To all 'wkem may con Be it known that w AWAY and dimer-iii United Stair residir v county oi 1, will, vented a, new and. following is a specific;
The device forming the i this application a 0 provided with an intermediuie which me ion-m n (leek, so thatstock or other inerchaud he placed upon the deck, When the deck is position, the deck sulsscrnient ly being raised,
to permit, a loading of the 'iloor-pro 'ier of the ear.
The present; invent i as he provide novel means for actuating; the deei'i, to pro vide novel means for uniting ll 3 aciuaiing mechanism with the body portion of the car; and to provide novel means for conneciing the deck with the ae ating inechanisnui llilh the foregoin and other ohjwls in iiexiv, which will appear as line description proceeds, the invention resides in the comhinatioil and arrangement of parts and in 'the details of cmistructii'm hercinaller de scribed and claimed, it, being liinlt'i'sd-ooll that changes in she precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can lM' made \vilh-- in the. scope of What is claimed With-out (lepal'iing; from the spirit or the llHini Ull.
in the d a \ving;s,-l: igure 1 shows in vertical longitudinal seetioma car equipped withihe mechanism constituting the suhject-maiter of the prescniiinvention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the structure shown in Fig". 1; and Fig. 3 is a detailed eleraiion sho-wiiig ihe mechanism i'vhcreby rotation. is imparted to the main. shafts from the actuating shaft.
- in the drawings, Lhere is shown car, the transverse floor beams of which are denoted by the numeral 1. From the :loregoing it will he observed shaft 6 may be rotated from thcr or both sides of the car, whereupon, romtory movement will be imparted simullaneously io the main shafts :2. Each of he main shafts 52' is operativcly connected will; suitaijile mechanism "for raising and lowering the deck of the car. Since these raising and iowering mechanisms are tlupiica'iied, but one of them will he described. i'flu'sh or the main shafis 2 carries a plumi icon zally disposed beveled pinions 17 vhich are secured to the lower end of screws lhe heveled pinious ii preferably being located hciow the floor H of the car. The screws :25 are journalcd l'or rotation in beariugz s 19 which are secured to the floor 1-} of the car. and in angle lll'ifl'lflih' l9 which may he secured to the door jamhs "20, to certain of ill-1 uprhrhis ill oi the car. or to an other suiiahlc and accessible portions of the car. Iiiouulml to move vertically within the car is a deck certain of the cross beams of which are dcnoicil hv the numeral 22-. the cross beams 22 carrying nuts 93 into which the screws 25 aka-threaded in pracriral operation. prosupposiug: that the drclr 24 is ioeatcd adiacenl: the floor "alitv :1 hcvelcd piuions 1G. meshingintoproper H- ot the car. it will he understood i0 impart' rotatory movement to the main shafts 2. the pinions 16' thereof, meshing into the pinions 17 of the screws 25, Will cause a r0tation of the screws, the screws rotating without longitudinal advancement in the hearings 1H and in the hearing brackets 19. The screws 25. when rotated. Will cause an (levation of the deck 24-. it being recalled that; the screws :25 are threaded into the nuts 23 which are carried by certain of the transverse hcams 22 of the deck 24. Thus, after the (Eu-k has been loaded. the same may be elevated into or almve. the position shown "When the main shafts 2 are rotated,
in Fig. 1 of the drawings, whereupon the floor. proper ltot the car may receive its lead.
It is possible to raise the deck 24: until it 5 is close to the roof of the car. Thus the full load may be placed on the floor 14, the deck;
'24- being relieved of the weight. When a cargo of-dripping merchandise is .to be carried, the deck 24; may be permitted to rest- 19 (-n the door 1e, to the end that a perfect drainage'niaybe obtained.
The device herein disclosed is of simple construetiom and embraces no parts likely to get out oforden A stock car constructed in accordance with the present invention, may be loaded readily, it being unnecessary to drive the stock up a sharply inclined chute, in order that the stock may pass upon an elevated deck.
'20 The car adapted to be employed for the including a floor structure; a deck vertically movable within the car; end screws support- ,ed for rotation by'the floor structure and threaded into the extremities of the deck;
intermediate screws 'supportedfor rotation by the floor structure and'threaded into the central portion of the deck; beveled pinions carried by thelower ends of the screws; longitudinal shafts journaled on the floor structure; beveled pinions carried by the 40 shafts and meshing into the beveled pinions of the screws; and means for connecting the shafts for simultaneous rotation; the intermediate screws constituting means for preventing a bending of the deck and a binding of the deck on the end screws during a lifting of the deck; said means being located between the intermediate screws to apply the rotatory movement of the shafts initially to the intermediate screws, thereby to lessen the tendency of the shafts to yield under torsion.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto afliXed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
