JOHN R. BALLEN'IINE, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
TOY GUN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 20, 1914.
Application filed September 24, 1913. Serial No. 791,485.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. BALLENTINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, inthe county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Guns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toy, air, pea, or blow guns, or the like, and its object is to provide a light, cheap and eflicient stock that can be attached to or detached from the barrel quickly for the purpose of compactness, for carrying or packing and shipping, without the aid of set screws, clamps, or other adjustable devices to hold the barrel in its proper position.
The stock may be cheaply made of wire bent to the form of a stock, and provided with loops or eyes through which the barrel extends and in which it is held by spring or friction pressure, and from which the barrel can be slipped out when it is desired to separate the parts, or into which the barrel can be slipped when the parts are assembled.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which is a side view of the gun.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 2 indicates the gun barrel, which may be made of any light sheet metal or the like, the invention being particularly adapted for light toy guns which can be sold for a few cents. As illustrated, the stock is made of wire bent to form an upper member 1 and a lower member 7 and a shoulder part 8, the whole being shaped in the out-line of a gun stock and adapted to fit against the shoulder of a child or other operator. The lower member 7 is extended along under the barrel and substantially parallel thereto, as indicated at 9, and at its front end is curved up and bent to form a loop or eye 3, which engages the barrel toward the muzzle thereof. The upper member 1 of the stock is bent to form a loop or eye 4 which engages the barrel near the breech end thereof, and is also extended downwardly to produce a brace 6, terminating in a loop or eye 5 which is bent around the lower member 7 to join said members together and stiffen the structure. The barrel may be slipped in or out through the eyes 3 and 4, and when engaged therein will be held in proper position. Any kind or shape of barrel may be used, according to the type of gun. I have illustrated a blow gun, and for convenience of operation the breech end thereof is curved downwardly and laterally behind the loop 4, as indicated at 10, to bring the mouth piece 11 in such position that it will fit the lips of the child or other operator holding the stock in position against the shoulder. This enables the gun to be sighted and blown at the same time. The barrel will ordinarily be formed of tubing or any light sheet metal, and it may be tapered, and in this case the rear loop or eye 4- will be enlarged accordingly, and the barrel slipped in from the rear end, and where sights are used on the barrel the loops may be left partly open, or flattened on the top so as to avoid obstruction of the line of vision along the sights. Any kind of breech or discharge mechanism may be used. The barrel is supported at a plurality of points, and the invention provides a very simple and effective method of constructing a cheap stock suitable for the purpose indicated. Instead of being made of wire, the stock can be produced in rod metal of any suitable type, and instead of being bent to the exact shape shown it may be varied in many ways, within the scope of the invention. Therefore no limitation is implied by reason of the particular form shown, which illustrates merely one embodiment of a one piece stock made of flexible metal and so formed as to engage the barrel of the gun at a plurality of points between the muzzle and the breech. For heavier barrels, suitable clamping devices could be used, associated with or substituted for the loops or eyes.
hat I claim as new is:
A toy gun stock made of wire and comprising upper and lower members 1 and 7, a rear connecting member 8 between the same, the lower member 7 having a front extension 9 provided with a loopfor the gun barrel, and the upper member having a loop 4; between its ends, for the gun barrel, and a brace 6 depending from said loop and fastened at the lower end to said lower member.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN R. BALLENTINE.
