Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY N. FULTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadel hia, in the county of Philadelphia and S have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Photobromid Plate or Film Printing Easels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to an adjustable folding easel for photo-bromid, plate or film printing, enlarged or reduced, in respect to the negative, in one machine, without disorganizing the same in shifting from one size print to be made to another; and in such connection it relates to the constructive arrangement of such a machine, for the defined purposes.
The nature and scope of my present invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in Which- Figure 1, is'a perspective view.of a bromid or plate printing easel, in operativeposition, embodying the main features of my said invention. Fig. 2, is a similar view of the rear thereof. Fig.' 3, is a vertical central sectional view, showing the detail arrangement of the subdivided body and foldable adjustable back for said body having means to shift the body transversely of its supporting back and a pawl and ratchet device connected respectively, with the shifting means and back, for raising. and lowering said body, in connection with said back. Fig. 4, is a side elevational view of the machine in a folded condition, for conveniently handling, when not in use. Fig.5, is a sectional elevation of one of the recessed inserts ooved subdivided body of the machine, owing how said inserts are stapled therein: and Fig. 6, is an elevational view, in broken section, of one of the recessed strips or inserts of said body, showing the spring controlled normal position thereof, in grooves of said body.

The rider b, is provided with a tongued block bf, engaging grooved cross-bars b and b and which block is shiftable sidewise within said standards '1) and 6 The body b of the easel B, on the back is provided with a screw-bolt a extending through said block b, and on which is loosely mounted a stiff curved spring plate 0 and to the bolt is applied a am-nut c", for tightening the body of the easel to the supporting back (1?, in any shifted vertical or horizontal position thereof, as will be clearly understood from Fig. 2. By the above arrangement, the loosening of the jam-nut 0,, enables the easel body 6 to be quickly shifted into a transverse position to that it occupies as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and to be also readily locked by said nut, in such position. This easel body 6 is provided with a glass cover-plate b which is hinged to said body I) and at the top latched at b thereto, for example as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The face of the body 12 of the easel B, asshown in Fig. 1, is arranged with enlarged and reduced rectangular-shaped 0r block-like divisions b and between with grooves 79. These grooves are each fitted with recessed strips or inserts b, which by means of staples b, engaging the recesses of said inserts are extended through said body and fastened on the back of the same, for example, as shown in Fig. 5. In the bottom of the said grooves b, are secured curved leaf springs b, for holding said inserts in a vertical position and under spring tension above the face of said body I)", for example, as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, so that when the glass cover-plate b, is latched at b, to
printed and inserted in one of the said divisions of said body being disarranged in the act of closing said glass cover-plate against the said body for use of the same.
In each of the corners of the said divisions 6 in the face of said body, Fig. 1, are provided clips 6?, arranged above the surface of said divisions for engaging corners of a plate, sensitized sheet or film, for example,
as shown in Fig. 1. These corner-pieces b",
are fixtures of the several rectangularshaped divisions of said body 5 and are not connected with the said strips or inserts 6", hence not interfering with normal working of the inserts in the closing of the glass cover-plate against the body 6 of the said easel.
To focusthe negative in respect to a particular division of the body 6 of the easel, and from which is to be made either a print enlarged or reduced in respect to the size of said negative on a sheet, plate or film placed in a division b ,.the easel is simply shifted in the base-plate 0;, either back or forth. To center the subject of the negative, within one of the said divisions 6 of said body, it is necessary only to shift sidewise the block b, after loosening the jam-nut 0 and then to manually move the block b, in slidable connection with the rider 19 to the right or to the left.
To shift the bodyb from the base-plate a, in connection with the back or, or to lower the same in-the direction thereof, it is only necessary to lift by hand, the rider 6 to cause then the pawl and ratchet device 0, to operate to lock the said body in any given shifted position, so that the normal vertical as well as horizontal positions of the said easel may be modified quickly for deriving true centering of the subject of the negative in respect to the sensitized sheet, film or plate to receive the print thereof enlarged or reduced with respect to the size of the negative placed in the path of the said photo-printing easel, but not shown.
When the easel has served its purpose it may be quicklycaused to assume a folded condition, as illustrated in Fig. 4, by simply disengaging the latch-bolt a of the slidable frame (L in the base-plate a, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 4, for the convenient carriage orstorage of the said machine.
Having thus described the nature and obnected with said body nuance? jects of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a foldable machine of the character described, a body incased in a frame, said body having a series of difi'erent size subdivisions bounded by spring controlled strip inserts, said frame provided with a glass cover-plate and means for both vertical and horizontal adjustment of said body and frame.
2. Ir a foldable machine of the character describ. l. a glass incased body adjustable in difi'erent direct-ions said body divided into subdivisions, bounded by spring controlled strip inserts, means to permit of manually elevating or lowering said body and lockin the same and means to shift sidewisesaid body.
3. In a foldable machine of the" character described, a body having a series of different size subdivisions with grooves bounding said sub-divisions, inserts operatively held .to permit of adjustments of said body in respect thereto.

In a foldable machine of the character described, an incased body having a series'of difi'erent size subdivisions with grooves bounding said sub-divisions, recessed stripinserts held in said grooves and springs conand bearing against an edge of said strip-inserts, a shiftable back to which said body is pivotally supported and means for locking said body in anykshifted position, in connection with said bac 5. In a foldable machine of the character described, a grooved base-plate, a tongued frame slidable in said plate, a back provided with standards, a glass incased body having a series of diflerent size grooved sub-divisions, spring controlled strip inserts held in the grooves of said sub-divisions and extending above the face of said body, means connected with said back to permit of the vertical and horizontal shifting of said body and means to lock said body, in connection with said back.
