APPARATUS FOR DISPENSING OONGEALED 0R SOLID SUBSTANCES.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 8, 1910.
1,089,683, Patented Mar. 10, 1914 Wrmesszs INYEN'TOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER STAPLER, OF CHARLOTTENBURG, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO THE FIRM OF OJA .AKTIEN'GESELLSCHAFT, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 10, 1914.
' Application filed November 8, 1910. Serial No. 591,254.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER STAPLER, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Charlottenburg, in the Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Dispensing Congealed or Solid Substances; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto'make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in an apparatus or holder in the form of a watch charm for dispensing congealed or solid substances, such as blocks of perfumes, fats, ointments, andthe like, which areto be applied to a surface, such for example as the skin of a person, a fabric, etc. And the object of the improvements is to provide an apparatus or holder which. is convenient and economical in use, and which when out of use is always closed and ready foruse;
With this and other objects in view my improved apparatus or holder consists of a receptacle of any suitable form and a shiftable closing and dispensing body or bodies which by being shifted is adapted to present varying parts of its surface to the inner side of the receptacle and in contact with the substance, and to the outside, so that the substance adhering to the body is applied to the skin or fabric to be treated. In the preferred construction, the closing and dispensing body consists-of a rotary body which in any position closes the receptacle.
For the purpose of explaining the invention-an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawing in which a longitudinal section of the apparatus in shown in Figure 1 and a modification in Fig. 2.
Referring to the example illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing my improved dispensing apparatus consists of a single receptacle a of any suitable form which is adapted to receive the congealed or solid substance to be applied to the skin or to a fabric or the like. Inthe example shown the said substance consists of a congealed or solid mass in the form of a smallblock b. At one end, the receptacle is closed by a shiftable dispensing body 0 of glass or other suitable material, which is so disposed within the mouth of the receptacle that it can not fall out of the same while it is easily shiftable therein. In the example shown in which the closing and dispensing body is in the form of a sphere the mouth is of spherical form, and its outer diameter is smaller than that of the sphere. At its rear end the receptacle is closed by a screw plug 0 which may be provided with a ring or the like by means of which the apparatus can conveniently be attached as a watch charm to a watch chain or the like. Within the receptacle, and between the screw plug 6 and the substance .7) a spring d is located by means of which the substance 2) is held in contact with the rotary body a. In case the substance is not sufiicient'ly congealed or solid to withstand the pressure of the spring a plunger may be interposed between the latter and the substance. After removing the plug 6 fro-1n the receptacle the substance contained thcrein can easily be removed or substituted by a substance of the same or a different kind.
\Vhen using the apparatus the rotary body 0 is passed over the object. to be treated therewith so that it is turned by friction, an the inner portion of the rotary body is brought to the outside and the substance Kl- I wish it to be understood, that my invention is not limited to the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, and that various changes may be made therein Without departing from the gist of my invention. For example the form of the shiftable body a may be different from that shown. A suitable modification consists in making the same of cylindrical form. Also the means for holding the rotary body on the receptacle may be substituted by other means. For example the rotary body, whether spherical or cylindrical, Or of another form, may be mounted on pivots secured to the receptacle a or to the rotary body, or on a pivot pin which extends en- 'tirely through a bore of the said rota y body as shown in Fig. 2. Also the means for forcing the substance I) in contact with the rotary body may be made in a different form. For example the substance may be forced in contact with the rotary body by screwing a plug similar to the plug 6 into the receptacle. And in some cases it may entirely be dispensed with. It should also be understood, that instead of a single rotary body a a plurality thereof might be used as shown in Fig. 2. As a closing and dispensing element I prefer to use a sphere, because thereby the mouth of the receptacle is always closed, and-the latter can be moved over the surface to be treated in any direci tion. I
I claim herein as my invention:
1. In an apparatus for applying congealed or solid substances such as blocks of perfumes, ointments, fats, and the like to a surface, the combination with a receptacle for said substance having, a mouth and a seat bounding the same and forming a hollow spherical zone, of a ball of non-corrosive material on said seat arranged to yieldingly close said mouth and adapted to contact wit the substance within sald receptacle and to be passed over said surface and to be rotated thereby and when rotated to present varying side of the receptacle and to the outside, and means operative in any position of the receptacle to press said substance in contact with said ball.
2. In an apparatus for applying congealed or solid substances such as blocks of perfumes, ointments, fats, and the like to a surface, the combination with a receptacle for said substance having a mouth and a seat bounding thesame and forming a hollow spherical zone, of a ball of non-corrosive material on said seat arranged to yieldingly close said vmouth and adapted to contact with the substance within said receptacle portions of its surface to the inner and to be passed over said surface and to be rotated thereby and when rotated to present varying portions of its surface to the inner side of the receptacle and to the outside, and a spring within said receptacle arranged for engagement with the substance within the receptacle and adapted to force the same in contact with said ball and said ball in contact with'its seat.
3. In an apparatus for applying congealed or solid substances such as blocks of perfumes, ointments, fats, and the like to a sur face, the combination with a receptacle for said substance having a mouth and a seat bounding the same and forming a hollow spherical zone, of a ball of non-corrosive material on said seat arranged to yieldingly close said mouth and adapted to contact with the substance within said receptacle and to be passed over said surface and to be rotated thereby and when rotated to present varyin portions of its surface to the inner side of the receptacle and to the outside, means operative in any position of the receptacle to press said substance in contact with said ball and suspending means connected with said receptacle.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDER STAPLER.
