AUTOMATIC STEAM-'PIPE-ISOLATING VAIZIV'E..
Specication of Letters Patent.' I Patented Fb,24, 1.914.
Appl'ication filed September 7, 1912. Serial No. 719,205.
To all whom it may concern: V Be it known that I, J Akon LLL, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Homberg-Essenb'erg,y -Germany, have vin-v vented an Automatic Steam-Pipe-Isolating Valve, of which the following is .aspecication. e f
The present invention relates to a device for isolatingthe steam pipe automaticallyv from the boiler in case of a breakage. u
The invention consists in the provision'in the pipe of a lift valve adapted by spring pressure to be normally closed in opposition to the steam pressure. This valve is adapted to beheld in open position a piston which is acted upon by the pressure normally prevailing at the discharge side of the valve. If' the pressure should be lowered by a breakage of the pipe, the piston immediately allows the valve to close. An addi-y tional piston, acted upon by the pressure prevailing at the inlet side 'of the valve, is provided for opening the valve initially to set the steam flowing through the pipe.
In the accompanying drawings the inven tion is illustrated, Figure lrepresenting a longitudinal section of the device,.-Fig. 2, a section of the same showing the position of the elements when starting, and Fig. '3, a sectional view showing the position after A lift valve b vis seated in the vvalve casing a and provided with-lasten@ -cguided through a cover plate d and-a second plate e. A spring f, encirclingy said stem, 1s adapted to maintain said valve normally closed in opposition to the highest prevail,
f .ing steam pressure. At opposite sides of the valve stem closed cylinders g and h are arranged in which move pistons c' and 7cY the rods of which areguided through the plate e and connected with each other'by a` cross l baum-which is passed through a slot inthe valve jstem.l Said bar m ismounted in such a manner in the three elements as-to be able to assume the slanting positions shown in Figs. 2 and 3.v Springs Z encircle the two piston rods labove the plate l@which springs merely act as uers and prevent the pistons from descending below the position shown in Fig. 1. The steam pipes n and o .communicate with the cylinders g and h, beneath the pistons, by means of branches p and g each of which is provided with a cock (pli, g1)V the branchp being also fitted vwith ."a whistle r which is sounded while the cock p2? is open.
TheJ modus operandi is as followsz-In order tolift the valve b, which the steam lpressure alone isy incapable of doing, the `cockplv 1s 'openedcausing the steam to enl, ter beneath the piston z'. The surface of this Vpiston being larger than that of the valve Z2,
the piston is raised, the cross-bar m assumes the slanting position showninFig. 2, the kvalve Z is lifted, and the steam is set iowing' through the pipe. Thereupon the cock g1. is
opened whereby the steam is Y. permitted tov enter the'cylinder h beneath the piston 7c, raising 'the' latter. Thesize of the piston':
being maintained in open position even if the. steam pressure be unstable. As soon as ythepiston 7c is raised the cockp1 should be closed whereupon the pistonI descends to the position-shown in Fig. 3. In order to prevent the cock p ffrom being left open inadvertently, the whistle '1j soundsy all the While thefcock is open. During the undisturbed working ,the position of the device shownin Fig. 3-is maintained. If a breakage -in the pipe should occur, ythe colisequently failing steam pressure beneath thev pistonsk will immediately allow said piston to descend. By the action of the spring f the valve I) isforced into its seat and the` flow of steam cut off. For closing the valve v steam pressure, two elo-sed' cylinders arranged at opposite sides .of the valve stem, pistons arranged respectively in said cylinhold it normally closed in opposition to the ders, guide rods connectedy to said pistons and held together with the valve stem in a common plane, a cross-bar connecting the rods and the stem so that the valve is opened thereby when either of the pistons is raised in its cylinder, and means for setting one of said cylinders temporarily into communication With the steam pipe at the inlet side of vthe valve so as to raise its piston for opening 70 is chosen with a view to insure the valve b said valve, the other cylinder being in communication with the pipe at the discharge side of the valve and its piston being adapted to be raised by the pressure and to hold the valveropen as long as the. pipe is intact and allow it to close if the pipe should break.
2. An automatic steam pipe isolating valve, comprising alift valve guided by a stem, a spring actingvon said valve so as to hold it normally closed in opposition to the steam pressure, a closed cylinder communieating with the steam pipe at the inlet side of the valve, a piston arranged in said cylin der and connected to the valve so as to open the latter when acted upon by the pressure, another cylinder communicating with the Vpipe at the discharge side of the Avalve, a
piston in the latter cylinder connected with the valve so as to retain the latter in open p0- sition under the influence of the pressure as 2o long as the pipe is intact and allow it to close if the pipe breaks, means for interru ting the communications between the pipe and the cylinders, and a Whistle arranged so as to be sounded as long as the first-men- 25 tioned cylinder is in communication withI the pipe, substantially as and for the pur-
