LOCKING DEVICE FOR DOORS AND WINDOWS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 27, 1913.
Patented Dec. 23, 1913. Serial No. 757,234.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. Fmmnmoii, a citizen of the United States, residing in the town of Hood River, county of .llood River, and State of Oregon, have invented 5 certain new and useful improvements .in Locking Devices for Doors and 'Windows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to locking devices for doors and windows, and more particularly to a simple, little device of the character referred to which can be carried in the pocket, pocket book, or on a key ring with keys, and, if desired, can be used as a name plate for identification purposes, but itis especially designed and adapted for use in looking a door or window against being opened.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the character referred to of such small dimensions that it can be very conveniently carried at all times, as is a small key, and of such construction that it is complete in itself and capable of being applied to any door or window without the attachment or detachment of any other part or device, and without the use of any tools whatsoever.
Broadly considered, the invention comprises a device of thin plate like construction adapted to be inserted between the two parts or members to be locked together, as between the door frame and a door, or between two window sashes at their meeting edges, with a part adapted to be turned crosswise thereof, whereby to engage the face or edge of the door or sash and prevent its being moved away from the other part until the movable part of the device has 1 been turned into the same plane of the de vice.
In order that others may understand my invention, and its application, I have shown in the accompanying sheet of drawings, one practical form or embodiment thereof, and one use for which it is especially adapted.
In the drawings, igurc 1 is a face view of a practical form of the invention; Fig. 2 is an end view thereof, with a part turned crosswise thereof; and Fig. 3 is a fragmcntary cross sectional view through a door frame and a door, showing the invention in operating position.
The invention here shown and which I will now describe, comprises a plurality of plate members, 1 and 2, hinged together, as
l at 3, to turn upon an axis extem'ling longil tndinally of the device, one of said members i being provided with one or more prongs, as i t, and the other member being provided with a hole, as 5, by means of which said de-- vice can be placed on a key ring, or hung upon a nail or hook, as may be desired. The member 2 is adapted. to be turned in either direction at right angles to or crosswise of the member 11., as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and as shown in full lines in Fig. 3. The inner end of said member 1 is straight and stands in alinement with the inner end of the hinge bead, as at (5, whereby said hinge bead is adapted to serve as a gage in applying the device to the door or window.
In Fig. 3, 7 designates a part of a door frame, and 8 the edge of a door, the invention being placed between the meeting surfaces thereof in the manner iiulicated, to prevent the door from being opened.
The operation of the device may be briefly described as follows: Before the door is closed, the device is placed against the door frame with the hinge bead 3 resting against the face thereof, or against that part of the door frame which rests flush with the face of the door when the latter is closed. The members 1 and 2 of the device, it will be understood, stand in the same plane when it is applied to the door. the prongs 4;-l.- are forced into the door frame in the manner iiulicatcd. When the door is thus fully closed, its face is flush with the part of the frame against which the hinge bead was placed, and the part 2 of the device is then turned crosswise of the member 1, in the manner shown in full lines, Fig. 3, so that its inner, or square end rests against the face of the door and prevents the door from being opened until the part 2 is turned back to a position in the same plane with the part 1. If desired, the device can be placed lower down on the door, as at the lock, with the prongs thereof inserted into the boltrecciving socket in the face of the door frame, and, which is indicated in dotted lines in l ig. 3. This prevents the penetration of the door frame by the prongs d l, as will be readily undcrstood.
While I have shown and described one practical embodiment of the invention for purposes of illustration, I am aware that. modifications can be made therein without l l l l As the door is closed,
departing from the spirit thereof, and I do not, therefore, limit the invention to the particular form here shown, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is, v
1. A locking device of the character referred to, comprising a two-part plate mem her, one part of which is provided with one or more prong-like members, and the other part or which is adapted to be turned crosswise of the other part on an axis extending longitudinally thereof, for the purpose referred to.
2. A locking device of the character referred to, comprising two plate members hinged together in the same plane, upon an axis extending longitudinally thereof, one of said members being provided with one or more prong members projecting at an angle therefrom, and the other of said members being adapted to be turned crosswise thereof upon an axis extending longitudinally oi: the device, for the purpose illustrated.
3. In a door locking device of the character referred to, a plurality of plate members hingedly secured together in the same plane, one of said members being provided with one or more laterally projecting prongs, and
another of said members being adapted to be I,
vided with laterally projecting prongs on the side of said bead, and the other of said members having a straight end in alinement with the inner end of said hinge bead, and adapted to be turned crosswise of said first member, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Portland, Oregon, this list day of March, 1913.
HENRY J. FREDERICK.
