JOSEPH STOCKER, OF LOGANSPORT, INDIANA.
COMBINED ROCKER AND CRADLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 10, 1914.
Application filed April 18, 1912. Serial No. 691,708.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH STOGKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Logansport, in the county of Cass, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Rockers and Cradles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined chair and cradle, the primary object of the invention being to provide a simple and novel knock down structure embodying a series of parts joined in a novel manner and embodying a cradle with an attached rocker whereby motion may be imparted to the cradle by an occupant of the chair in the ordinary rocking motion.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain other combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is an end elevation thereof looking toward the rocker. Fig. 4 is an opposite end elevation thereof. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view.
Referring to the drawings in detail, my improved combined rocking chair and cradle is shown as comprising an end member 10 and an end member 11 each being formed at its lower end with opposite extensions or curved rockers 12 and connected by longitudinal side members 13. Each of the side members 13 are provided with upper and lower reduced extensions 14 which engage vertical openings 15 similarly spaced in the end walls 10 and 11 and such extensions are provided with a plurality of apertures 16 for receiving interchangeable pins 17 therethrough whereby the parts are capable of being readily connected or assembled and also adjusted to vary the distance or width of the space 16 between the end walls and the respective end portions 18 of the side walls, so that these side walls, end walls and bottom may be quickly and easily assembled and clamped together, and may be readily disassembled for storage or transportation.
The cradle is provided with a bottom 19 which is formed at its ends with oppositely extending reduced portions or tongues 20 which engage between the end portions 18 of the side members 13 and the respective end members 10 and 11, for supporting said bottom, and which is spaced apart from these side walls as indicated at 31, so that the bed clothes may be passed therethrough for securing them in place over the infant occupant, who, by his restlessness tends to dislodge the cover. The extensions 20 are securely clamped between the adjacent sides of the openings 16 by means of the pins or wedges 17, to prevent lateral or other movement of the bottom, which is braced at its central portion by a cross member 21 connecting the side members therebeneath. The chair forming a part of the device comprises an end member 22 having a rocker portion 23 and an upwardly extending back portion 24, the said end member 22 being secured to the end member 11 by a seat portion 25 which is also provided with a pair of oppositely extending reduced tongues 26 at each side to similarly engage through the end members 11 and 22 and capable of adjustment therein as hereinbefore specified.
The back portion 24 of the chair is secured between the portion 22 and the end member 11 and has its lower end formed with reduced extensions 28 engaging in the bottom 25 and secured. Thus the parts may be readily secured in position and an occupant of a chair in the ordinary rocking motion will impart a similar motion to the cradle.
It is obvious that the device can be made in .any suitable size for use as a toy or otherwise.
The end member 22 of the chair and the adjacent end member 11 are connected by a brace or rung 29 beneath the seat 25, while said end member 11 is also cut out at its upper edge as shown at 30 to permit convenient access to the cradle by a person sitting in the chair.
I claim:
1. In a cradle, a pair of side walls each having oppositely projecting upper and lower apertured extensions, a pair of apertured end walls through which said extensions project, a bottom having oppositely extended tongues which are seated between the ends of the side Walls and the sides of the end walls respectively, and means ooacting with the side walls and end walls for securely clamping said tongues therebetween.
2. In a cradle, a pair of side walls each having oppositely projecting upper and lower apertured extensions, a pair of apertured end walls through which said extensions project, a bottom having oppositely extended tongues which are seated between the ends of the side walls and the sides of the end walls respectively, the major portion of said bottom being of less Width than the distance between said side walls, so as to provide spaces between said bottom and side walls, and means for securing said 15 JOSEPH STOOKER.
