BUCKLE.
lie it known that I, MILTON l). ltl'icsnnonn, a citizen ol the United States, residing` at l'i'est lliven, in the county of New lslaven and `tt-ate ot Connecticut, have invented a new and use'tul Improvement in Buckles; and l do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accoinpanying` drawings and the characters ot reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and eX- act description ot the saine, and which said drawings constitute part oit this application, and represent, in-
l `ijrure l a top or plan Aview oit a buckle constructed in :uzcordancc with my invention. Fia'. 2 an underside view ot the saine. Fig. a side view. Fin'. 1l a longitudinal sectional view showing the clamping-piece in the retired position. Fin'. 5 a similar view showing,- the clan'iping-piece engaged with the strap. ltigr. (S a plan view ot the clamping-piece, detached. Fig'. 7 a sectional view oit a moditicd torni ot back-plate.
This invention relates to an imin'ovenicnt in buckles, and while adapted for various purposes, it particularly designed for use as a belt buckle, and to that class ot belt buckles which comprise a plate, a` housing', and a sliding` clampingzypiece `within the housing.
rlhe object ot this invention to 'form the sliding' piece with a spring), finger which will hear upon the plate or bottom ot the chamber and so as to adapt the buckle or use with straps oi varying' thicknesses; and the invention consists Ain certain details ct construction and combinations oit parts as will be hereiuattcr described and particula rly recited in the claims.
ln :ari-ying; out my invention, I 'form the buckle from a plate Q formed near its rear end with a cent 'al clearance space or opening' fl, and preferably and as herein shown. the -forward edge oit the opening: is turned down forming' a lip 4t. Secured to the plate a housing' 5 formed on opposite sides with slots G through which project tingen-pieces i' 'formed atopposite sides ol clamp 8 the edges 9, l0, ott which project toward the upper wall ott the housing. The vforward edge ot this clamping' member is Ytoi-ined with a spring-inger ll which is turned toward the plate and its rear end Specification of Letters Patent.
bowed upward so as to have a bearing Patented Mar. 10, 1914.
against the bottom ot the clamping-member. The width ot this spi'ingr-ing'cr corresponds substantially to the width ci the opening;- 3 Formed in the plate so that when the slide is moved rearward this spring-finger will drop into the said opening` so as to allow the gripping edges S), 10, to be treed from the strap 1Q. When the slide is moved iorward, the spring` linger engages with the lip 4t which tends to litt the clampingpiece, and as the clamping-piece 'is drawn forward it is crowded into engagement with the strap inserted through the housing. The fixed end 155 ot the strap is connected with the plate in any desired manner, such connection forming' no part ot the present invention.
instead oit cutting,v away the metal to form thc clearance space 3, the metal may be struck outward to itorm a clearance space or pocket l 1l: as indicated in Fin'. 7.
W hen the strap is inserted into the housing, the clampinfwpiece is moved forward by means olf the hngenpiece 7 and the edges t). ll), bite into the inner :face of the strap clamping' the strap against the inner wall ot the housing, and any strain upon the strap will tend to draw thc clamping-piece toi-ward and crowd it into still closer en- `largement with the strap, the spring-finger 1,1 bearing' against the inner 'face of the plate. will yield so that straps oit varying' thickness may be held. To release the strap it is only necessary lto move the clamping-piece rearward so that the spring-finger may drop into the clearance space or openin;Y in the plate, thus lgiving' clearance above the clamping-piece for the withdrawal of the strap.
I claim il. A. buckle comprising' a plate formed with a clearance space, a housing' secured to said plate, said housing` 'formed on opposite sides with slots, a clamping-piece within said housing and formed with fingerpieces projecting' outward through said slots, said clan1pingpiecc provided with a springiinn'er adapted to bear upon the said plate and to enter the clearancespace therein.
2. A buckle comprising;` a plate 'formed with a clearance opening' near its rear end, a housing' secured to said plate and provided on opposite sides with slots, a clamping-piece within said housing and provided with nge'r-peces extendngoutward through In testimony whereof, I have signed this said slots, said clamping-piece provlded at speclfcatlon 1n the presence of tWo subopposlte edges Wlth grlpplng paws, and Wlth scrlhlng Wltnesses.A
