Be it known that'I, FRANK T. Baum, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blue Island, in the county of Cool: and State of Illinois, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Self- Contained Electric Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in portable self contained electric lamps, and is designed especially for use in connection with railroads as a signal lamp to be carried in the hand or on the arm as is customary. The lamp may or course, however, be employed tor other uses by other persons, where su h an implement is required.
The ilrimary object of the invention is to improve the construction of this type of lamps to furnish a device simplein construction and facile in operation and manipulation, and at the same time efficient in performing the functions for which it is in-' tended.
The invention consists essentially in certain combinations and arrangements of parts of the lamp to provide for its assembly or detachment, and also in the cooperation of parts to illumine the lamp or extinguish the same, when desired. These and other features will be described hereinafter and more fully pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of the invention.

In the preferred embodiment of my miventiou, the barrel 1 is supported in the base 2 by means of a divided ring 3, and the ring is clamped on the barrel by means of the slotted cam plate 4 having-a pivot 5 at one end of the divided ring and a pin 6 passed through the slot '7 and fixed to the other end of the ring. In this manner, the barrel may be moved to adjusted position with relation to the base, and then by turning handle 8, the cam plate will clamp the ring about the barrel which is there heldby its frictional contact, and the barrel may be entirely detached with turning the plate and withdrawing the barrel from the open ring.
The barrel 1 is open at top and bottom, the top being closed by a lid or cover 9 which fits neatly over the barrel and may be secured thereon by means of the two bayonet slots 10, 10 and studs or pins 11, 11, as will he understood.
The lamp is equipped with a bail as usual, which is formed of sections 12, 12, 13 that are pivoted at 14-, and have overlapping ends that provide a friction lock to hold the bail extended. This construction of bail permits the lamp to be conveniently held in one hand, or rather on the arm, with the hand free, so that by bending the bail the lamp may be, held on the arm and the hand of that arm used, with the electric light 15 shining on the hand, or an article held in the hand.
The lamp 15 is adapted to project through the open end 16 of the rounded bottom 17 of the barrel, and a wire cage 18 may be fixed to the barrel to protect the bulb of the lamp. The battery for the lamp is made up of a lamp or lantern embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the barrel of the lamp, separated from its base, showing a battery of cells and the lamp connections or contact plates. The lamp 15 is secured to the underside of the base plate and the base plate is open at 27' and 28 so that the contact plates 24 and 25 may be passed therethrough.
The battery is secured to the frame by means of a pair of diametrically arranged rods or bolts 250 fixed to the plate 26 and projecting upwardly therefrom to the top of the battery. .\t their upper ends these rods are joined by a cr ss bar {ll having eyes 32. one of which is fitted in the eve 33 of the rod and the other eye is titled over a book 34 at the upper end of the rod 29. This construction of retaining rods permits the attachment and detachment of the battery to the frame with facility, as the battery may be detached by loosening the eye 32 from the hook- 34, the llOOlv'S ;J233 remaining joined as a hinge, then by throwing back the bar 31 the battery may be disengaged from its frame or holder.
The bail sections 12 are free to swing on their trunnions 35, and the trunnions themselves, are in turn free to turn in their bearings 36 of the barrel 1. As shown most satisfactorily in Fig. 7 one of the side arms 27 has a plate attached thereto by means of the rivet 46 and slot 4.7, the plate being designated by the number 48 and approximately as wide as the side arm 27. At its upper end this plate is perforated and is passed over one of the trun nions so that it. will be understood that the plate is immovable with relation to the battery holder or frame. At its lower end the plate is bent with a foot 49 upon which an insulating block 50 is secured. The con tact plate. 2! is of elastic metal and in normal position is below the opening 27 in the disk 26, but it will be seen that when the battery and its holder are moved relatively to the barrel and plate 48 the con tact plate 2.4 will engage the insulated block 50 and be pressed thereby through the opening 27'. Thus when the battery and its holder are in raised position in the barrel, with the lamp extinguished, the plates 22 and 24 are out of contact and the circuit is broken. But when the battery and its holder with the lamp are in l ngered position, with the lamp projecting through opening 16 the lamp is ignited because of the Contact of plates 22 (Fig. 2) completing the lamp circuit. Thus when the lamp is projected from the barrel it is ignited. and when it is withdrawn into the barrel it is autonmtically extinguished.
The movement of the battery, its holder and lamp arc accomplishedby oscillation of the bail sections 12. In I -ig. a if the bail section is turned to the right for instance it engages a pin all which revolves the plate on the square part 37 of the trunnion. The trunnion is turned and the cam 43 with it and the cam engaging the face depresses he battery holder and lamp causing the contact plates to engage as described and projecting the ignited lamp from the barrel. The bail may now be turned to upright position. leaving the earn 43 in frictitmal contact with the cam edge to hold the parts in adju ted position. By swinging the bail section .to the left in. Fig. 5 the bail will engag e the pin 41 at the left and continued movement of the bail will revolve the trunnion in reverse dime-- tion until the cam plate 43 engages the cam face 44 to lift the batteev holding frame, break the contact and withdraw the lamp into the barrel as it is extinguished.
Having thus fully described my invention.

l. The combination with a lamp base in cluding a divided clamp ring, of a barrel. a slotted cam plate pivoted to one end of the ring and a pin on the other end of said ring engaged in the slotted plate as described.
2. The Combinat ion in a lamp with its barrel. of a bail, and means actuated by the bail for projecting the lamp from the barrel and igniting it.
3. The combination in an electric lamp with a barrel inclosing a battery frame and lamp, of a piv ted bail, and means actuated by said bail in its movement for projecting the lamp from the barrel and igniting the lamp. i

The combinationwith a lamp barrel and battery supporting frame therein, of a pair of trunnions supported in the barrel, a cam on each trunnion, complementary faces on the frame, a fixed actuating plate on each trunnion having a pair of studs as described, and a bail pivoted on the trunnions adapted to engage said studs for the purpose set forth.
10. The combination with a lamp barrel of a movable battery supporting frame and lamp, means for moving th" frame, and means between the frame a1, barrel for completing an electric circuit to light the lamp.
