The general arrangement,- ot the trnek in the present case is substantially the saine ns in my patent referred to above. The rails are supported on parallel trains-verse metal ties, and hoth rails and ties may be of any desired cross section, provided only that suitable. flanges are present` for the attachment of myelips. rfhe ties shown both in the patented and the. prese-nt case are -heains. and the rails have the ordinary T section.

The tool to he used for this purpose forms no part of the present invention, but must be so designed as to exerty upward pressure against the head (lh of the clip eoineidentlv with downward forming pressure on the stein tf. The forms of clips shown in Figs. 1,3 and 4 are preferably made so as to have a driving fit in the notches Q, and when ydriven home and set up, are secured against any accidental displacements. The keys or wedges of Fig. 1 may be adapted to Fig. 4 also if desired by perforating the spur 71 adjacent to the stem.
In Fig. 5 is shown a bai", which in practice is 'made about four feet long,- of heavy iron or steel, for opening and closing the clips. One end of the bar at 8 is provided with a hook shaped jaw adapted to take under the end 3 of the clip, so that lift-ing power applied t'o the outer end of the bar will spring the clip open. The other end of the bar is 9 with a square hole, made large enough so that it will slip over the clip, to spring the sameback to its original form after it has been opened part wayby the other end of the bar.
Having thus describedmy invention, what I claim is 1. In a. railway struct-ure,

In a railway structure, metal tie plates having notches in their opposite edges 4in pairs, rails laid across said ties'. with their anges between the-notches of the respective pairs, separate malleable metal clips fitted to the notches and with their upper and lower extremities bent toward each other so as to forcibly clamp' the rail and tie plates together, and keys inserted between the notch wall and the clips to lock the latter against shifting.
