To all whom it may concern l Be it known that I, GEORGE HILL JoNns, l of Bala, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvenient in Locomotive Longitudinal Shafts, whereof the following is a specification, refl erence being had to the accompanying drawings.
This application is a division of my application Serial No. 640,421, filed July 25, 1911, for Letters Patent of the United States for an improvement in railway cars.
My invention relates to a self-propelled railway car, and, particularly to means whereby two axles each having two flanged supporting wheels rigidly connected therewith and spaced to fit a railway track may be positively driven simultaneously in connection with a motor carried by the car: said means including a counter shaft formed in sections which are relatively movable out of alinement and longitudinally so that said shaft may be operated freely regardless of variation in the alinenient of its bearings incident to the strains to which the car is subjected.
My invention includes the various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified.
In the drawings :--Figure I is a plan view of a car conveniently embodying my improvement. Fig. II is a vertical sectional view, taken on the line II, II in Fig. I. Fig, III is a fragmentary vertical sectional view, on a larger scale, taken on the line III1 III in Fig. I.
In said figures; the tracks 1 are adapted to be traversed by the car wheels 2 and 3 respectively rigidly connected with the front axle 4 and the rear axle 5 respectively journaled in the bearings 6 and 7 connected by the reach rods 8, and the springs 9 and 10 with the truck frame 11; said rods bi 'i pivoted together, on the studs 12 on said frame, as shown in Fig. I. Said axles 4 and 5 are respectively provided with bevel gears 1S and 14 engaging the bevel gears 15 and 1G connected by the counter shaft coinprising the three sections 18, 19 and 2O shown in Fig. III, whereby, said axles 4 and 5 may be simultaneously rotated in either direction so as to be positively driven in either direction by operative connection with the motor 21 as hereinafter described. Said front axle 4 is provided with the gear casing 22 inclosing said gears 13 and 15 and having bearings 23, 24 and 25 for the shaft section 18 to which said gear 15 is rigidly connected and which as shown in Fig. III has at its rear end the clutch head 2G with the quadrangular flange 27 engaging the quadrangular socket 2S in the clutch head 29 on said shaft section 19 having the bearing 30 in the yoke 31 which is pivotally connected by the studs 32 with said gear casing 22 and carries the shaft cover tube 34 having at its opposite end the bearing 35 for said shaft 19 and the spherical flange 3G by which said cover tube 34 is supported in the spherical bearing 37 which is rigidly connected with said frame 11 as shown in Fig. III. Said shaft 19 has at its rear end the clutch head 39 with the quadrangular flange 40 engaging the quadrangular socket 41 in the clutch head 42 on said shaft section 20 having` the bearing 43 in the head 44 of the shaft cover tube 45 having the spherical flange 46 fitted in said frame bearing 37. Said shaft tube 45 has at its rear end the yoke 4S which is pivotally connected by the studs 49 with the gear casing 50 on the rear axle 5 inclosing said gears 14 and 16; said shaft section 2O being rigidly connected with the latter. It is to he understood that the several joints above dcscribed between the shaft sections 1S, 19 and 20 and the casing members in which they are journaled permit such distortion thereof as is incident to the operation of the car. without interfering with the freedom of rotation of said shaft sections which is essential to the maximum efficiency of the driving connection. Said rear axle 5 has the double faced crown clutch ring 52 keyed thereon l'ietwcen the opposed bevel clutch gears ,53 and 54 shown in Figs. I and II. Said gears and are respectively provided with the thrust bearings 5G and 57 in the gear casing 59 having the spring roller bearings G0 for said axle 5 and having the bearing G1 for the rock shaft 63 which is provided at its outer end with the oi'ierating level. 64 and has at its inner end the yoke operatively engaging said clutch ring 52 so that the latter may be shifted to connect said axle 5 with either of said gears 53 and 54 in accordance with the position of said clutch lever G4. Said gears 53 and 54 are both engaged with the driving gear G7 on the shaft 68 which turns in the direction of 11o L to the arrow marked thereon in Fig. l; so that when said axle 5 is operatively connected by said clutch 52 with the gear 53 the car is driven forward, and, when said axle 5 is connected with said gear 54 the car is driven backward. :Said shaft G8 is operatively connected with the crank shaft 7() of the internal combustion motor 2l by the variable speed gearing in the casing TQ.
l do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction or arrangement herein set forth, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim :4
l. .ln a railway car, the combination with two axles, each having two flanged supporting wheels rigidly connected therewith, spaced to fit a railway track; of gearing connecting said axles, arranged to drive them sinniltaneously, including bevel gears on the respective axles and a counter shaft formed in three sections which are relatively movable longitudinally; bevel gears on the respectively opposite cud sections engaging said axle gears; the intermediate section having at one cnd a clutch head with a quadrangular flange and at the other end a quadrangular socket adapted to fit complementary sockets and heads respectively carried by the other sections; gear casings carried by the respective axles inclosing said gears and having bearings for the end shaftsections;yokes pivotally connected with said gear casings, by vertically axially alined studs, and respectively carrying shaft cover tubes inelosing said intermediate shaft sections; inter-engaged spherical flanges on the adjacent ends of said shaft cover tubes; a spherical bearing, stationary with respect said car, supporting said spherical flanges; a motor; and, means whereby said motor may be connected to propel said car in either direction, including two opposed bevel gears concentric with one of said axles and simultaneously rotatable in opposite directions, independently thereof, and a clutch concentric with said axle arranged to alternately connect said bevel gears therewith.
2. In a railway car, the combination with two axles, each having two flanged supporting wheels rigidly connected therewith, spaced to fit a railway track; of gearing connecting said axles, arranged to drive them simultaneously, including bevel gears on the respective axles and a counter shaft formed in sections which are relatively movable longitudinally; bevel gears on the respectively opposite end sections engaging lsaid axle gears; an intermediate section havting at one end a clutch head with a quadrangular flange and at the other end a quadangular socket adapted to fit complementary sockets and heads respectively carried by the other sections; gear casings carried by the respective axles inclosing said gears and having bearings for the end shaft sections; yokcs pivotally connected with said gear casings, by vertically axially alined studs, and respectively carrying shaft cover tubes inclosing said intermediate shaft section; inter-engaged spherical flanges on the adjacent ends of said shaft cover tubes; a spherical bearing, stationary with respect to said car, supporting said spherical flanges; a motor; and, means whereby said motor may be connected to propel said car in either direction, including two opposed bevel gears concentric with one of said axles and simultaneously rotatable in opposite directions, independently thereof, and a clutch concentric with said axle arranged to alternately connect said bevel gears therewith.

In a railway car, the combination with two axles, each having two flanged supporting wheels rigidly connected therewith, spaced to fit a railway track; of gearing connecting said axles, arranged to drive them simultaneously, including bevel gears on the respective axles and a counter shaft formed in sections which are relatively movable longitudinally; bevel gears on the respectively opposite end sections engaging said axle gears; gear casings carried by the respective axles inclosing said gears and having bearings for the end shaft sections; yokes pivotally connected with said gear casings, by vertically axially alined studs, and respectively carrying shaft cover tubes inclosing said intermediate shaft section; inter-engaged spherical flanges on the adjacent ends of said shaft cover tubes; a spherical bearing` stationary with respect to said car, supporting said spherical flanges; a motor; and, means whereby said motor may be connected to propel said car in either direction, including two opposed bevel gears concentric with one of said axles and simultaneously rotatable in opposite directions, independently thereof, and a clutch concentric with said, axle arranged to alternately connect said bevel gears therewith.

In a railway car, the combination with two axles, each having two flanged supporting wheels rigidly connected therewith, spaced to fit a railway track; of gearingconnecting said axles, arranged to drive them simultaneously, including bevel fears on the respective axles and a counter shaft formed in sections which are relatively movable longitudinally; bevel gears on the respectively opposite end sections engaging said axle gears; an intermet'linte section having at one end a clutch head with a quadrangular flange and at the other end a quadrangular socket adapted to fit complementary sockets and heads respectively carried by the other sections; gear casings carried by the respective axles inclosing said gears and having bearings for the end shaft sections; yokes pivotally connected with said gear casings, by vertically axially alined studs, and respectively carrying shaft cover tubes inclosing said intermediate shaft section; inter-engaged spherical flanges on the adjacent ends of said shaft cover tubes; a spherical bearing, stationary with respect to said ear, supporting said spherical flanges; a motor; and, means whereby said motor may be connected to propel said car in either direction.

In a railway ear, the combination with two axles, cach having two flanged supporting wheels rigidly. connected therewith, spaced to fit a railway track; of gearing connecting said axles, arranged to drive them shnultaneously including bevel gears on the respect-ive axles and a counter shaft formed in sections which are relatively movable longitudinally; bevel gears on the respectively opposite end sections engaging said axle gears; gear casings carried by the respective axles inclosing said gears and having bearings for the end shaft sections; yokes pivotall` connected with said gear casings, by vertically axially alined studs, and respectively carrying shaft cover tubes inclosing said intermediate shaft section; inter-engaged spherical flanges on the adjacent ends of lsaid shaft cover tubes; u lsphere ical bearing, stationary with respect to said cnr, supporting said spherical flanges; a motor; und, means whereby said motor may be connected to propel said car in either direction.
