrating a flat wrapperfor use in connection with thin articles such as drawings,'tracings, etc. Fig.
the formation of the entire wrapper out of a single piece of material, andalso the contour of the locking notches.
The invention consists essentially of a wrapper formed of comparatively stiff,
though somewhat flexible material, as paste board or the like, formed with overlapping' flaps. r1`he adjacent edges of these flaps" are formed with one or more registering, preferably Lc shaped .'notches, which, permit the flaps to meet atthese notches and to interlock, a'section of each flap being over and another sectionbeing under the mating flap l' when the two are interlocked.' Preferablyv the notches are cut of a suiiicient depth sov notches. A'suitable clip or fastener may be place.
Referring in detail to' Figs.. land 4, the
.continuation of the side walls,ven`dwalls15 and 16, and end flaps 17 and 18' also form- `ing a continuation of the end walls. r)The entire Awrapper may bev formed .of a single piece of comparatively stiff though somelike. The side flaps 13 and 14 which con'- ter is set upas" illustrated in Fig.. 1, are formed'at ,their adjacent edges with notches `into sections 21 and 22,and 23 and 24. lWhen the wrapper is set up as in Fig. 1, one of the sections of the'iiap Mns for .instance section 211 is made to overlap section22 of the made to underlie thesection 21 of flap 13,
ving them from relative lateral and longitudinal movement., j rlChe apices of the notches preferably are of sufficient depth so as. to
metal suitablyV attached to the 'aps as by having tongues 27 passing through slots in the flaps and turned over thereunder. These strips may then be turned over as shown -in Fig. 1, to hold-the flap sections down. As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the strips extend angular-ly with reference to the flaps, so as to ,more readily engage -the oblique edges of the notches. However, itv will be readily `seen that the stri-ps maybe disposed parallel to the flaps without departing from the spirit of my invention. However, by reason of the angular arrangement, the relative lonprevented.
In the form illustrated in Fig; 2, the side and end walls 12a and 16a are somewhat deeper than` in the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4. Also the notches lQaand 20a are somewhat steeper than in the other that t-he flaps just meet at theapices of the used for holdingv the `top sections down in4 wrapper consists of abottom 10, side walls 11 and 12, side iiaps 13 and 14 forming a what .flexible material' as paste board or the 70 stitute the top of the wrapper when the lat- 19 andl 20 to, divide'the. edges of the flaps,L
flap 13 and the `other section `23 of Hao-101 is l '80 thus interlocking the twofiaps and restrainjust meetwhen the wrapper is set up. With' gitudinal movement of the' flaps is further are preferably merely flat strips of sheet.
2, I preferably employ fasteners 25ajand26ai which; pass entirelyV throughv the kiap sections to securelyhold them in --place. y At the same time, the interlocking of the flapsv byy the notched:.construction,. prevents the,"
sagging lof the flaps v With'reference to; each other and also removes considerable-ofthe strain from the fasteners, preventing. the tearing of thesame from the material as so often happens in -ordinalry construetions-` In the form illustrated in' Fig. 3, the flaps lbandflt! having notches 19? andQO" and Figs.. l and 4. l I Iowever,z'tlie side and end fasteners band26bare of'lsubstanti'ally the s ame construction as the form illustrated in Walls are omitted as thistform. is. intended for use iii-connection With mailing thin, flat f articles as. drawings, A.tracings and the-like. "20j It Willthus'be Sleen that' I have provided a` mailing Wrapper suitable formailing articles flat 'and 'in which long flaps may be used with a' minimum number'of fasteners and atthe' salme time avoiding'the sagging of. the flaps withv reference to each other and eliminating. the possibility of' disengagei ment.' Also the flaps themselves interlock and thus .remove a portion of the strain from the fasteners, thereby assuring 'that the latter are notv accidentally torn from place as`so often happens in the ordinary mailing Wrappers. Moreovergthe.preferredform of Ifastener, (illustrated in' Figspl, 3,
and 4,- whichl is especially adapted for .this
Wrapper, allows the latter to be readily A- [opened for the purpose of' removing the-corr' tents. I
Having thus described my invention, I
l. A-wr'apper formed of stift' brous ina-- .A terial havinga bottom portion and meeting' flaps continuing from said -botto-m'portion,
said flaps being formed with 'registering notches which divide the edges-of the same into a plurality of sections, the sections lof 2.. A Wrapperv formedof stifffibrous ma? lhold the sa'me Hat Loazog vlterialyhaving 'a bottom portion and meetingv ilaps' continuing from said- -bottomj portion,

3. A .wrapper formedof'sti fibrous Inat'erial comprising a bottom'portio'n andlaps continuing from' said bottom portion, said 'flaps'being formed with V shaped notches,
'the apices of vvh-ich' are adapted to meet when the flaps jarein interengaging :relation, saidnotches dividing theedg'es of the flaps intofa' 'lurality of sections, the. sectionsof one gap alternately overlying and 'underlying' the "adjacent sections ofA lthev other tl'apjand -angularly disposed`. fasteners attached to the underlying flap sections and overlying sections at adaptedtoengage .the their inclined edges.' i
4. rapper formed of s tilf, brous Inaterial comprising a bottom'portion and "flaps continuing fromvvsaid bottom portion,- one pair oi"` oppositely disposed iaps being `formed-With `V shaped notches and over?` .lyingthe other liaps, the apices of the notches meeting when the aps are-in' 111-' ined edgesof the terengaging relation, said notches dividing the edgesof .the flaps' into a plurality of secing the adjacentsectionoffthe other apv and the other section 'of the rst flapundertions, one of the sections ofone lapoverl-ylying the adj acentsection of the second Hap, and angularly--disposed fastenersconsis'ting of fiat strips of metal attached'to the yu'nderlying lap sections adapted to be bent `95 over to engage the yoverlyingsections' at their vinclined'ed'ges.r v Signed at New 'York city, inthe county vof New York, -and State of New"York',t this.
