RECEPTACLE-CLOSURE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BELVIN T. VVILLISTON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Receptacle-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to receptacle closures, and consists in improvements in the construction thereof by means of which a casing, such as a strainer casing, can be opened and closed for inspection or repair with ease and certainty and with a mini-' mum of liabiliay to error or damage.
In the drawings hereto annexed which illustrate an example of my improvements as applied to a strainer-casing, Figure 1 shows a strainer in end elevation; Fig. 2 is a sect-ion of Fig. 1, along the line 2-2 viewed from above; Fig. 3 is a top plan View; and Fig. i is a side elevation partly broken away to disclose a portion of the interior.
The strainer casing marked C is provided with two sets of internal ribs G, C, which form grooves at opposite sides of the casing, between which the strainer plate S is inserted and held. The strainer plate S is rectangular in shape.
The lid or cover L ofthe casing C is a casting provided with a shallow cylindrical projection or boss L on its inner side which fits, though not snugly, in the circular aperture in the casing O, through which the strainer plate S is inserted. This projection or boss L is diametrically divided by a groove, the depth of which is slightly increased by the formation of the ridges L, L, on the inside of the lid or cover L (see Fig. 4c). The longer dimension of the strainer plate is such that its outer edge is confined in the groove between the ridges L, L, so that when in position the strainer plate S is securely inclosed and held on all sides. The cover L is provided with ears E, which engage respectively with the holding studs B, B, which are threaded and carry the nuts N, N. These nuts are provided respectively with conical seating ends at n which fit into conical seats 6 6 upon the ears E, E, so that independently of the functioning of the studs B, B the nuts N, N are self centering and serve to guide the cover L with automatic accuracy into Specification of Letters Patent.

its position on the casing. In order to guard against accidental removal and loss of the nuts N, N, retaining collars b, b are pinned at the ends of the studs B, B.
The ear E so engages the stud B that within a limited range a tipping movement is allowed. To this end the hole for the stud is slightly tapered as at 6 if the nut N be turned down in advance of the nut N the cover L will not bind upon the stud B but will tip and accommodate itself to the situation.
The ear E is notched at 6 so that when both nuts N, N are loosened the cover L may be swung to one side on the stud B which acts as a pivot, thus disclosing the interior of the casing. While the stud B in itself affords no restraint laterally in one direction by reason of the notch 6 the conical seat 6 which is engaged by the conical end a of the nut N insures the proper confinement and centering of the ear E when the nut N is turned downward and therefore insures the proper entry of the cylindrical projection L into the aperture in the casing and the proper engagement of the outer edge of the strainer plate S by the groove between the projections L, L. In order further to facilitate the opening of the strainer casing a lifting spring D is provided which is normally held under compression between the ear E and the lug F. As soon as the nuts N, N are both slackened the spring D moves the cover L keeping the conical engaging portions n, e in contact with each other so that the effect of the spring is to maintain the cover L in substantial parallelism with the face of the casing with which it is engaged. WVhen the projections on the inside of the cover L are moved far enough to clear the face of the casing the clearance is uniform at all points and the cover may be swung to disclose the interior of the casing. In practice a strainer of this character will be fixed in such position that the cover L will swing in a vertical or nearly vertical plane, the stud B being at the upper part of the casing.
The holding studs B, B, are not only threaded into the lugs F, F, but are preferably also pinned therein so as to be perfectly secure. If desired a packing ring P may be inserted in the inner face of the cover L to engage with the outer face of the casing C.
The construction above described inakes opening and closing of the strainer casing easy, and yet no matter how rapidly the opening and closing is accomplished the fastening means above described insure the proper positioning and centering of the cover so as to avoid injury to it or to the casing or strainer plate.
lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a receptacle, the combination with a strainer casing having an inlet, an outlet, an opening in one side between the inlet and the outlet, diametrically disposed lugs on the outside of said casing, a rigid stud projecting upwardly from each lug above said opening, and a closure for the casing co1nprising a plate provided with ears extending from the edge of the closure on diametrically opposite sides thereof in one of which ears is a perforation fitting freely one of said studs to permit rotation of the closure about the same and also to move longitudinally thereof, a notch in the other ear to engage the other stud and arrest the closure above the opening in the casing, a spring surrounding the hinged stud between the lug and the ear tending to force the closure in a straight line from the casing, and nuts threaded on the other end of said stud to depress the closure and secure it in position over the open ing in the casing.
2. In a receptacle, the combination With a strainer casing having an inlet, an outlet, an
gage the upper end of the strainer plate,
ears projecting from the edge of the closure on opposite sides in one of Which is a perfo 'ation through which passes freely one of said rigid studs to form a hinge pin therefor around which said closure may be swung and be moved in a straight line axially thereof, a notch being formed. in the other ear to engage the second stud when the closure is swung above the casing and arrest the said closure in position over the opening in the casing, a spring surrounding the hinge stud between the lug and the ear tending at all times to force the closure in a straight line away from the opening in the casing, and nuts threaded on the outer ends of said studs by means of which said closure is depressed into contact with the casing and secured in position over the opening therein.
Signed by me at Boston, Massachusetts, this eleventh day of October, 1911.
