BOX-FASTENING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 13,1914.
Application filed December 26, 1912. Serial No. 738,561.
To all fui/0m 'it may concern.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Fonsv'rri, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to means for fasten ing or securing boxes made of card board, paste board or other material, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device or devices of this class, particularly designed for use in connection with package boxes designed to be sent through the mails, but which may be used in connection with merchandise or other boxes of any kind or class.
The invention' is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which 5m Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section through a box provided with my improved fastening device ;-l `ig. 2 a view of one end of the box with part of the cover broken away ;Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l, and-Figs. Ll and 5 perspective views of the separate parts of one of my improved fastening devices detached.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in the drawing, l provide a box comprising a bottom or body portion a and a top or cover portion Z). The bottom or body portion o is provided with raised ends o2 and raised sides fr", and the top or cover portion Z1 is provided with depending ends 722 and corresponding` sides Z13, and the dimensions of these parts are preferably such that when the box is closed the bottom or body portion a is approximately inclosed in the top or cover portion 7), but the exact form or shape and dimensions of the separate parts of the box are not important and may be varied, as desired.
In constructing my improved fastening device or devices, two of which are shown in Fig. l, l provide two parts o and CZ, shown detached in Figs. l and 5, and said parts are stamped from sheet metal, and the part c is box shaped in form and comprises a back c2 and sides c3, and the sides are provided with projecting teeth or prongs c4.
The partfZ consists of a strip Z2 of spring metal provided at one end, the upper end as shown in the drawing, with a flat head (Z3, all the transverse dimensions of which are preferably greater than the transverse dimensions of the strip d2, and the other end of this device, or the lower end as shown, is bent to forni a forwardly directed nose piece Z4 and a backwardly and upwardly folded spring tongue d5.
ln the use of my improved fastening dei vice or devices, as shown in Figs. l to 3 inclusive, the end portions of the top part of the cover 7) are provided closely adjacent to the ends thereof, but inside of the end por tions of the bottom or body part of the box, vith transverse slots 6*, and in practice, the parts o are secured to the ends a2 of the bottom or body part a of the box by passing the teeth or prongs o* outwardly therethrough and clenching the saine, as shown at c5 in Fig. Q. The cover of the box is then placed in position and the parts l of the fasA tening devices are passed downwardly through the slots o* with the tongues Z5 projecting outwardly and bearing on the end portions a2 of the bottoni of the box, and in this operation the parts (Z Vwhich are longer than the parts c are passed entirely through said parts c, and the spring tongues (Z5 force the nose pieces d" inwardly so that they cngage the bottom of the back (s2 of the part o, and the cover of the box is securely locked in position and cannot be removed without destroying said cover. The heads Z3 of the parts Z of the fastening devices are large enough to entirely cover the slots or openings Z/l, in the form of construction shown, and while l. have shown but two of my improved fastening devices for securing the rbox shown in Fig. l, it will be understood that any desired number thereof may be employed according to the size and dimensions of the box used,
lvly invention is not limited to any particular material in the formation of the box, and my improved fastening device or devices may be employed in connection with boxes designed for shipping various articles through the mails or by express and for many other purposes.
IIa-ving fully described my invention what I eiztini as new und desire to secure by Letters Patent isi A fastening device for boxes comprising a boysbziped keeper adapted to be secured to the inner side of the vertical walls of the bottom of the box, and :t supplemental part composed of spring metal and adapted to be passed downwardly through the top of g the box and through said keeper, said supl pieniental part being provided at one end y with a fiat head adapted to rest on the top l of the box and at the other end with n back- Wurdly and upwardly directed spring tongue, :ind ny forwardly projecting nose piece to engage the bottom of the keeper.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of tbe subscribing' Witnesses this 21st day of December 1912.
WILLIAM H. FORSYTH.
