COMMODE-PAN STRUCTURE FOR. TILTING BEDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 10, 1914.
Application filed February 12, 1912. Serial No. 677,166.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY E. BOWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Commode-Pan Structure for Tilting Beds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to commode pan structure for tilting beds and is particularly designed as an improvement in apparatus for application to beds designed to be utilized in surgical operations and for other similar objects.
It is aimed, in portion, to provide a structure of commode pan which is applicable to surgical beds and which may be gradually adjusted to maintain a substantially horizontal position during the gradual tilting operation of the bed.
It is designed to be detachable and preferably comprises a seat pivotally secured at one end and having its other end capable of adjustment in an arcuate direction. In the efi'ectuation of such adjustment, I desirably utilize a base having a ratchet and yoke structure, the yoke being secured to the free end of the seat and being pivotally mounted thereon, so as to permit of assuming various bracing relations to the seat and the base. In conjunction with the seat and base structure, I utilize a pan proper which is readily removable and the removability of such pan renders it possible to collapse the seat structure so that it occupies a minimum space only and greatly facilitates the insertion of the same beneath the patient upon the bed. In conjunction with this commode pan structure, I desirably use an adjustable back rest, which may be adjusted so as to maintain the patient in a sitting posture.
One of the essential and advantageous features of my seat structure, resulting partially from the removability of the pan from beneath the seat while in comparatively elevated position, is the fact that the said structure serves to maintain the body of the patient in a position for ready cleansing and treatment or further operation. The operations to which this device is peculiarly adapted, are any of those operations which are necessary in the vicinity of the rectum.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts, and in which- Flgure 1 is a perspective view of a tilting bed structure with my invention applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a detail view in elevation of the pan structure in operative position, and, Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 2.
In the drawings, the ordinary bedstead is shown at l and centrally and pivotally mounted thereon is what may be termed the bed proper 2 having a mattress 3 thereon and being elevated by means of a worm and rack structure 4 controlled by the crank handle 5. The racks are shown at 6 as being pivotally secured as at 7 t0 the bed proper and extending through casings supported by hangers 8 carried upon the bedstead 1. They are under the control of worms mounted upon shaft 9 which is rotatable as aforesaid, by the crank handle 5.
The tilting bed proper is desirably fitted with a back-rest 10 pivotally mounted at one end upon the base 11 having ratchet notches 12 therein for the adjustable reception of a bracing yoke 18.
The bed pan structure comprises a seat- 14. pivotally secured to a rectangular base 15 having ratchet notches 16 formed therein and the seat is adjustable and maintained in adjusted position by the coaction of a yoke member 17 with such ratchet notches 16, the notches within which said yoke rests, determining the angle of the seat to its base which desirably rests flat upon the mattress of the bed proper, if a mattress be used. The seat is desirably provided near its pivoted end with chains 18 and hooks 19, whereby the commode pan structure may be readily attached to the bed proper.
The seat is apertured as at 20 and beneath the aperture there are provided slideways 21 for the reception of flanges 22 upon the commode pan 23, which is provided with a handle 24:. This commode pan may, therefore, be removed or inserted at will.
In operation, assuming that the patient is lying at full length upon the bed, the commode pan structure with the pan removed, and in collapsed position, is slid beneath the patient and as the crank handle 5 is rotated to tilt the bed, the seat is gradually swung upon its pivot to maintain a substantially horizontal position. Thus the patient may be caused to assume a sitting posture by degrees and such sitting posture may be com plete or partial. When the seat is in proper position, the pan is slid into place if it is desired to utilize the pan or the tilting bed may be returned to normal position, leaving the patient in a position suitable for operation in a well known manner. If the pan is used as it may be, for the collection of poisonous matter or for the drainage of a wound or any other similar purpose, it may then be removed and the bed lowered: to normal position, whereupon the limbs of the patient are maintained in a position to tacilitate cleansing of the wound.
it will be seen that I have provided a structure of commode pan, which is readily attachable to a bed and may be adjusted to vary its angle with relation to the surface of such bed. It is par icularly advantageous to utilize a tilting bed structure since the movement of the head of the bed proper upwardly, tends to more the patient toward a sitting posture, while the adjustment of the seat of the commode pan structure causes it to maintain a horizontal position while constantly changing its angle with relation to the tilted bed. In this manner the patient may be readily caused to assume a sitting posture and as hitherto pointed out, the seat and base may be inserted beneath the patient with small difiioulty, because of its capability of collapsing to occupy aminimum space.
What I claim, is
l. A commode pan support for tilting beds comprising a seat capable of arcuate adjustment from a normally flat position, means for securing a pan to said seat.
2. A commode pan support for tilting beds comprising a seat capable of adjustment from a normally flat position to compensate for the tilting of the bed, and slideways on said seat for supporting a pan.
3. A commode pan support for tilting beds comprising a seat capable of adjustment from a normally flat position to compensate for tilting, and means for attaching said seat to the side of the bed.
A commode pan support for tilting beds comprising a seat pivoted-at one end, means for varying the elevation of the opposite end, chains fastened at. one end to said seat, and hooks on the other end for engaging the side of the bed at any point.
A commode pan support for tilting beds comprising an adjustable seat, and a removable pan secured to said seat.
in testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence or two witnesses.
