APPARATUS FOR TREATING HATS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1W, 191d.
Application filed January 22, 1913. Serial No. 743,618.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Luis]: DE Nuooi, a citizen of the United States, residing at amaica, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Treating Hats, of which the following is a specifica tion.
This invention relates to an apparatus for heating, softening and steaming hats, and the object thereof is to provide a comparatively simple, inexpensive and easily operated mechanism whereby the hats may be quickly and accurately conditioned for shaping or blocking; and generation of too high a temperature avoided; and the expenditure of time and labor greatly economized as compared with the present methods em ployed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device or apparatus wherein a number of hats may be heated and steamed so that the blocking and shaping of the hat may be subsequently accomplished.
A further object of the invention is to provide in connection with a hat steaming apparatus, an attachment for use in heating luring pads used for polishing and finishing hats of various character, and to be used further as a heating plate upon which straw hats may be laid for straightening and softening the brims thereof.
With the above and various other objects in view the invention consists essentially in the combination of a specially constructed steam generating boiler upon which and in communication with the interior thereof, is disposed a suitable steaming pot or receptacle adapted to receive hats of various sizes, and a novel and peculiarly formed attachment also in communication with the interior of the boiler, the same to be used as will be hereinafter fully described.
In describing my invention in detail ref erence will be had to theaccompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the entire apparat-us. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional View of the hat pot cover. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the hat pot. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the closed funnel shaped attachment, and Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the said attachment.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention the numeral 1 des1gnates a suitable boiler stand, preferably composed of galvanized iron, upon which is mounted a boiler 2, the latter adapted to contain water, whereby steam is quickly generated by reason of the heat applied to the base thereof, the heat being derived from any suitable source such as a gas burner having a gas inlet pipe 3 leading within the boiler stand beneath the boiler.
The boiler 2 is supplied with the usual boiler accessories such as a water gage 4, steam gage 5, safety valve 6, and an outlet water faucet 7, the function of each being apparent. ll or the purpose of filling or supplying the boiler with water a suitable funnel 8 is attached or secured upon one side thereof through the medium of a supply pipe 9 having a valve 10 disposed thereupon, this construction permitting a refilling or replenishing of water within the boiler at any time desired. If convenient, a valve controlled supply pipe may be directly attached to the boiler thus eliminating the necessity of the funnel.
A copper steaming pot or receptacle 11 of any desired size is disposed upon the top of the boiler, and held in communicative relation thereto through the medium of a connecting pipe 12, the latter supplying steam from the boiler into the pot. A check valve 13 is carried by the said connecting pipe, its operation being controlled by means of a depending rod 1t slidably mounted within suitable brackets 15 upon the side of the boiler stand, and terminating at its lower extremity in a foot pedal 15. A chain 17 connects the upper end of the rod 1 1 to a suitable pivoted arm 18 carried upon the valve 13, thus it will be seen that the desired movement of the rod will actuate the valve and either open or close communication between the boiler and the pot. A suitable 'l"'union or joint 19 is provided within the pot 11 upon the terminus of the connecting pipe 12, to which is secured a number (preferably two) of oppositely disposed pipe sections 20, whereby the steam is dis charged within the pot through a like number of depending elbows 21 against the base thereof, thus preventing direct contact with the hats placed thereupon. Suitable nipples for spraying steam may be secured upon each elbow if desired, this fact resting upon he di 'cretion of the manufacturer.
A specially constructed open top pot cover is detachably secured to the pct 11, the said top being materially smaller than the top of a pot proper. An annular band 23 is secured upon the inner lower face of the cover 22 and extends (when the latter is in place upon the pot), into the top of the pot so as to engage the sides thereof, in this manner holding the cover in place and preventing the escape of steam between the cover and the pot. Handles 2 of any construction, are secured upon each side of the cover to facilitate the removal or handling thereof. 7
The attachment employed in connection with the boiler comprises a funnel shaped member 25 having a closes top 26, the funnel being connected to the boiler through the medium of a suitable pipe 2'? whereby steam is free to pass into the funnel body for heating the plate or funnel top. By placing the usual flannel luring pads upon the plate the same may be heated as desired thus conditioning them for polishing and finishing hats, or when required, straw hats may be laid directly upon the plate thereby heating, straightening and softening the brims as desired.
The pot when used without a cover is particularly adapted for steaming ladies hats or enlarged hats of various sizes while the cover by reason of its narrow open top is particularly adapted for steaming mens hats or hats smaller in size than the pot top opening.
It will be seen from the above taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that the operation of the check valve, through the manipulation of the foot Pedal, controls the flow of steam into the pot; that the peculiar and novel manner in which the connecting pipe terminates within the pot prevents a direct contact of the steam against the hats; and that the funnel shaped member employed in connection with the barrel greatly adds to the eiiiciency and utility of the same.
It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my device will be fully appreciated.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts, provided such changes fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
Havin thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a hat treating apparatus, the combination of a steam generating boiler, an open top steaming pot in communication therewith, a steam suoply pipe connecting the boiler with the said pot, a branch pipe disposed within the said pot into which the steam is discharged from the said supply pipe, a removable pot top having a constricted mouth over which the hats to be treated are arranged, a band carried by the said top adapted to be embraced by the said pot for effecting a secure connection therebetween, and handles arranged upon the pot top to facilitate the removal thereof to permit hats to be arranged upon the top of the pot, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a hat treating apparatus, the combination of a steam generating boiler, an open top steaming potin communication therewith, a steam supply pipe connecting the boiler with the said pot, a branch pipe dis posed within the said pot at the base thereof into which the steam is discharged from the said supply pipe, elbows carried by the said branch pipe for discharging the steam there from against the bottom of the said pot, a removable pot cover having a constricted mouth over which the hats to be treated are arranged, a metallic band carried by the said cover adapted to be embraced by the said pot for effecting a secure connection thcrebetween, handles arranged upon the pot to facilitate the removal thereof to permit hats to be arranged upon the top of the pot, and a funnel-shaped member having a closed top, the said member being carried by and supported in communicative relation with the said member for heating the top of the said member, as and for the purpose set forth.
