FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 25, 1913.
Patented Feb. 24, 1914.
Serial No. 750,565.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL D. WELSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Plymouth, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fence posts and particularly to those constructed of metal.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a metallic fence post which includes means for securing fence wires there to and which will be simple in construction, efiicient in use and cheap to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail. reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fence post constructed in accordance with the invention and showing a plurality of fence wires secured thereby; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the fence post; Fig. 3, a transverse section of the fence post on an enlarged scale, and Fig. 1, a transverse section of the body member of the fence post showing same out longitudinal but not expanded.
Referring to the drawings the post is shown as comprising a body member A and a clamping member B. The body A is constructed of a tubular metallic section 10 which is cut longitudinally as at 11 so as to form sharp gripping edges 12 and 13. After the section 10 is cut longitudinal same is expanded so as to dispose the walls of said out in spaced relation to each other. The clamping member B is also formed of a metallic tube 14 provided at spaced points with alined diametrically opposite bolt openings 15. The section 10 is also provided with a plurality of bolt openings 16.
In applying fence wires, indicated generally at 17 same are disposed transversely of the section 10 across the opening formed by expanding said section. The tube 14 is then applied between the edges 12 and 13 and bolts 18 passed through alining openings 15 and respective openings 16. Nuts 19 on said bolts are then operated to draw the tube 14; and the section 10 together and thus clamp the wires 17 between the edges 12 and 13 and the tube 1 1.
What I claim is A fence post comprising a metal tube cut longitudinally through one side in a plane radial of the tube whereby sharp gripping edges are provided, at the outer ends of the walls formed by the out, said tube being ex panded to dispose the adjacent walls formed by the out in spaced relation, a second tube of greater diameter than the distance be tween the adjacent walls formed by the cut, and bolts extending through the first and second named tubes for drawing the latter into the space between the adjacent walls formed by the cut in the first named tubes whereby fence wires may be securely clamped between the outer edges of the adjacent walls formed by the cut and the second named tube.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
