Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 17, 1914.
Application filed December 18, 1912. Serial No. 737,477.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. STANBERY,
Zionville, in the county of Watauga and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows, and it has particular reference to that class which are known as reversible or hillside plows.
The invention has for its object to produce a simple and efficient construction under which a beam is provided with a standard consisting of a shaft on which a plate is mounted for rotation, said plate carrying right and left hand plows, means being pro vided for locking the beam in position with respect to the plow carrying plate.
A further object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction of the locking means and other details of the device.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a hillside plow constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, with dotted lines showing the beam in the act of being swung from one position to another. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation. Fig. 4; is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 44 in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view taken on the line 5-5 in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a sectional detail view taken on the line 6-6 in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a perspective detail view of the locking device and related parts. Fig. 8 is a sectional detail view on the line 88 in Fig. 1.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The invention has been illustrated in connection with the wooden plow beam 1 which is provided with a standard consisting of a shaft 2 which extends therethrough at a suitable angle, the upper and lower ends of said standard or shaft being reinforced by bearing plates 3 and 4;. These bearing plates which consist of suitable castings are provided on the faces that engage the faces of the plow beam with lugs or projections 5 for the reception of which suitable recesses or sockets 6 are formed in the plow beam to prevent lateral displacement of the bearing plates. The upper bearing plate 3 serves for the attachment of the lower ends of the handles 7 which are supported by means of braces 8.
Supported for rotation on the standard or shaft 2 is a landside member consisting of a plate 9 having ground engaging edges 10 formed ata suitable angle to one another. The plate 9 is provided at the front ends of the respective edges with seats or frogs 11 on which plow shares and points of ordinary construction, right and left hand, may be mounted and secured detachably by means of fastening members, such as ordinary bolts. The top edge of the plate 9 is provided with projections forming stops 12.
The lower bearing plate 1 is provided with rearwardly extending arms 13 between which is supported a lever 14 that extends upwardly through a slot 15 in the rear end of the beam 1. The rear end of the beam is also recessed on its underside, as shown at 16, and on the underside of the beam is secured a transverse plate 17 forming a support to limit the downward movement of the lever 14:, and serving also to engage the stops 12 at the top edge of the landside plate 9. The lever 14 carries a latching device consisting of a pin or shaft 18 extending transversely therethrough and carrying conical points 19, each having an annular groove 20. The lever 14; which is provided with an arm or handle 21 is actuated in a downward direction by means of a spring 2:2.
In the operation of this device, when one of the ground engaging edges 10 of the landside plate 9 is in an approximately horizontal ground engaging position, the other edge 10 will extend upwardly and rearwardly, as shown. When the landside plate is in this position and the beam 1 extends in a forward direction, the top edge of the landside plate will be engaged by the annular groove 20 of one of the conical points 19 of the latch device, and one of the stops 12 will engage the forward edge of the transverse plate 17, thereby relieving undue strain on the shaft 2 which constitutes the standard. WVhen the end of the furrow has been'reached, the operator by manipulating the lever 1% may disengage the top edge of the landside plate from the annular groove in the cone engaged thereby, and the beam may now be swung around, the landside plate being simultaneously tilted on the heel at the intersection of the two ground engaging edges 10, thereby changing the plow from right to left, or vice versa. hen the beam has swung the required distance, the latch device will automatically engage the top edge of the landside plate, thereby locking the latter with respect to the beam, as will be readily understood. 7
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is I 1. In a hillside plow, a beam, a shaft connected therewith, said shaft being inclined downwardly and rearwardly to constitute a standard, a landside plate supported for rotation on said standard, a spring actuated lever fulcrumed upon the beam, a stem extending transversely through said lever, and conical members mounted terminally on the stem and having annular grooves adapted to engage the top edge of the landside.
2. In a hillside plow, a beam having a slot at its rear end and provided also with a recess at the rear end and in the underside thereof, a downwardly and rearwardly inclined shaft connected with the beam and constituting a standard, a landside plate supported for rotation on the standard, a spring actuated lever fulcrumed adjacent to the standard and extending upwardly Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
through the slot, a portion of said lever being accommodated in the recess of the beam, a stem extending transversely through the part of the lever within the recess, and cones mounted on the ends of the stem and having annular grooves adapted to engage the top edge of the beam.
3. In a hillside plow, a beam, bearing members 011 the upper and undersides of the beam, the bearing member on the underside having rearwardly extending arms and the beam being provided with a vertical slot and with a transverse recess at the rear end thereof, an inclined shaft extending through the beam and the bearing members and constituting a standard, a landside plate supported for rotation on the standard, a lever pivoted between the rearwardly extending arms of the bearing member on the underside of the beam, said lever extending up wardly through the slot and having a portion accommodated within the recess, a stem extending transversely through the lever and having annular-1y grooved conical members adapted to engage the top edge of the landside plate, a transverse plate on the underside of the beam, stop members on the top edge of the landside plate adapted to engage said plate, and handles connected with the bearing member on the upper side of the beam.
In testimony whereof Iaflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
