DRAFT APPLIANCE.
insaies.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J OHN M. WRIGHT, of Brainard, in the county of Butler and State of Nebraska, and CHARLES M. EAsT, of Ulysses, in the county of Butler and State of Nebraska, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improveinents in Draft Appliances; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relatesto improvements in draft appliances and particularly to combined pole or tongue attaching and supporting means for binders and the like.
One object of the invention is to provide an appliance of this character which will permit the team to be hitched close to the machine and to enable the machine to make short square turns without danger of upsetting.
Another object is to provide a draft appliance in which the lead end of the pole or tongue may be placed in the center of a four-abreast team and in which the weight of the pole is removed from the necks of the draft animals.
A further object is to provide a draft appliance shown in U. S. Patent No. 9888 15 granted to us April 4, 1911, whereby the same is rendered more efficient.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of our improved draft appliance; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof; Fig. 3 is a front'end view; Fig. d is a detail perspective view of the pole supporting truck of the appliance; Fig. 5 is a similar view of.
the lead end of the pole. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the outer end of the inner section of the pole and the brace bar thereof, showing these parts disconnected.
Our improved draft appliance comprises a tongue or pole formed in inner and outer sections 1 and 2. The outer end of the inner section of the pole is provided on one side with an offset 3 and to said offset end of the inner section of the pole is pivotally connected the inner end of the outer section '2. The outer section is pivotally connected to the outer end of the inner section by a transverse pin or bolt 4:, to one end of which and to the outer section of the pole is connected an angular brace 5. Connected to the inner end of the inner section of the pole 1 is a downwardly curved attaching or draft bar Specification of Letters Patent.

6, a similar bar 7 being connected at its forward end to the inner section of the pole near the forward end thereof as shown.
Connected at its forward end to the forward ing bar 10. The rear or inner end of the draft bar 7 also curves downwardly in line with the bars 6 and 10 and is adapted to be connected to the binder in the same manner as the bars 6 and 10. By thus constructing the draft pole and its attaching and bracing bars it will be seen that the pole may be connected at a suitable position to the binder to prevent the draft animals from running into the standing grain, at the same time the outer or lead section 2 of the pole may be connected with the center of a team hitched four-abreast to the machine.
In order to support the weight of the pole and to remove the weight thereof from the necks of the draft animals, we provide a pole supporting truck comprising a forked frame 11 in the lower ends of which is arranged a collar 12 on which are revolubly mounted supporting wheels 13. The forked frame 11 has a swiveled engagement with the lower angular or inwardly bent lower end of a fork attaching bolt 14 the upper end of which is loosely engaged with a bearing aperture 15 formed in the forward end of the inner section 1 of the pole and on the upper end of which is arranged a nut 16 whereby the truck is pivotally attached to the inner section of the pole. When thus attached to the section 1 of the pole the truck will swing in any direction with the movement of the tongue and will support the entire weight of both the inner and outer sections of the pole, thus removing the weight of the latter from the necks of the draft animals. 1
By constructing and arranging our improved draft appliance as herein shown and described it will be seen that the draft animals may be hitched more closely to the machine or vehicle and may thus come under better control. The outer section of the tongue when pivoted to the inner section as herein shown and described is free to swing upwardly or downwardly, but is securely fastened against any lateral movement thereon.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention willbe readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle orsacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described our invent-ion, what we claim is:
' In a draft appliance for binders and the like, a pole comprising an inner section oflset on one side at its outer end, an outer sectionpivotally connected to the offset outer end of the inner section to swing in a vertical plane, a brace connected with said outer and inner sections of the pole, an attaching bar connected to the inner section of the pole, angularly disposed draft bars also connected to the inner section of. the pole, a cross bar connected with said inner section of the pole and with said draft bars, and a pole supporting truck arranged beneath and pivotally connected to the inner section of the pole.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
