Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM Gr. CLEM ENrs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in printing frames, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a printing frame in which the negative and print may be placed in position and held firmly in position while closing the hinged cover.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device {which will print from negatives of different sizes.
A further object of my invention is to provide glass having an opaque border which does away with masks and trimming board with means carried by the printing frame for adjusting the position of the glass and holding it in its adjusted position.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rear part of the printing frame, one of the hinged members being thrown back. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a plan view of the rear of the device, the hinged members being thrown back, and Fig. 5 is a face view of the printing frame, a portion being shown in section.
In carrying out my invention I provide a main frame portion consisting of the side members 1, and the end members 2. These members are provided with an inwardly extending flange like that shown at 1*, in Fig. 1, and 2 in Figs. 2 and 3.
Secured to one of the end members 2 is a hinged portion 3 which is of rectangular shape, and constitutes the main holding member for the print. An auxiliary holding member 4 is hinged to the opposite end member 2, while a third member 5 is hinged to one of the side members 1 (see Fig. 1).
Arranged to extend through one of the side members 1 are set screws 6, these set screws being just above the flange 1". A similar set screw 7 extends through one of the end members 2 (see Fig. 2) just above the flange 2 On the underside of the hinged member 4:, when the latter is in its closed position as shown in Fig. 2, is a spring 4: which is secured within a recess 49. An arm P is secured to the spring 4 and extends through the member 4; to the outside and slightly above the surface of the member as shown in Fig. 2.
Leaf springs 5 are disposed in a recessed portion 5 of the member 5. The member 1 to which the member 5 is pivotally attached, is also provided with leaf springs 1 as shown in Fig. 1.
The under port-ion of the member 3 is provided with a resilient covering 3, while the members 4 and 5 are provided with resilient strips 4 and 5 respectively, on the sides opposite the hinges.
At 8 I have shown an arm which is carried by the side member 1, and which is ar ranged to be swung over the pivoted memher 4: to hold the latter in position. The pivoted member 4t bears a similar locking arm 9 for holding the member 3 in position. On the end members 2 are pivoted similar locking arms 10 to hold the pivoted member 5 in position.
Arranged to rest on the flanges 1 and 2- is a plate of glass 11 whose border is designed to be painted or otherwise treated with opaque material such as that shown at 11 in Fig. 1, thus leaving a rectangular space 11 the size of a postcard or any other size.
From the foreging description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof will be readily understood.
The glass 11 is placed in the frame and is adjusted by means of the set screws 6 and 7 to the desired position. The negative is then placed in position and the members 4L and 5 are closed upon the negative, the lock ing members 8 and 10 being swung over these members to hold them in position. The postcard or print is next placed in position, one edge of the print being slipped underneath the spring 4. The arm 1 may now be pressed downwardly thereby bringing the spring into engagement with the print and holding it in position while the main frame member 3 is brought over and pressed down upon the print. The locking member 9 is now closed over the member 8 and the device is ready for printing.
The provision of the holding means for the negative and print while the member is being closed I consider a most important aart of my invention, since in the ordinary device the negative and print is apt to slip before the frame can be closed, or rather during the closing of the hinged member corresponding to the member 3. In my device the spring holds the print firmly in position. It is obvious that glass plates such as that shown at ll, might be used with clear portions of other shapes or sizes than that shown in the drawings. The adjustment of the glass plate 11 is also an important feature of this invention since one can adjust the plate to any position so as to provide the proper margin.
It will be observed from Fig. 1 that the plate 11 is held between the screws 6 on one side and the spring 1? on the other, and be tween the screws 7 at one end and a spring carried by the member 2 and similar to the springs 1 The auxiliary members t and 5, it will be observed, hold the negative in place so that it is only necessary to open the member 3 to remove or replace the postcards or sensitive printing paper. IVhen another negative is to be used the auxiliary members 4 and 5 are released to permit the negative to be removed.
I claim 1. In a printing frame, a main frame portion consisting of sides and ends, said sides and ends being provided with integral flanges, a glass plate having an opaque portion and a transparent portion carried by said flanges, a main hinged member, an auxiliary hinged member contiguous to one end of said main hinged member, and a second auxiliary hinged member contiguous to one side of said main hinged member.

In a printing frame, a main frame portion consisting of sides and ends, said sides and ends being provided with integral flanges, a glass plate having an opaque portion and a transparent portion carried by said flanges, means carried by said main frame portion for adjusting the position of said glass plate and for retaining it in its adjusted position, a main hinged portion arranged to swing within the frame toward said glass plate, an auxiliary hinged portion arranged to swing within the frame toward said glass plate, a locking member carried by said main frame for said auxiliary hinged member, and a locking member carried by said auxiliary hinged member for said main hing d member.
In a printing frame, a main frame portion consisting of sides and ends, said sides and ends being provided with integral flanges, a glass plate having an opaque portion and a transparent portion carried by said flanges, means carried by said main frame portion for adjusting the position of said glass plate and for retaining it in its adjusted position, a main hinged portion arranged to swing within the frame toward. said glass plate, an auxiliary hinged portion arranged to swing within the frame toward said glass plate, a locking member carried by said main frame for said auxiliary hinged member, a locking member carried by said auxiliary hinged member for said main hinged member, a second auxiliary hinged member carried by one of the sides of the main frame portion and. arranged to swing toward said glass plate, and means carried by said main frame portion for locking said second named auxiliary portion in position.
