With these ends in vieugniy in vention conslsts in an automobile door-lock having certain details of construction and combinabe hereinafter desumer the lever will be cut off according to the distance between the position of the lock on the door and the desired position of the operating handle thereon.
In order to adapt my improved lock to be used with doors in which the separation of the handle and lock varies, I employ a self-contained vertically adj ustablc rollback case consisting of an outer plate 16 formed near its ends with vertical transversely arranged ribs 17 forming bearings for the inner plate 18 which is secured to the outer plate by screws 15) entering the threaded central portions of the said ribs.

In order that the inside of the door 22 may be neatly covered with upholstery so as to entirely conceal the roll-back case and lock, I employ a spacing ring 31 which is fitted over an annular shoulder 32 at the base of the shank 27. Upon the ring 31 I' place a finishing washer 35 which, by preference, will be finished to match other trinimings of the car. I thus secure a space between the plate 16 and the washer 35 for the reception of the upholstery 34 where it is perforated for the projection through it of the shank 27 of the roll-back 24.
The lever 3 extends directly upward beand 18 of the roll-back raised or lowered with respect to the lever until the handle has been positioned properly with relation to the lock. Any excess length of lever then projecting above the roll-back caseis cutofi.
It Wlll be seen that as there is no direct connection between the plates lfi and 18 and the lever 3, the roll-back case may be raised and lowered with respect to the lever as desired the only requirement being that in the'flinished position of the roll-back case the arm 25 of the roll-back shall engage with In using the lock, the depression of the handle 29 will efi'ect the retraction of the latch-bolt 2 through the medium of the le \81 3 and against the combined tension of the springs 10 and 11.
I claim:
1. In an adjustable lock for automobile l doors, the combination with a self-contained. latch-bolt lock provided with a latch-bolt and an upwardly extending swinging lever for the operation thereof, of a self-contained vertically movable roll-back case made independent of the said latch-bolt lock for attachment to an automobile door at any desired height above the said latchbolt, and adapted'to have the said lever thereof pass upward through it and pro vided with aroll-back for co-action with the said lever and with a handle for turning the roll-back.
2. In an adjustable lock for automobile doors, the combination with a latch-bolt lock provided with a latch-bolt and an upwardly extending swinging lever for the operation thereof, of a roll-back case made independent of the said latch-bolt lock, vertically adjustable with respect thereto and comprising inner and outer plates secured together, one of the plates being provided at its ends with fastening flanges and the two plates being separated from each other to permit the lever to extend upward between them, and a roll-back mounted in the said plates of the said independent vertically movable roll-back case and co-acting with the said lever.
In an adjustable lock for automobile doors, the combination with a latch'boltlock provided with a latch-bolt and an up', wardly extending lever for the operation thereof, of a roll-back case adapted to have s the lever pass upward through it so as to perinrt the case to be vertically adjustable with respect to the lever, a rollback mounted in the said case and provided with an outwardly projecting stem, a handle for application to the said stem, and a spacingring and finishing-washer interposed between the roll-baclr case and the handle.
