IRONNG-BOARD.
LOEMLOGQ.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. it), 1914.
Application filed March 13, 1913. Serial No. 754,032.
To all whom t may concern y.'
Be it known that I, RALEIGH Jones, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State oil' Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing- Boards; and .l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in ironing boards, and more particularly to that type of ironingboard so constructed that it can be readily clamped to the edge of a table or the like by a hinged support.
A. further object of the invention is to produce a device of this character which is simple in construction, and durable and etlicient in operation.
A further object of the invention is to combine therewith a pivoted sleeve board and fixed iron holder.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device showing the same clamped to a table. Fig. 2 is a loottom plan view showing the board in its folded position. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3*@ o1 Fig. 2. Fig. d is a top plan view ol a portion of the board, showing the iron holder. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the member 6. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the pivotal end portion of the sleeve board 5.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the ironing board having a slot 2 formed in one of its ends. A supporting member 3 is hinged to the board 1 having its head l projected slightly beyond the opening 2, said head being adapted to coact with the portion of the board to be applied to the edge of a table or the like. Pivoted at 13 to the under side of the board 1 is a sleeve board 5. Rigidly connected to the under side of the board 1 is an angular member G having integral spacing lugs 7 at its ends which are secured to the board by screws 8. By providing the angular member with the end lugs 7 a suilicient space is provided between the board and said member to allow the sleeve board to swing freely.
Carried by one part ot' the angular men ber is a spring catch, consisting ot an exleriorly threaded barrel 9 and a sliding spring pressed bolt 11, havingI a suitable hand knob 12 lo withdraw the bolt 11 from engagement with the opening 13 formed in the under side ot' the sleeve'board 5. The screw threaded exterior of the barrel 9 is adapted to be screwed into an interiorly threaded opening' :lormed in the angular member G.
The sleeve board 5 is provided with a shoulder 141e near its pivoted end, said shoulder beingI adapted to rest against one of the lugs 7, when said sleeve board is in its folded or inoperative position, and will be securely held in this position, and out of the way when the bolt 11 of the spring catch engages in the outer opening 13.
When the sleeve board is desired for use, it is swung on its pivot until the inner most of the openings 13 receives the end of the spring` pressed bolt 11.
l't will be noted that the pivotal point of the board 5 is arranged slightly beyond the inner edge ol one part o'l.: the angular keeper, thereby allowing a portion of the sleeve board 5, beyond the pivotal point, to rest upon one portion ol.g the angular keeper, to support the saine when in use.
To the head 4loili the supporting member 3 is suitably secured a metallic iron holder 15, said iron holder being formed with side flanges 1G, said flanges being curved toward cach other, to provide a stop 'for the nose of an iron, when the saine is placed upon the holder.
In use, the ironing board is securely clamped to the edge of a table or the like, and when it is desired to iron fine material such as lace or linen, it is only necessary that the springpressed bolt be withdrawn from engagement with the sleeve board, and the saine swung around to its operative position, and the bolt engaged therewith, to securely lock the same. When desired t0 pack or store the device, it is only necessary that the operation be reversed, when the board will assume a compact and easily handled condition.
l/Vha t is claimed is:
The combination with an ironing board, of an L-shaped member secured to the under side of the board, said member having spacing lugs at its extremities for spacing the member from the board, a sleeve board pivthe shorter leg of the lI-shaped member t0 l0 limit the invvard movement of the sleeve board.
In testimony whereof, I aix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
RALTJlGI- JONES.
oted to the board at a point Within the inner angle of the L-shaped member, the sleeve board having a series of recesses in its under face at equidistant points from the pivot of said sleeve board, a spring pressed lookn ing plunger carried by the longer leg of the L -shaped member for engagement in the sleeve board openings, said sleeve board having a notch for the reception of the lug of Witnesses JAMES DUNN, l H.
