SKIRiT-MARKER.

To all whom it may concem:

Be it known that I, KATHERINE J. JAnGnR, of Norristown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Markers, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The invention relates to a skirt marker by means of which a mark may be made at a predetermined distance from the fioor upon the side of the skirt. Previous markers intended for this purpose have involved the use of awood or metal standard to elevate the marker. This takes up more room and involves more parts for its adj ustment than the simpler device which I have invented, which better serves the intended purpose.

According to my invention, I employ an ordinary fiexible tape with one end aflixed to the floor. Upon the tape slides a marker or chalk holder with capacity for adjustment thereon at a predetermined distance. lNhen so adjusted it is held by the hand so that the tape from its fastened end to the holder is upright, and taut; and in this position it makes the required mark at the predetermined distance from the fioor.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure I, is an elevation of a skirt stand with my marker adjusted at the side thereof, and illustrat-ing the method of its use. Fig. II, is an elevated sectional view 'showing` the means of adj Listing the marker upon the tape and setting it at the required position. Figs. III, and IV, are respectively front and back views of the marking device.

The measuring tape l, has its lower end securely attached to the floor, as may conveniently be done by the use of an ordinary thumb tack 2, care being taken that the attachment is so made that the scale of the tape begins with the free portion thereof.

The chalk holder 5, consists of a metal clip having sides 4-, 4, sufficiently compressed together to hold a tailorls chalk between them by the compression of the curved spring back 5. Such a chalk 6, is shown in place between the sides of the spring clip Specifieaton of Letters Patent.

with its edge projecting in position for use. The inside of one of the lower sides of the clip is provided with a groove 10, formed by recessing a partof the metal whereby space is provided for Jthe tape to run through the groove, as shown in Fig. IV, and in section in Fig. II. A. projecting finger ll, is formed by cutting out a portion of the recessed material.

In operation, the spring clip is slid along the tape until the lower edge of the lower side reaches the point on which is registered the desired height from the floor where it is desired that the chalk mark should be made. The free end of the tape is then back alongside the recessed portion, and under the finger 11, by which it is held in place. By turning the chalk at right angles to the tape, as shown in lig. I, a mark is then made at the required distance from the floor, and by turning the skirt around, the mark may be repcated or continued around the whole circumference of the skirt.

Iclaving thus described niy invention, I claim:

l. T he combination of a flexible measuring tape attaehable at one end to the floor; a spring clip capable of holding a tailors chalk; and a recessed aperture in one side of the spring clip rec-iving the fleXible tape with sliding capacity, substantially as described.

2. The combination of a flexible measuring tape attachable at one end to the floor; a spring clip capable of holding a tailors chalk; a recessed aperture in one side of the spring clip receiving the flexible tape and through which it is allowed to slide; and a spring finger under 'which the free end of the tape may be inserted to the position of the clip on the tape, substantially as described.
