CHARLES J. CALLAHAN, 0F ATTLEBOBO, MA$SACHUSETTS.
WATCJELHOLDER FOR EXPANSIBLE BRACELETS, 8w.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 17, 191 1.
Application filed August 18, 1913. Serial No. 785,224.
To all whom if; may concern Be it known that I, CnanLns J. GALLA- nAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol. and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in atch-Holders for Expansible Bracelets, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to watch-holders, such, for example, as are adapted to be attached to flexible bracelets, chains, etc, and it consists of an apertured one-piece holder element having a pair of oppositely disposed, inwardly bent, resilient, lateral fingers or clips, an inwardly bent hook located at the bottom end of the holder, intermediate the said fingers, and having the upper end portion of the holder provided with an inwardly bent part adapted to freely receive and retain therein the pendant part of a watch.
By means of my presentimprovement the holder may be produced in a very simple and inexpensive manner. When the article has a watch removably mounted therein the presence of the watch itself serves to close the mouth or opening of the lower hook, thereby automatically rendering the latter a safety hook, in that an end link of a bracelet or chain mounted in the hook cannot become accidentally disconnected from it. The opposite end of the chain, assuming the latter to be a flexible bracelet, may be detachably connected direct to the watch-bow itself of the thus mounted watch.
in the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents, in elevation, the inner face of a watch-holder embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a corresponding side elevation, viewed from the left of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a vertical central sectional view of the watch holder device showing a watch mounted therein, and also showing a flexible bracelet having its end members attached to the safety hook of the holder and to the bow of the watch, respectively.
A, in the drawings, designates my improved one-piece watch-holder, complete; the same being formed from suitable sheet metal. The lower portion of the base part a is provided on each side of the median line m with a narrow lateral extension Z), and having a central member 0 extending from the holders lower end. The members Z; are curved inwardly and constitute fingers or clips having a degree of resiliency; the mem ber c is also bent inwardly to form an open hook. The upper part of the base or back a is also curved inwardly, as shown at (Z, and terminates in a tie or loop (Z The base is given a concave-convex form and provided with an elongated opening a through which opening the pendant portion of the watch may be readily passed in attaching the watch to and detaching it from the holder. The broken line w, Fig. 1, indi cates the rel ative position of the watch when mounted in the holder; it will be noted that the watch is yieldingly supported at three points, via, the two clips Z), Z), and the bent upper extension (Z.
Fig. 3 shows the relation of the parts of the holder to a watch to and bracelet B when they are normally mounted and connected. The outer rim '1 of the watch is engaged by the inwardly extending resilient members Z), Z), and (Z, while at the same time the watch rim operates to practically close the mouth of the braceletattacl1ing hook c. The pendant portion .9 of the watch, including the how 8 extends through the opening a in member, (Z, thus permitting an end of the bracelet or chain to hook into the bow. It may be added that the arrangement is such that the end of said bracelet or chain hooked into the lower hook o is prevented from being accidentally unhooked therefrom, thus constituting what may be termed a safety hook. In assembling the holder, watch and bracelet, an end of the latter is first hooked into the member 6, then mounting the watch in the spring clips Z), 6, at the same time inserting the pendant portion through the base opening a until it bears against the end part (Z of the bent end or neck (Z, followed by hooking the other end of the bracelet into the watch-bow .9 all as clearly shown in Fig. 3, thus completing the operation. Obviously, a reversal of the operation will cause a disassembling of the parts.
I claim as my improvement and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent 1. A watch-holder device formed from a single piece of sheet metal stock, said holder comprising a base part having its upper end portion bent inwardly to form a neck capable of receiving the pendant of a watch, a pair of oppositely arranged, resilient fingers or clips formed on the lower portion of the base, said oh and neck parts constituting three bearing points for engagement with a watch, and an inwardly bent, upturned hook extending from the lower end of the base, the mouth of said hook adapted to be closed by a watch normally held in position by said neck and clips, whereby a chain or article mounted in the hook is rendered safe against accidental detachment.
2. The combination with a holder of the character described, having inwardly bent neck, hook and clip members integral there with, of a watch mounted in the holder and held therein by means of said neck and clip members, and a bracelet having one end thereof detachably engaging said hook, the other end detachably connected to the bow of the watch, whereby the presence of the thus mounted watch acts to close said hook and prevent the bracelet from becoming accidentally detached therefrom.
In testimony whereof I have aiiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
