The fumes from' the metallurgical furnace pass within the bell through the pipes 22 and 23, and fill the space 24 within the/bell, the liquid serving as a seal to prevent the escape thereof around the lower ed e of the flange`i19.
en the motor is started, it will be seen that the tube 10 is rapidly rotated and the blades 15 lift the li uid by centrifugal force upwardly, and disc arge it from-the. tube throu h the radial passages 11. As it passes there rom it enters the contracted passage between the bell 7 and convex face 17. This causes a suction of the gases or fumes withinthe space 24 through the passage 21, and also throu h a passage above the plate 13. The liqui striking against the curved blades 18 is broken up, and thoroughly mixes with the fumes. The zigzagged'passage 20 also causes a more thorough mixing of the fumes and liquid, and by the time the lower end of the passage is reached the liquid has absorbed all of the desired products in the fumes. The liquid passes back into h ess fumes pass around the lower end of the bell and out of the tank, as indicated by the arrows in Fi 1. y
- n the modification shown in Fig. 3, the tank 1 is provided at the center with an opening 25, havin@ an upwardly extending sleeve 26, surrounding the same. The motor or pulley shaft 27 extendsthrough the sleeve, and is supported from below the tank. The centrifugal tube 28 hasa'central passage 29 therethrough, into which extends the sleeve 26. The space 30 surroundin the` passaf'e 29 is provided with blades 31, w ich,
like the blades 15 in Fig. 1, are of propeller form.l The space 30 at its upper end is prosemi-circular vided with radially arranged passages 32 formed exactly alike, and actin in the samd manner as the passages llfin t efpreferred form of my invention. The bell 33 has a zigzag or irregular upper face 34, and its inward y extending lower end 35 is within thetank. downwardly extending flange 38, which extends a considerable distance belowthe lower end ofthe bell and below the level `0f the liquid within the tank 1. The plate 36 on the inside of the flange 38 is provided with a series of openings 39, which allow the liquid which has not l becomel `thoroughly broken up and mixed with the fumes, to pass back into the tank through the space within the bell filled with fumes, .and thus absorb a certain amount of fumes. through the side of the tank is a pipe 40, which also passes through the flange 38 and conveys the fumes from the furnace to the space at the center of thebell.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the tube 41 and the passages 42 are arranged the same as the tube 10 andpassage 11 1n Fig. 1. The shaft 43 extends to the bottom of the tube and carries the propeller blades 44, which are the same as those'shown in the other two forms. The bell 4 5A has the zigzag walls 46, which extend sa /slight distance within the tank. The cylindncal member 47 has the zigzag.-wa1l.48 corresponding -with that-of the bell and forming the passage 49. The cylindrical member 47, as shown, has its upper end .considerabl below the passages 42, and is `also at a ifl'erent angle from the bell, to form an enlarged exit lto the zigzag passage 49.
