VAULT-LIGHT CONSTRUCTION.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER CHAMB- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vault-Lights Construction, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to paving, and more particularly to that class of paving known as vault lights, and has for an object to provide a simple, cheap and effective vault light construction.
The invention embodies, among other features, the provision of a vault light body adapted to be arranged and locked within a tubular, square or any other shaped casing and which is suitably embedded in a concrete or other base and whereby, when a series of such members are employed, a strong, durable and efficient vault light construction will be provided.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all. the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tubular casing; Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the vault light member arranged within the casing; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the vault light construction; Fig. i is a perspective view of a modified form of casing, which may be circular, square or any other shape; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of the vault light construction using the casing shown in Fig. 4:.
Referring more particularly to the views, use is made of a tubular casing 10 preferably made of a single piece of metal to provide an upper tubular section 11 and a lower tubular section 12, with an intermediate enlarged annular flange 13 formed between the upper and lower sections 11 and 12, as shown, the upper section 11 being provided with a series of vertical channels l l formed by striking portions of the side Wall of the upper section outwardly, as shown, with the lower ends of the channels terminating in the annular flange 13.

ranged thereon so that when the body is inserted in the upper section 11 of the casing 10, the ears will register with and lie in the channel 14, thus permitting of readily inserting the body 15 in the upper section 11 and lowering the body therein until the lugs 17 are received in an annular recess 18 formed by the annular flange 13 and which constitutes a seat 19 for the body 15, after which the body is rotated to move the lugs 17 out of alinement with the channels 14, thus locking the body within the casing 10, it being understood that the casing 10 has been previously embedded in a suitable base 20 of concrete or the like, as shown in Fig. Concrete or other plastic material 21 is now poured into the space between the casing 10 and body 15, thus, when the material becomes hard, presenting an absolutely rigid structure and wherein, when a series of the casings 10 and bodies 15 are arranged, as mentioned, in the base 20, an eiiicient and substantial vault light construction will be provided.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I disclose a modified form of my device, and in which use is made of a casing 22 consisting of an upper tubular section 23 and a lower tubular section 2st, the lower tubular section 24lbeing of smaller diameter than the upper section 23 to provide a circular seat 25. A vault light body 26 is adapted for insertion in the casing 22, with the said body reposing upon the seat 25 as shown in Fig. 5, the mentioned casing 22 having been previously embedded in a base 27. The space between the casing 22 and body 26 is now filled with concrete or other plastic material 28, thus providing a rigid vault light construction.
From the foregoing description it will therefore be seen that the vault light construction disclosed herein embodies few and simple parts which can be readily assembled and which, when bound together by con crete or other plastic material provide a firm and substantial structure or paving constituting vault lights.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a vault light construction, the combination with a casing adapted to be supported on a base and consisting of an upper section and lower reduced section, an annular flange between the sections and providing an annular recess and a seat, vertical channels in the upper section, a vault light body for insertion in the said casing, lugs on the vault light body and adapted to register with the said channels when the said boc y is inserted in the casing the said vault light body being adapted to be rotated on the casing when the lugs are received in the re cess formed by the said annular flange, to move the lugs out of alineinent with the channels in the upper section and a plastic material adapted to be poured between the said casing and the said body after the body has been inserted in the casing to rigidly secure the body in the said casing. 2. In a vault light construction, the combination with a casing having vertical channels and a recess in which the vertical channels terminate, of a Vault light body for insertion in the casing, and lugs on the vault light body and adapted to aline with the channels when the vault light body is inserted in the casing, the said vault light body being adapted to be rotated after insertion in the casing and when the said lugs are received in the said recess, to move the lugs out of alinenient with the channel and lock the said body in the said casing.
